Dec. 6 OB-SYR 1 posts | If everyone is so worried about how fast the ball comes at the infielders, why not move the bases back another 5 ft to 70'. I play 3rd in the 55's & it's ok with me where it is right now. |
Dec. 7 santo Men's 55 41 posts | OB, I had the opportunity to play 3rd in the 50's at Ft. Myers. Knowing the Ultra 2 was involved, I had to step up my game...and move back! I don't think the bases should be moved back. Then again, I am not a Pitcher... |
Dec. 7 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | I played first base in Ft. Meyers and handled most shots there. With a runner on first and less than two outs I usually play up, even with the bag. I did miss two line drives, both having a lot of top spin. I was able to knock both balls down for the force at second. I don't see a need to move the bases back. If you can't react to a hard hit ball, play deeper. |
Dec. 9 bashbro1 Men's 70 267 posts | I play some 3rd base and 2nd base for my Senior Softball (60ís) teams (First American Title and W.E. Ruth of Seattle, WA) and the only real concern I have with a ball hurting someone is what condition is the field in! A lumpy uneven hardness is more likely to cause an injury with any technology used, than the batted ball speed in my opine. I came across a Batted Ball Speed Study World Wide Web that displayed a chart made up of various bat material constructions. This study used a standard ASA .44 COR 375 Compression ball. For the common bat making materials the study found that wood bats produced: 80-88 mph BBS; Single Wall:90-94; Double Wall: 96-98; Titanium: 100-102; Ultra II: 102-106; the Miken Ultra MaxEndLoad topping out @ ~108. Well Titanium bats and the Miken Ultra MaxEndLoad are banned by all softball associations. The Ultra II on average, has only about 4-6 MPH more batted bat maximum Batted Ball speed than the 98 BBS set by ASA. I donít believe thatís significant enough to banned all some (32) bats in my determination. Let the Seniors 60+ use the Ultra II into perpetuity; paint it a different color and give a different name to rid the stigma of Ultra II as dangerous. The U2 is the seniors bat of choice if you play in any of the SSUSA/SSWC/Terry Hennessey tournaments; his participation NUMBERS to prove it! ìAllow the Ultra II, and they will COME!î Bashbro1 |
