Nine Teams Secure TOC Bids During Opening Session of the 2018 Northeast Championships

SYRACUSE, NY – The 2018 Northeast Championships began here on July 6 with the Men’s 40 through 60 age divisions playing at Hopkins Road Park and Santaro Park Fields.

In the three-team Men’s 40 Masters Major Division, top seed Giant Steel/TRVE Point Survey (NY) finished off a perfect weekend, highlighted by a 16-13 win over Bob Johnson Chevrolet/J.D. Oxfords (NY) in the championship game. MVP (PA) finished in third place.
Playing in a best two-out-of-three game series in the Men’s 40 Masters AAA Division, Ponce Puerto Rico/First Capital (NY) defeated Live! Casino (MD) two games to one. Live! Casino took game one, 15-12; while Ponce Puerto Rico evened the series with a 12-7 triumph in game two. Ponce Puerto Rico earned the championship win with a 13-7 victory in the rubber match.
The four-team Men’s 50/55 Platinum Division saw Trinity Rizzo’s (NY) bounce back from its 15-14 loss in the championship game against Domino’s/Bob Johnson (NY), with a 19-16 win in the “if” game. After dropping their opening game in the bracket, Domino’s/Bob Johnson rattled off three straight wins, including their win in the championship game to force the “if” game, en route to their runner up finish. Brian Patten/Mark Thomas Law (PA) finished in third place.
Big Bottom Brewery/Evolve Salon (PA) posted a perfect 6-0 record, going 2-0 in seeding play, before posting a 4-0 mark in bracket play to win the nine-team Men’s 50 AAA Division. The championship game featured the top two seeds, as No.1 Big Bottom Brewery downed No.2 Finance of America (NJ), 15-11. Window Source (MA) made a strong push through the elimination side of the bracket, winning four straight games, before falling in the third-place game.
Buell Fuel (NY) completed the gauntlet run through the elimination side of the bracket in the four-team Men’s 55 Major Division, as the team dropped its first game against TNT Sports Club (NY), 16-13, before going on to win four straight elimination games, including back-to-back wins over TNT Sports Club in the championship (16-8) and “if” (22-6) game. Sweet Construction finished in third place.
In the Men’s 55 AAA Division, Lynch Construction (PA) swept Ram Power (Ontario, Canada) in a best two-out-of-three game series by scores of 19-16 and 13-5, respectively.
Cardot/Madalena Construction (NY) bounced back from an 0-3 showing in seeding play, winning three straight bracket games in the four-team Men’s 60 Major Division, including an 11-8 win over Deep Purple (MA) in the championship game. Agway Steelers (Ontario, Canada) finished in third place.
In the six-team Men’s 60 AAA Division, Buell Fuel 60’s (NY) double-dipped Cape Cod Mariners (MA), winning both the championship game (19-5) and “if” game (17-14). Cape Cod Mariners defeated Buell Fuel, 7-6, earlier in the bracket to reach the championship game. Roadhouse Blues (PA) won three straight elimination games en route to a third-place finish.
With their backs against the wall, Diamond Dawgs (MA) won four straight games, including back-to-back wins over top seed The Starboard/OTS (DE) to take home the four-team Men’s 60 AA Division. Diamond Dawgs defeated The Starboard/OTS by scores of 14-11 (championship game) and 18-9 (“if” game) to complete their run through the elimination side of the bracket, after dropping the opening game against Durham Silver Stix 60’s (Ontario, Canada), 8-6. Durham Silver Stix eventually finished in third place.
The Men’s 65-75 Division play Monday, July 9 through Wednesday, July 11. A recap of the second session will appear in the next addition of the SSUSA Newsletter.
