I've always had a hard time exercising just for the exercise. I prefer a chainsaw and splitting mall workout. Keeps my upper body in shape. Hiking up and down hills burning brush helps my lower half, especially keeps my ankles in good shape. Occupies most of my non-softball weekends.

I put a list together with Rob, Rob, Bruce, Brett, Greg, Jeremy, Todd and Anthony, including either phone or email or both. Jeremy has the info and will make contact. There likely will be one or two other 40's teams in 5on5on5 starting March 7th.

Rob,

I have heard from 3-4 40+ guys looking to play in our area. Should be easy to assemble a new 40+ group for 5on5on5 Spring League. Could be 3-4 40's teams.

We will start Wednesday March 7th, 8 weeks, need minimum 6 guys. Best way to find a Summer League (full) team and Tournament Team will be to get in on Spring League. Double-headers 16 games total for around $370.

Rob ? 43
Rob Blackburn 40, Tacoma.
Bruce Brenna 40-something?
Brett Krueger 40-something
Greg Haley ?

Peak or Ridge, Hofman played Hook, I was playing with ya! I heard months ago that some in Oregon might be working on bringing a "new" player into the Northwest. Always wondered why no SSUSA in Oregon. Played in Medford a few years back with red-shirt umpires, figured they've locked up most of the state. NW Championships in Portland was always a good tournament but local umpires were a problem, and that location finally expired.

I hope it all works out for the benefit of players and teams, and the non-profit nature of softball organizations prevails. I believe competition has benefits, yet in a non-profit setting it's not as crucial.

If anyone is interested in financial information, click above on Links - Financial Disclosure. I did and made my request because I'm curious.

I agree, very common sense stuff. I've been through at least 5 Ultra II's in 6 years of senior ball but never knowingly broken one myself. #6 is key for me!

I'll direct and be the water boy. And I'll mop up the blood at home plate and drag away the bodies, with a cart of course. No way I could play this game.

Topic: Rules of the game
Discussion: Ever Been Personally Polled

I'm guessing SSUSA polls their tournament directors regularly, trying to stay with the trends in comments on and application of current rules. Polling all players would be a huge effort and could be valuable yet the results would span the spectrum. Some would prefer to play 70's ASA rules and some would want 40 pages of special rules including every wild idea you're ever heard, and then some! The majority would be somewhere near the middle, not that I'm an expert on the majority, it's just a scientific fact, for those familiar with "normal distribution". It's the only thing we know for sure about a large population of individuals, their individual opinions will be all over the map.

The bottom line for me is this:

For every odd rule that one individual might prefer (including me), that pulls one way or the other on the spectrum (above), there are many senior players against that particular rule change. I don't like bat restrictions, USSSA pitching, 70' bases, blow-out innings or games, middle-wars, 1-1 counts and many other things that are out there. I like just about everything about SSUSA. I try to keep the price down for tournaments I run, but if I had to run a national operation and offer first class tournaments I would have to charge $500-$600 for the 3-day tournaments, and I would still struggle to keep good people and lucrative relationships with Cities and businesses.

Discussion: Question about your "LEAGUE" rules

Probably the #1 difference is who offers the league? That will determine who writes the rules.

City/County Parks & Recreation Departments will offer what sells to a degree, they are responsible to their management but in many cases they may not have the incentives to really make the whole operation work. Many surely optimize the use of their facilities and run great leagues with the best local officials. Many more are just trudging along collecting government pay checks and employing the local monopoly of officials. Too many probably have been doing it too long and don't really care anymore, and there's no real competition to keep them motivated. Writing and adjusting rules for different leagues can take considerable time and effort.

Private (for profit) operations seem to be rare at least in our area. They have to listen to their customers and pay their bills and make a profit. They have complete control over what is offered, what organization to align with, if any, and where to get officials. They control the rules as well but it has to sell.

Personally I believe the best option is for players and officials to run their own non-profit leages. First of all they have to be able to secure facilities. If you can't get decent facilities you struggle. You can choose your national organization if you have the officials or can get good local officials to register. Much work involved but you have control. It can be done. It is also the least cost option as long as you have the willing volunteers to run it.

In Lacey we run an SSUSA league, we use their rules and we modify what we want based on what we think is best for the special circumstances that exist with leagues. We play 5on5on5 early in the year then full teams Summer and Fall.

There is a local league playing modified coed, 7-men 3-women, NSA rules, and they've been around for many years. Their league rules are more than 10 pages, including eligibility rules, many special rules for safety and many more that are already in the NSA rule book, and so should not be there at all.

It seems any governing body (think congress) has a tendancy to continue to add more rules (laws) rather than endeavor to refine the existing rules.

Anthony,

We're working on attracting more 40's to our senior league in Lacey. You can find more details at the LEAGUES tab above. We play at the RAC Wednesday evenings. We get lots of inquiries from individuals looking for a team. The key is networking with others that are interested. Talk to others 40+ and I'll connect you with players I know.

The Spring session will run March-April with up to 12 teams for 5on5on5. You only need 6-7 guys to make a team, cost will be about $375.

Summer session will run 13 weeks May-July, full teams.

Discussion: For the guys who still play with the kids.......

I played tons of raquetball in college, just to stay in shape, got pretty good at it. Tried to get back in to it a couple years ago, almost killed me! My off season workouts are mostly with a chainsaw. Having a sit-down job I have to get outside on the weekends, regardless of the weather. Burning is really my passion. There's just something about a nice hot fire out in the woods on a cold December day. One of these days I'm going to do some experimenting with an earth-oven. My ancient ancestors must have been some serious meat eaters. When I read (Clan of the Cave-Bear) about cooking ptarmigans or a whole cave-bear in an earth-oven I was droolin'!

We've had one or two 40's the last couple years.

2011 info:

Spring March-April 9 weeks double-headers 5on5on5 (6-7 guys make a team) 18 games for about $400 with 12 teams.

Summer May-July 13 weeks double-headers full team 26 games for about $840 with 12 teams.

Fall August-September 9 weeks double-headers full team 18 games for about $525 with 9 teams.

Almost no rainouts, you probably already know how good the fields are regardless of weather.

Looks like the thread got split somehow. The active one shows on General & Miscellaneous at or near the top but does not show at all on the full message board. The original, with the second post re: tournaments in Lacey, shows on the full message board but not General & Miscellaneous, or any other topic for that matter.

Being a programmer I've been responsible for many bugs like this in my own systems! I spend 20% of my time coding and 80% testing and tracking down bugs. What fun!

Todd, do you know other guys 40+ from Tacoma south that would be interested in playing senior league in Lacey? We really need more 40's to fill out a division. Few of the older teams really want to play the 40's, too much difference from 40 to 50. A challenge we've seen lately has been someone willing to step up and organize a new team. Last year we had enough free-agents contacting us to make 3 additional teams but little interest in organizing. Also sponsorship is always a challenge.

At 49 in 2012 you could play league on a 50+ team according to our league rule. We plan to phase this out in 2013. Some local tournaments also allow 1-2 underage.

The senior game is really a blast. So many guys playing the men's game into their 40's really have no idea how much fun it could be, to be the new, young, fast, strong guy in senior ball. We still have some attitudes but it is a much calmer game with guys that just love to compete. The rules make it much more forgiving but the bats & balls make it fast. It is very much still a hitters game and a great defensive workout. The per inning run limit (5) and HR limits keep scores reasonable at a 15-20 run average.

BB50, send your info to sver152@comcast.net

I noticed something strange on the message board. When I went to general & miscellaneous, I saw my recent thread twice. One thread there were two posts attached, the other none. When I went back to all messages, the first does not show up (with the two added posts), only the other with none. Looks like a glitch in the program.
