Discussion: Hitting from tee vs. hitting pitched ball

Sometimes you can adjust on a Tee and yank the ball a Long ways and be impressed by it.....The only problem is you can be solidifying bad habits/muscle memory that does not translate well into actual hitting/timing/technique - especially if you are searching or altering your technique using a Tee.....

Don't overlook the simple thing we all used to do as kids - simply throw the ball up (like we used to do with rocks) - stride and hit it......It keeps the hand eye stride timing working together......I've watched some very good hitters do this and you can actually build a rythm easier than if you are placing the ball on the Tee yourself then going back and taking a stance and starting all over.....to me the advantages of live BP are a quick reset and repetitive swing + the changing location in your "hitting zone" which lets you know where to drive the ball by where it's located within your zone......Another advantage of live BP is if you hit with equal or better players - BP buddies they can help you build a better game/swing.......usually it's not a wholesale change but the incremental small details that build a good swing....

Tee work is a good part of the puzzle of hitting - but it cannot take the place of live BP......

I do miss hitting with all you guys in the states.....

OPS

Oddly enough - have more control with the FL...with the benefit of quicker decision time based on pitch location and additional zip on the ball once contacted.....more off the "wrist snap" hits too....

Discussion: Endload or balanced?

I think Alan has it right - 75-80% endloads....can only speak for mywelf and it's all endload for me.....when I went from Balanced to Endload it took awhile to get the timing right with the overlap grip - but now I don't even pick up the balanced I have.....

Discussion: Passing of Fred Purvis

I'm far away from the fray now location wise.... But I knew and liked Fred....as fierce and as focused competitor as you will ever find on the field.....and very cordial off the field....he is/was one of the good guys & even this far away I felt the loss and shock as soon as I saw the headline.....

Prayers and condolences sent and wished for the family - including - of course - the softball "family".....

As for the ability to get picked up - there is a desk there assigned to help with that.....just tried to get you a name and number but my US cell phone battery was dead....someone else may be able to get that for you or you could call Huntsman....

Played there 6 years.....if you love playing ball (good bats).....if you enjoy breath taking scenery all around you......if you love great (quick)fields and clean air.....if you enjoy plenty of good places to eat with discount coupons.....if you enjoy being around areas for stunning day trips.....if you enjoy good shows/entertainement at the nearby ampitheater (don't miss it if you can help it).....if you enjoy participating in/watching other sports events beyond softball....if you enjoy built in pre-planned social activities put on by Huntsman..... + a hall with mutiple vendors for sports related items + health services and screenings.....then you will enjoy your experience at the Huntsman.....

Really no down side - umping is sometimes spotty.....practice fields for BP tough to find except for the one kamikazi field......

Some banks do not have a presence in Utah - if you require inside the bank services might want to plan ahead.....

Make it vacation with softball included.....go once & you'll go back.....

Discussion: West Coast Aftershock -

Guys - it's a team....they play every tourney together....room together....grab food/beer together....to suggest that the team members had no knowledge of this - how far the balls traveled - where they came from in their own dugout is ridiculous.....I'm not a betting man but I'd say it's pretty darn near certain everyone knew what was going on and they were in the know.....

Hitting at BLD in Manteca they are using a better ball and the balls always fly there so there is no reason to chill/doctor a ball....

As far as the awkward/disclaimer/brag/spin/damage control - yes - since most of the teams & umps participate in both venues it could be interesting.....but as they are playing in an NCSSA event it will probably be of no consequence once the tourney gets rolling.....

The onus is now on the SSUSA to sort and take action as deemed appropriate as it happened on their watch.....

What action do you suggest they take?

It's too easy for teams to disband and regroup so whatever happens it has to apply to the team and members themselves.....

It's August - maybe disqualify this team and it's individual members for the remainder of the year....not allowing them to participate up through the TOC.....? Certainly can't reward them.....

Discussion: Hey - Teams In and Around North Carolina

There is a new player moving to the Durham area (I believe - has a house there) that will be looking to play some ball. He's mid 40's (not sure if over 45) hits the ball hard, long, smart, and well with oppo power (righty)....plays most positions - plays smart and agressive with good speed for a big man (6'2" - 230?).....good all around player/athlete - he is relocating from Thailand so will be new to the tourney scene but has played league in the US before.

We use the Senior bats (Combat, Miken, Worth, Reebok) and good balls (Baden Fire) here (college age up) so he is used to the speed of the game in that regard. He's coached and ref'd mutiple sports here so is sport oriented.

Name: James (I won't give his last name/public) - he can be reached right now through email at:

jamescoaches@hotmail.com

If anyone is looking - or - just make him feel welcome like y'all normally do - he's one of us....he will be flying out of here during the next week.

I can recommend him as a player and person......

A shout out to my NC buddies.......

Discussion: Just A Casual Observation

Wanted to chime in and say how nice it is to have the message board free of threats - name calling - inane arguments for arguments sake - bickering - badgering and imflammitory posts.

Now when there is a subject to be broached and discussed it can still be lively with some swords crossed from time to time, which is to be expected.

There were a lot of people that simply turned away that now seemed to have come back.

The quality that each of us experience on the fields from one another has returned to the message board.

Kudos

Discussion: Suspensions

We've gotten off topic here....I would still like to know what took place.....

Comtinuation of thread jacked topic....I know in many sports I played once you reached 40, (I also played against the kids until 57), you were considered in a "Masters" competition catagory....not too far of a jump then to add to the senior division - I think they start the pipeline at 40 to gain 10 more years of the market and provide players a way to continue at an age where they might be thinking of hanging it up - providing more income and players ($$$) for the organizations while also an organized venue for the "Masters" 40+.....good marketing (in many ways - services - products - markets) and a win - win.....

Discussion: Sliding on Turf - Big League Dreams Fields

At golden Eagle I slid into 3rd base....pretty much finished me for a long time....picked 21 little pieces of rubber out of me - (that we found) & picked up a nasty infection that lasted for months....that stuff is just plain nasty & does not drain naturally so any blood, spit, flesh remnants left cooking in it are waiting just for you with a burn (if lucky) & infection (if not so lucky) to put you down.....I will never, ever slide on that stuff again....
