Phoenix 50 Major
We had a great time
in Phoenix this weekend
played mostly at Papago
with perfect weather and well maintained fields.
The umps were good to very good.
The balls were too quickly weak in the warm
weather.
Fran and Dave were as gracious and involved
as ever and I even got to say hi to Mike Macenko,
a special treat for me.

26 teams.
Wow.
We had the misfortune of dropping our first
double elimination game which put us at the bottom
of a huge dog pile and though we, Arizona MOB,
made it all the way back to 4th place
we ran out of gas against a fresher team
from Oregon.
Still had a great time.
So many old friends and opponents
highlighted by seeing and talking with Joe Reed
at airport security on Sunday.

I will start another thread to deal with some very important issues around the dead ball/hitting pitcher rule
but as Dave Dowell said
we now have an arena where we all can see
what works and doesn't regarding this fundamentally important issue for Senior Ball.

Thanks to everyone.
Ray, Jack and Reedus from Gekle,
you guys had the best and classiest team
in the competition.
Bash you animal as always
and the Bear who I hadn't seen in too long
congratulations on doing so well.

Special thanks to George Robinson and Steve Imlay
without whom
playing this year would have been unthinkable.
You guys are the best friends anyone could have.

And lastly for now,
Marvin you animal from MTC 55
who had the heart attack at practice on Thursday
take good care of yourself and come back soon.

Hey Joe,
Congrats on a good comeback. How many runs or home runs did you guys average in your games? The major teams did not get to furnish there own balls did you? If not, i can only imagine about the ball with that heat.
Later
Donnie
When can we get you to come over to our side for a tourney next year?

Hey Donnie,
They didn't allow "the new ball in" rule in 50 major
and yes.
We played 1 up after 3 home runs.
We probably averaged 6 to 8 homeruns a game.
What was noticeable, Donnie, was when we played at the hottest time of the day
11 to 3, the balls were much less.
We happened to play mostly early in the morning and much later in the day
as it turned out when the temperature was more conducive to the long ball.
The balls weren't bad.
They just weren't as good as I remember the ball we used in Reno.
They just didn't seem to perform as well when hit a couple of times
in the 85 to 95 degree temperature range.
Thanks, Donnie.
I would play with you guys, anytime
and a chance to suit up with Butchie and Clatter, Mike and Andy?
Now you're talkin'.

Sorry I missed you over at Mountain Vista. I had no problem with the balls especially since I was using the Senior Gear.

Sorry I missed you. Mountain Vista is the only complex I did not make it to. I saw many balls hit a long way this past week end, one Bull hit was well over the 450 mark. I saw a whole lot of long balls hit at every complex.

Pretty sure I did not hit one 450 or could, but I did clear the leftfield sidewalk on field 1, maybe 410'. Then again I am a old fart.

Close to mile high in Reno...
makes a lot of sense.
Same balls?

Hey Mike, had a good tournament?
Sounds like it.

Most of the big shots I saw hit all weekend were from Ultra 2's.
One of our guys was destroying the ball all weekend, Ricky Bass,
and the big guys from Gekel
the best hitting team in 50 major
were all using Ultras.
I swung a 30 oz Combat.
My SuperFreak is not ready for prime time, yet.

Yep, 774, 9 HRS, 30 RBI's and for the first time ever in organized sports I got tossed.

For future reference never utter the phase, middle open after your pitcher gets hit. Umpire said by saying that once and nothing more, I threatened the other team. No warning no nothing just gone.

I walked out of the dugout and sat down and watched my team get beat, don't know if we would have won, but I let my team down. I will never utter that phase again.

My life is a testament to it being never too late to make mistakes
or to learn and in fact, both are often directly related.
I've never seen/heard anyone getting tossed for saying the middle is open,
Mike, and next time, just don't say anything.
Retaliation IS part of the game we play.
Just don't talk about it.

Those are impressive numbers for the tournament, Mike.
Nice job.
And way to take responsibility for your behavior
even though it sounds like you didn't deserve the consequences.
That's the stuff of real men.

Einstein, The team you guys lost to is the NW Legends, from WASHINGTON not Oregon. We had some great games throughout the season. Sorry to hear that the MOB will not be back in 2009.

That was a really dumb thing to think, or say. I assume you have learned to be more mature. Last I checked the middle is part of the field.

I have heard 20-somethings say that, but fortunately so far never an allegedly mature middle age man. Why would it be the other pitcher's fault that yours missed a ball? And if you have an issues with the ball being hit to your pitcher, for whatever reason, why not be a man and take it up with the specific batter and NOT with an innocent bystander (e.g. the other pitcher)?

SB4B, several of us have also said "middle's open", just in jest. I guess in the future we'll have remember your experience.
I know it's tough to have to sit out and watch your team get beat.

Bruce, not to pick on you but did the other pitcher find it funny?

As a matter of fact, YES. It actually was their pitcher that hit a line drive past the ear of our pitcher.
Everyone on both them knew it was in jest. It was a league game and everyone are friends.

Dirty, This time and this time alone, I will respond.

I made a mental and physical mistake, I apologized to the pitcher, to their team and my team. Nothing was done in anger or intent. For the record, I will never willingly participate in an action that could result in an injury to another human being because of a softball game.

As a Christian, Army Veteran, former Military Police Officer, and Father, I hold myself to a standard that does not lend itself to these type of acts. I believe behavior that incites and inflames is usually done out of fear and cowardliness and the act of a bully.

In this tournament, 29 times out of 31 I did not hit a ball between the SS and 2nd base. There is not a ball I hit that I do not hit as hard as I possibly can, except for the one I punched to the 3-4 hole because the 2nd baseman shifted behind 2nd.

I really feel sorry for you and will honestly pray that your individual pettiness and spiteful behavior can be focused in a more positive manner. Every word, I have written or spoken regarding this incident has been directed toward upholding the rules, interpretation of the rule and realizing the rule will be evolving.

Admitting error on my part whether an act of ignorance or physical limitation was not done with reservation. I made a mistake, that will not be repeated.

The only reason I'm responding here is because I feel strongly to what Mike said. I know him...have played against him and he's always been a gentleman. I can tell you that playing with and against men like him just sweetens the sport.

I was playing in a rec league game, Monday. Our pitcher got hit by a kid who had no idea what he was doing at the plate. He couldn't go middle intentionally anytime. After that hit, one of the guys in my dugout looked at me and said, "I guess it's time to go middle..." I said, "Why? he didn't do it on purpose and besides that if you're gonna retaliate...don't broadcast it. I won't go headhunting...period." BTW-This is a Church League...

While mistakes happen, I agree with Mike....you shouldn't try to hurt people regardless of the situation.....as difficult as that may be.

Good day to all...

The Sat. evening game between Gekle and NW Legends was a great game. Great hitting on both sides and the fielding was excellent. The championship game was a good one also, I thought the Legends were going to come back and pull it out but Coor's Light held on and prevailed.
Congrats to Coor's Light on the win.

Sorry Jawood, for not knowing the name of your club.
In my head you were still Goodmans from Vegas
who beat us for he LVSSA title this year
and these days I'm more reluctant to all kinds of changes
in my life.

Mike don't worry.
