Discussion: 70 foot bases

In addition to a couple of tournaments that I've played, our local league uses 70' bases. I do think that it improves the game for all the fore mentioned reasons, but being 65, they should have an oxygen station on third. It'll turn a lot of inside the park HMS. into triples for us old guys.

Discussion: O.K., WHO ARE THE MOST SOLID AA TEAMS AND ARE YOU HEADED TO DALTON THIS THURSDAY? (especially 60 AA)

Vito, I don't mean to be disrespectful. I'm not an expert by any means. However, I've been playing senior ball for 8 years from AA to M+. When I watched you play the AA teams in Dalton I was watching an average AAA team. It's just my opinion, but the scores bear it out. It's just unfortunate that the AA teams had to play a team that should have been in the AAA bracket. Look at the scores in the 60 AAA bracket. No team dominated like you did. Again, just my opinion.

Discussion: O.K., WHO ARE THE MOST SOLID AA TEAMS AND ARE YOU HEADED TO DALTON THIS THURSDAY? (especially 60 AA)

After seeing Doc Martens playing Strykers, it was obvious that they weren't a AA team. On the second day I asked Ridge why he was letting them play AAA. He told me how they were just barely getting by and that there were stronger AA teams in the tournament. I don't remember the exact wording, but he said that they were a weak team that wasn't doing well in the tournament so far. What a crock.

Discussion: REALLY, WHY ARE THERE LESS TEAMS?

The major reason that teams with only three or four in their bracket play three days sometimes is that the amount of money paid to the sanctioning organization is predicated on how many motel rooms are rented by players and how much money is brought into the community by the tournament. Many of these tournaments have several empty fields and umpired not working, but will have teams wait 3 or more hours to play. In some tournaments like the SPA Nationals, we are talking about big bucks.

One of the reasons for seniors not playing night games is the inability of the older players to see the ball at night, no matter how good the lighting. When you're 50, it's not a big issue, When you're 65 or 70, it's another story.

Discussion: Reebok bats

I had one of the original Reeboks. It was as hot as any bat I've hit. I read a lot of negative comments on this board so when it cracked with near 100 hits I thought it was just like the Mikens. I was told that the first batch did indeed have issues and that I should sent it back to Reebok. That was about three weeks ago. Yesterday I received a replacement. I don't know how well the new one will stand up, but I appreciate Reebok replacing the original.

Discussion: Another thought on home run limits

A133, you've brought up some good points. I really can't think of an equitable solution for the residency issue, but the 100 mile residency requirement isn't feasible. There are many areas that couldn't find ten softball players within a 100 mile radius. This is particularly true in the west and northwestern states. Ask Mad Dog.

Just my opinion, but I do think that AA teams need protection. Theirs is the only bracket where HRs after the limit should be outs. Again, just my opinion. Thanks, Hombre

Discussion: Home Runs for Outs

Another scenario to consider is the team that is made up of catchers. There are AAA teams that have 8 or 9 guys who can hit it out and score a lot of runs. However, by playing 6 catchers in the IF and OF they can't stop the other team from scoring. They don't win many tournaments but their offensive numbers are impressive. Where do you rate them?

Discussion: Home Runs for Outs

That the umps influence the decisions to have extra home runs as outs does make sense. I think that AA definitely needs protection and that it's a good rule for that division. It's been my experience, particularly in the South East, that most AAA teams have some major players and some have a Major plus player, or two. This is due to the lack of teams, in particular upper division teams. Most of these teams really don't need protection other than the one up rule. Just my opinion, I think that 3 HR's and a walk is a much better rule for AAA.

Discussion: How To Improve One's Arm?

Fellas, I really appreciate the information. I'm going to try several of the suggestions.
The surgery removed 1" of the collar bone and ground down the top of the joint due to arthritis. An impingement was removed. The labrum was reattached and a significant amount of damaged tissue was removed. I don't recall them saying anything about the rotator cuff.

Again, thanks

Discussion: How To Improve One's Arm?

I usually play outfield. In 2005 I had major surgery on my throwing shoulder. The surgeon said that I probably wouldn't be able to throw again. He was almost right. LOL At 65 I would like to improve my throwing ability.

Is there anyone who can offer some suggestions? It's like starting over, grip, exercises, etc.?

Please don't hijack this thread with the usual mind numbing juvenile back and forth about balls, bats and testosterone.

Thanks, Hombre

Discussion: Character

I'm glad to read that the SSUSA Staff and EG Fred are finally thinking about taking some action to make reading this board enjoyable and informative again. And Capt Kirk.s assessment is pretty much right on. Almost every thread is ruined by these three immature, inconsiderate name calling guys.

I have meet and played against Joe and Bob. On the field they are good guys. On this board, they ruin almost every thread with their bickering, and name calling and one upsmanship. As far as Gary C, I've never meet him. On this board he's always been an iconoclast of civility, adding very little of interest to anyone.

I hope that the staff will man up and do what they deem necessary to make this board enjoyable again for the softball players.

I'm not anonymous. Webbie25, the vast majority of readers feel like you and I. They just don't want to pig wrestle.

I made my views know several weeks ago in very strong terms on olie04's thread and feel fairly certain that I was responsible for having the thread pulled. Sorry, Kim

Discussion: Who Needs an Excellent 60+ player for the Heartland Tournament?

If you need an excellent player for the Heartland tournament, please contact me. The player is local to Chattanooga and is a SS with a great arm and good speed. He hits 750 with a HR now and then. His 60+ AAA isn't playing in the tournament.

I'm posting this message for him, because he's not on the board.

B I enjoy playing with the high performing bats and balls. I would continue to play with the USSSA standards. There are tournaments for everyone. There are the tournaments which allow the "hot" balls and bats and those like the ASA which use lesser bats and balls. I think the % of seniors who play in these different types of tournaments reflect their preference of equipment.

The characterless hypocrites who continue to bash others for their choice of bats and then admit to using the same bats should have asterisks next to their posts. Your not very honest fellas.

Discussion: Old South Result

The no water in the dugout issue is one that the TD might want to change if they plan on growing this tournament. When our coach asked is there was going to be any water in the dugout, he was told that they sold water and Gatorade at the concession stand. In this heat, the players need to keep hydrated. It's a safety issue. It's not practical for the players to run to the centrally located water cooler by the concession stand while they are playing.

Other than the lack of water issue, it was a fun and competitive tournament.

Discussion: Player Poll

I think that you could find the results of the SPA poll somewhere. The only answer I found was that %7.5 or 121 out of 1579 didn't like 1.20 bats. I don't know if they were referring to all 1.20 bats or just senior bats.

GaMan, I couldn't agree more. "KEEP IT SIMPLE AND PLAY BALL THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH DAYS LEFT !!!!!!!!!!

Discussion: A Fist Full of Dollars For a Few Dollars More

Hitman, I think that the format if just fine. It's fair and you get to play enough without the risk of total exhaustion. The #1 seed has to be beaten twice. The rest is single elimination.

In my opinion this is a pretty good format if you have the right number of teams in each bracket. If you had too few the teams would only get a couple of games. If you had a large number of teams you're back to playing too many games. I know that most of us have played tournaments where we played 10 or more games, but as we get older more than about eight games ceases to be fun and becomes dangerous in the summer heat. Again, this is just my opinion.

I don't remember hearing many complaints about the three pool games, double elimination format. The only reason I can think of that SPA got away from it is $$$.

See you guys this weekend. I hope we can field a team. We have some injuries and two of our players have had parents pass away this week. It' hasn't been a good week
