July 30, 2015 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 65 team playing 60 tourneys We are a 65 team.. We lost a teammate when we went to 65 because he was a bit younger than the rest of us. We try to mix in playing as a 60 team to let him play with us but when we go the the major tourneys we play as a 65 team and leave him at home until he grows up. Our question... for a qualifier to play in the 65 Vegas tourney can we play as a 60 team and include him on the tourney roster but use this roster (minus him) to qualify the players (all the rest 65) for our 65 entry in the Vegas tournament. Reading it back it confused me but you get the question. We hate to exclude him in any tourney but since most of us are WELL into our 65 eligibility we made the jump this year ..so.. if he plays with us and we are entered as a 60 team, must we use that tourney as a qualifier for 60's or can we drop him and use it as roster qualifier for 65's. His fate in in your hands Thanks |

Jan. 30, 2013 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Sal Silva Passed Away 1/28/2013 Phillip: Thank you for posting regarding Sal.. I was fortunate enough to have played with him a few years back with D&K. Great guy... always smiling always positive. A gentleman on and off the field. My thoughts and prayers to his family. He will be missed. Mike Swearingen |
Aug. 30, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Prayer: Joe DelaTorre Is In A Tough Fight For those of you lucky to have known Joe, he was a delight to be around. He always greeted me with a hug and a smile and took the time to stop and talk no matter how much of a hurry he might have been in. I was lucky enough to have played with Joe on three different teams and against him many times as well. Always a gentleman, always a competitor and always a teamate in the bigger game of life. For Connie and the rest of Joes family and close friends my prayers go out to you that you find peace in the wonderful memories of a truely wonderful man. Mike Swearingen aka docswear |
Aug. 16, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Prayer: Joe DelaTorre Is In A Tough Fight Dave and Fran, Sorry it has been a while since I last read on this site and just noticed this post concerning Dave's father. My thoughts and prayers certainly go out to you and your entire family. How fortunate you are to have had him in your lives for so long and how comforting it must be for you to be at peace with this transition. May you find peace in the wonderful memories I am sure you all shared. Mike Swearingen |

June 23, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Is winning the most important thing? Webbie25 For me winning is certainly a goal but only one of many and not the most important one when it comes to playing softball. I get more enjoyment out of playing the game and the camaraderie than I do winning. Winning is certainly preferable and I do all I can to do so but not at the expense of enjoying myself. I have been playing softball for 40 years now and certainly went thru the winning is everything phase but , like wood and others have found greater enjoyment in just realizing I am lucky to just be able to still be out there. I certainly understand and respect those that feel differently but you are taking a poll and that is my input. Enjoy your GSF teammates. Great bunch of guys! Doc swear |
June 23, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Yellow Combat for sale Wood. Is this your Ron Galvin signature model or the one you had shaved and loaded with gun powder? $199 sounds pretty steep to me. Would you take a new two-iron signed fielders glove and one of Millers fur-lined jock straps in trade? |
May 24, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: retinal detachment recovery time Ok... sorry Armiho... for some reason I thought you were Hombre.. senior moment.... but... same offer.. please e-mail me if you have any questions.. Double 10 .. other than having your macula detatch (middle area of vision) sounds like you had the worst kind of detatchment. You were very lucky to only end up with a little distortion. Thanks to Wood for bring my error to my attention.. |
May 24, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: retinal detachment recovery time Jim... sorry to hear the PVD went south on you. It does happen. Your recovery time and depth of recovery will depend on how much and where the retina detatched as well as what procedure was used to repair it. A simple laser procedure in the far periphery really clears without any problems fairly quickly while a more complicated scleral buckle requires more time and can lead to more difficult problems afterwards. If you want more information, please feel free to e-mail me at docswear@gmail.com and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Most importantly, do what your surgeon has asked you to do and don't do anything strenuous until he clears you to do so. good luck.. docswear |
April 26, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: What have Been Your Experiences With PVD? Armiho211... great post!.. There are three nationally known docs that perform this procedure.. Dr. Geller in Florida, Dr. Karickhoff in Virginia and Dr. James Johnson here in California. I have met with Dr. Johnson and have referred patients to him for evaluation. The procedure is done using a laser (YAG type) which can vaporize the floaters. The procedure has helped a lot of people that were really bothered. In general, most eye doctors view floaters as nothing more than an annoyance and feel the procedure is both unnecessary and poses undue risk to the eye which is why the procedure is not performed by more surgeons. The treatment plan for floaters is generally either 1.. live with them.. 2. do a vitrectomy (procedure to replace the natural vitreal fluid in the eye) 3. natural remedies (drops) or 4. the laser procedure. The only procedure that does not produce some sort of question in the minds of most eye docs is to do nothing and live with them. For the patient that is bothered so much that they feel they cannot perform their normal daily activities with the floaters present they will reach out and try anything. My suggestion would be to ask the doc that you are seeing now what his thoughts are (you said you had confidence in him) and pick his brain on the subject. If you honestly feel you cannot live with them, schedule a consult with one of the above docs and go from there. I know Dr. Johnson and have spoken with him. I know he is conservative and will not do the procedure unless he feels it is safe and necessary. Hopefully you will not have significant floaters that bother you and you won't have to worry about it. If you want more info let me know your e-mail and I will help. docswear |
April 24, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: What have Been Your Experiences With PVD? Sorry Gary... my answer was directed to Hombre. He evidentally understood and hopefully the information I provided was helpful to him.. He also managed to understand the good natured banter and did not find the "twist" either bizzare or incomprehensible. I often find posts on this blog presented as unusual or not related to the original subject but refrain from commenting as such as a matter of good taste and respect. I respect the opinions of everyone that posts including those that do not agree with my own thoughts. In addition, as a response to HJ, my response to Hombre's question was quite straight forward and both he and I seem to feel we communicated quite well.... in English no less. If I offended either of you or anyone else with what both Hombre and I shared as a humorous touch to us, I sincerely apologize. Thank you to my good friends E4/E6 and the wood for seeing both the humor and possible value of my response to Hombre. docswear |
April 23, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: What have Been Your Experiences With PVD? Jim.. ah.. yeah.. you did ask that... sorry... when you are seen at this next appointment, the specialist will let you know if the vitreous has managed to completely detach from the retina which will release the tension on the retina which will minimize the risk and he will tell you to feel free to play ball. He might add that using the "special" senior bats is an insult to your manhood and ask where your pride is.. If you are like me you will completely ignore the question and continue to use the bats...just don't hit the ball up the middle unless there is a screen in which case you will think you are on a minature golf course... sorry a little humor there. My PVD in both eyes occured in my late 40's. I continue to see the spots but have yet to be troubled with any significant retinal issues. I claim that I was a stellar defensive player before they occured but unfortunately those that played with me a long time ago when I was young know better. Just pay attention to any changes in the number of floaters ... watch for flashes of light or loss of vision.. and WAIT until your doctor clears you to play to minimize the risk... Mike |
April 23, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: What have Been Your Experiences With PVD? Hombre... by itself, a PVD is not serious at all. Over time the vitreous shrinks which is just a natural part of the aging process (sorry). The downsides are the irritation you will experience when you see those little spots, lines, strings, tadpoles, spider webs or whatever shapes yours have taken moving around in front of you. Generally you will only see them against a bright background and believe it or not, you will grow accustomed to them and probably get to a point that you won't even notice them. The floating stuff is tissue that has broken away from the retina when the bag of fluid (vitreous) pulled away from the retinal layer. Sometimes the vitreous will "clump" together creating other types of floaters. The biggest downside will be that this will put you at a slightly greater risk to develop either a retinal detachment or a macular hole. These are both much more serious than your PVD. If you get an increase in your floating spots, flashing lights in your vision, a decrease in your vision or a feeling that a curtain is being pulled down over part of your vision, you need to see a Retinal Specialist ASAP... The sooner you get it fixed the easier that fix is (generally). Bottom line is that depending on the amount and intensity of your floaters, you shouldn't have anything more than a minor annoyance from their existence and will most likely not even notice them much in the future. good luck... docswear |
April 11, 2012 docswear | Topic: Product review Discussion: new combat centenarian......short Bob... as much as I hate to agree with you about anything, I really can relate to your post. You and I have played with or against each other for more years than guys getting close to going "40" have been alive. We play in a league with the worst ball I have ever hit with single wall bats with a bunch of Hall of Fame Players and have an absolute ball. We play in tourneys with the hottest of hot bats and lively balls and have an equal amount of fun... I show up with my glove and borrow bats in league and show up with three or four bats when I am playing in a tourney where senior bats are allowed. Neither is more enjoyable than the other. As you said.. It is simple.. We can still PLAY. We are getting old and still get to go out there and field and hit and I am grateful for every moment. We get to visit with great people and players with the same level of enjoyment and I find that no matter what level they play or why they are out there that we all have that common bond of just enjoying being able to be there. If somebody wants to rain on that parade, I get out my umbrella and just move on to someone that doesn't. As you know, I am not a "purest" when it comes to softball. If adapting the game to make it either more enjoyable or safe or faster or just making it available for more people to play, I am all for it. If we went back to wooden bats and crummy balls I would still PLAY... If you don't like the game or how it is played and can't get change because the majority don't want that change, start your own association with your own rules. Those that are in accord with you will surely follow. NFTTY DocSwear |
April 4, 2012 docswear | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: An apology to Gary19 Swing... I don't know you but have to warn you that you have made a terrible mistake. When you offer Woody a beer... that means a pitcher... that usually leads to a pizza or two followed by dinner at Mortons Steak House for his entire extended family... be extra careful if he asks you if he can "come by your place"... the moving vans will follow. Your thoughts on Gary19 and this entire post are interesting. I don't post much (not because of 19) but read often. I don't know if he hates Senior Softball Bats and Balls.. I don't know if he has an IQ or 60 or 160 but I know he manages to get a rise out of more people than anyone else on the board on a consistent basis. His posts do seem to be consistently negative and I am more of a positive kind of person, however, OCCASIONALLY he does present an idea or concept that makes one think a little. I'm not sure but I do believe he ENJOYS the banter and reactions he creates. He seems to have a need to tell us he is smarter than the rest of us and that also causes some knee-jerk kick-back. He typically finds someone that he can banter back and forth with for a bit until that person comes to his senses and finally says "enough" much the way Webbie seems to have finally settled. If you don't like him or what he says, ignore him. Don't stop participating or adding to what this board has to offer. Most of us enjoy and appreciate the information posted. You can read what he says but it is only print.. You don't have to acknowledge his existence if you don't want to and can have dialog with whoever you wish without having to even answer one single Gary19 post. Maybe he will get the idea and back off with what most of us see as negativity and arrogance. I am with Tom up there somewhere when he asks can"t we all just get along. Oh... and good luck with your new extended family (the Woodroofs).. docswear |
March 13, 2012 docswear | Topic: Bats Discussion: Reebok Melee Kennard.... no need to hold back... tell us how you really feel.. I have consistently carried three bats in my bag over the past two years... Yellow combat, gray combat and miken ultra... I have replaced two mikens and presently have a broken Miken ... the two combats (other than having the handle chewed on by one of my dogs) are in fine shape. I have not and will not purchase a Reebok based on things like the above posts.... I will most likely NOT replace the Miken for a third time. Watching hitters like some of those that have posted above, I really don't see any great difference in the POP of the Combats vs the Mikens and the Rebok...If you hit it good with any of those bats its gonna go...I guess I am getting cheap (or cheapER) in my old age and would rather have the durability and spend the money saved on something useful like a dozen Krispy's before the game.. By the way.. I have seen Wood hug Kennard.... not a pretty sight... Docswear AKA Mike Swearingen |
