June 3 Gary Heifner 248 posts | Those who have seen my posts know I am in strong favor of the 1-1 count and 11 defenders if the 11th plays on the dirt and within 5-10 feet of 2nd base prior to contact. I had the opportunity to play under this format last weekend in Milwaukee. With the 1-1 count, we played a full 7 innings in all 5 games within the time limits. With the 11th defender, we turned 4 double plays and just missed on 8-10+ more. Being a regional tourney, we know most the our opponents and who are the middle hitters. After a couple of games a strange thing happended. The middle shooters realized that if they wanted a hit, they would have to pull or go to the opposite field. It is rather intimidating to look up and see the pitcher with an infielder on each side of him and the LC and RC fielder in the same line of sight. I don't think our 2nd, 1st, RC or RF have ever had more opportunities to field a ball in each game. The middle shooters also discovered that there is a hitters life when pulling or going to the opposite field. This can be proven by the high scoring. Check the 65+ scores. The SSWC staff should take a more serious look at this format, especially in the 65+. |

That first strike is huge... I don't get why SSUSA and other associations don't make this adjustment as they are interested in tournaments running on time. |
June 4 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | I can take or leave the 1-1 count. I think it needs to the be last resort to speed up the game. The umpire needs to be more agressive in getting batter to the plate and also making sure teams hustle on and off the field. If there weren't limits on hrs that would really speed up the games. I can see it now, 5 pitches, 5 hrs! :) There is also no need for the batter to touch one base. Make each team supply their own balls. If they don't have a ball available, umpire calls strikes until a ball is thrown in. |
June 4 LP 317 posts | sounds like to me that senior softball is getting like politics, you got something that was working but now there needs to be changes made just to show that some changes are made. not for the good of the game but just to make a showing that the organizations are making changes, without regards to the effect on the game we love to play. the 1&1 count is ok but if we are going to pay top dollar for tournaments dont water it down to make games move faster. senior ball doent need to look like T-Ball. |
June 4 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | I like 1-1 count. No need to touch bases as everyone should just walk off. Supplying own balls is a good idea and will keep the TD's from worrying about xtra expenses. Something was working well, LP. 26 teams in Phoenix last year with HR's as singles and someone thought it was a good idea to go with PPR, crappy balls and HR's as outs. It's about having fun. Hitting good balls hard, fast and far is fun. If safety is really a concern instead of a means to another end put up screens and let's play ball. |
June 4 Just -a-base Hitter Men's 60 12 posts | I agree with Bruce I can take or leave the 1-1 count.I do think that 4-3 does add to the drama. |
June 4 Foothills Men's 55 95 posts | 1 and one would be good for speeding up the game only . For a hitter it would take away consistency . You already have one strike . Then you have someone like Renaldi throw a high knuckleball that hits the back corner of the plate and you are dead meat . |
