Hey Guys,

I had a terrific weekend playing in Reno last weekend.
The new fields at Golden Eagle are the bomb.
They're faster, safer and better than all but major league fields
for my money.

Dave and SSUSA ran a great tournament.
The balls were plentiful and good even though one of the teams
we played against introduced a 50 core ball as a home run returnee
when they were up.
Accident?
I didn't think so..

But here's a problem worth addressing.
We played, Mac 2, down from 50's into the 40 and over.
Which was great for US.
We got to win 3 games against the kids
which as you might realize does wonders for our egos
and confidence.
But what's in it for them.
When we won one game the sense of dejection
I got from the guys we beat was more than we just lost.
It's that, "We lost to the OLD guys" and therefore lost
much more than the game.
A lot of them had their women and kids with them and it's tough
to justify how important/good you are when you lose to guys
20 years older.
Think about it.

In one close game
there was almost an incident as the young guys
got inordinately, from our perspective, agitated and upset
at some calls.
The umpire by the way, Dave Dowell,
who umped our games on Field 3 was super,
got all the tough calls right and handled the disgruntled young guys
instinctively well and kept an ugly incident that was about to happen
from ever taking place.
Thank him for me and how about letting us know
who he is for a round of applause.

So, what I'm saying is
although it has some merit for teams playing down
it can be too unfair to the younger teams who have
nothing to gain beating the old guys and everything to lose
when they lose, thereby creating extra tension
attitude and behavior problems we don't need.

It was great seeing Bash and Pete,
Ron May and Walt,
all the MTC guys.
It was great fielding again with
the greatest senior softball franchise
and terrific bunch of guys, the Old A's
as I had the oppty to play in both 60's and 50's, major plus.
The Old Dawgs, Stixx, No Dice
all looked and played well.

I regret having seen the Mavericks and Big George Santoro,
Mickey, the Bull and Mango.
They were in another bracket and time.
I'll see them at SPA.

Next to last, I get to use my oldest and most timeworn
(just like me) cliché as my broken arm has healed completely
and hamstring has healed enough to play
and want to play, again,
"Rumors of my demise, have been greatly exaggerrated."

Thanks again to everyone involved.

Forgot to add how great it was meeting
Joe Lecak except for the fact that he looks so young
and made me feel like I'm 80 years old
and Arizona George.
Great guys and players playing for Arizona.

Joe great to finally meet you, thanks for the ego boost on the young comment. I played with the CA Braves on Saturday nite against MAC II missed you in that one. As I stated earlier Mike Clary does an amazing job with his teams and what a pleasure to see Charlie playing SS. I'm no expert but for my money he will be the best at that position in the 50's. I believe a fellow named Duff pitched very tough and great competitor. JK Inc. what an awesome collection of talent. I spoke to Dave Dowell and he commented that they were the finest team he had ever had enter one of his tournaments. I think it is great for the 40's and that division will only get stronger as the word gets out. Spot on comments by the way on the young vs old, I agree with you SSUSA and the rest need to address the 50 Major plus division. I will add this to your comment Joe I believe that in the long run having the best 50 players occasionally play with the younger guys strengthens the ties to them going to the 50 division. I remember playing the Mavericks when I was in my late 40's and couldn't wait to make the turn. It also knocks some of the ego out of you and makes you a better 50 teamamte because you already know the 50's can bring it. When they get back home they will tell their friends the "old dudes" can really play I hope I'm playing like that when I turn 50. It is a double edged sword. Hope to see you in the LVSSA we aren't going to SPA to expensive.

Hey Joe,
Sorry I couldn't make it Saturday night.
It would have been a gas having fun playing against you.

You're right about Charlie Penes.
He's a monster and is probably the best pure SS in Senior ball
and Joe Cuneo who is also up from Mike's Old 40 and over bunch
is just a gem of a player who plays 3rd as good as anyone
(anyone? Yes, anyone)
and is a true Major plus slugger.
With how much emphasis I place on defense
to help win big games
I am both pleased and honored to be playing
with such a monster club and great bunch of guys.

It was indded good to meet Joe Lecak and hear his account of "bashing with the babies" while talking with Dave D. Unfortunately, neither one of us knew who was which on the board at the time.

Great to see BOTH Joe's.

That's what it's all about guys.

Great tourney through and through. It was even fun taking BP at the construction site and actually seeing just how far we could launch in a WIDE open area. Felt like a kid again looking for the largest vacant lot to play ball in. Almost needed a chase car to track down some of those balls.

Pretty cool...........

Yeah I was wondering about those shots by the 40's that were burning up upon re-entry.

Initially there was Dave, you and me. I'm about 6'4" probably wearing the Rudy Racing Red tinged glasses or possibly on my hat. Then, when an other team mate of mine walked up I had to be the better looking of the two. ( ;

Paradise #7 (until we get #13 issued).

In the team pic from Tucson in Jack's action shots I'm in the back row 4th from the left between Tree & Ted. That's where they put the beef.

The game you refer to was Mac II and Bully's. I thouhgt Bully's behavior was embarressing. It came from the entire team, but their four hitters display was extremely poor.

You maybe right as it's a "no win" for them playing a 50 team, but their on field antics neeed to be addressed by SSUSA.
