I spoke with some NorCal players today at a tournament in Manteca
and they didn't know what I was talking about with respect to the new
softer balls that are being introduced in National Tournaments.
The guys from LVSSA said to me they ordered the best ball available
and the soft cover ball was sent.
I thought Senior ball was supposed to be separate from whatever modifications
some ball manufacturers want to make to satisfy lower and other divisions.
Hmmmm.

Why can't we get/see specs and comparisons and other info on these new balls
that seem to be taking over and where will that head the bats we will have to
or want to buy to hit them well.
I and some other SENIORS
have some reservations about the new ball and we'd like some answers
if anybody's got them.

Dave Dowell has assured me that no one has complained about the balls
that SSUSA uses and bravo.
The ball that we used in Reno this year
was a terrific ball but I don't remember it being soft to the touch.
Dave and Terry,
Is SSUSA planning to use the new softer ball
any time soon?

Specifically, the balls feel, bounce and seem different to me.
Some infielders like me have had trouble fielding them
and they ARE hard to grip effectively when throwing hard.

Can we get some info on this from any ball guys
and if not then why not?

Joe,

You might be refring to the 'Micro cell" ball. Softer feel than normal but still flies. Even performs well in the heat.
Have a few in my bag of B.P. balls, they are 44 core with 400 compression. I'll be in Manteca today look me up.

Note that in 2009 USSSA is going to the 40 core 325 compression ball in ALL divisions. Exception being the Major World Tournament where they use the ZN. This is in response to the shave/rolled bat situtaion that's troughout the young man's game. The City of Tracy went to this ball and ASA bats a few years back and their league enrollment dropped 80%.

We'll see if this trend gets to Senoir Softball. If it does just vote wiith you're wallet.

SMOKEY: I heard that Trump, was "designing" a 47 cor balls with a 450 comp for USSSA? Not sure if, this ball is for Seniors or what?

Brian,
I remember going to a tournament in Tracy a couple of years ago
when they switched to that ball.
I haven't been back since because it kills the game we love to play.

Follow the money
is another great little aphorism I wish I was smart enough
to create.
Yet, it still makes a lot of sense to me.

When and if you want to find out who's responsible for just about whatever's going on
in this society about anything
what do you do?
Follow the money.

In a market-driven society like our
just follow the money.

That's right, Brian, we don't and won't play
as and if they mess with our ball/bat combinations
but I'm not sure they hear us yet,
or want to.

Hey Bruce and the Dog,

How you guys hittin' em?
I was surprised given a neanderthal view of the world
(Frankenstein)
that a "softer" ball would travel so well.
Urrrrngh! Ball GOOD!

But why the softer ball.
And I've said here a bunch of times
I prefer defense to offense and how the ball reacts
or changes the approach of infielders would be and is VERY significant to me.
All our lives,
did I say ALL,
yes, ALL,
we have played with hard balls.
Even the softballs were hard balls
and from little league there's decades of muscle memory
involved with the sense of how to react and what to do
when a ball is coming toward us.
I watched an excellent shortstop from GeKel
have great difficulty handling balls that he normally would have gotten
and I'm concerned.

Shoot me because I don't trust the market place and the hidden agendas
of some TDs to be looking out for me/our best interests in Senior Ball,
but I'm not sure this softer ball is the right or better ball for us.

Not sure.
Reservations.
Jury still out.
Urrrrrnghhhhh.

Jacker,

Have not heard of this ball for USSSA. I play and Ump USSSA so their change to 40/325 as of 2009 for all Men's divsions comes from good sources.

Since USSSA isn't big on Senior ball I can't see them having a "special ball" 47/450 for Seniors.

I would be in favor of a standard ball for Seniors,. Trump Micro Cell 44/400. Good ball, durable, and plays well in heat. Don't think we need a 47/450.

Joe,

Of course utimately it's about the money. If these associations make changes that are not in the best interest of the masses it will show in the cash register. Simple.

hi joe,we've been using that style ball(MCT) here in tx for the last 2 yrs and i haven't seen a bad hop problem with them,by the way the ball is made by trump.like i said some of the younger guys did say they were funny to throw till i told them not to grip it to hard, just let it roll off your finger tips.the kids were a little skeptical at first, but once they got used them, they have been all over me trying to get some of these balls(real bad heat and humidity problem).now in the cold they are no diff than a regular ball i have found,JMO,so i carry some guru's (non MCT type)for the cooler days.i personally think a good 44-400 or 44-375(problem is not all mfg'ers will make them the same) is all we need for senior's with our bats(even tho said bats are supposed to be 1.20 bpf).
well say hi to everyone in norcal, sure do miss playing there.

no problem here with the mc. I remember the old 50cor Worth Red Dots. The ball was like a rock and the cover was slick.
