Discussion: What 55AAA teams are going to Western Nationals

Looks like a good group of 55AAA teams for Western. One
55AA team will likely be included in our division:

55AAA
CJ & S Express
Desert Dawgs
Desperados
Drillers
Electrifiers
Jones Chemical/The Y Bar & Grill
MI Sports
Scrap Iron

55AA
Scrap Iron Northern

Major
MWC
Nor Cal Reds

Major-Plus
Fan Grabber/AZ Lone Sharks

Very disappointed that JCI/The Y from WA is not
heading to Reno. Not enough interest to play Carson City and maybe the weather freaked some
guys out last year. I will be there to spy on you guys though, umpiring session 1-2, playing
50AA session 3 in Carson City.

Discussion: Weather in Reno

For those of us who played and/or umpired in the snow and sleet and rain and wind and unbelievable temperatures last year, this is very welcome news. This will be my 7th year in a row and the weather has always been great, warmer than average. Did play with strong winds a couple times but we know that's normal for the mountains & high desert. Weather has been unusually nice up here in WA, off and on in April-May. Got lucky last Saturday with nice weather for a one-day tournament. Rained Sunday!

Discussion: AGE & RATING MIXING AT TOURNAMENTS????

Good feedback for those of us who run tournaments and want to know. We really do want to offer the very best to the teams in our regions and little tweaks here and there can really make a difference in customer satisfaction.

Just a thought: I consider all of the teams from my state, top to bottom, to be my teams. They all need the opportunity to play local to prepare for Championship events and represent us. With only a few Major and even fewer Major+ teams in a three state area, they will always be combined with others in a local event. And it is true they are tough to beat, even with equalizers. Add in the continuing development of the 40's program, it's even more of a challenge.

We now have 4 40's teams in our local league, and lucky us, a 55AAA team, we get stuck in the same division, and we're 0-6 so far. Our guys don't like it but we are being tested each week, and it may end up helping us when we get to the big events. We don't have to play anyone but 55AAA when it really matters.

It's a big picture perspective, our state or our region against the nation, rather than "I, me, my".

And what is "over-priced"? When a tournament director makes more than $5/hour for his time? If he's really good at it should he make $10/hour? And how many guaranteed games do you want?

Discussion: Yauger Reunion

This coming weekend will be the 6th in a row
with nice weather, unheard of for our area in
April & May. We'll see if we can hold out for
7 in a row, May 19-20! Looks like La Nina is
finally done.

We have not been to Yauger for senior league or
tournaments since 2008. Should be fun! The
fields are much the same as back then but they
have rebuilt the west parking area (retention
pond) with landscaping and a high fence to
protect cars from field #4. We'll likely only
use fields 2-3 which are the best.

Discussion: Doctor says I have a hernia

Runs in my family, dad has had 2, brother 2 and me 1, groin area just below the waist-line, right or left. When I was 10 and my dad had the surgery it was a hospital stay, mine was outpatient. They don't even use general anesthesia anymore, they dope you up then use local in the area of the surgery.

Recovery Roughly:
First 4-5 days, pain meds every 4 hours (2 percocet)
1 week still sore and tender, becoming tolerable without meds
2 weeks pretty normal but still some tenderness
3 weeks ready to play

Discussion: So few 55AA

It seems 55 teams are rare. Most 55-59 players play with 50's teams. I've
seen it in our area, only 1 55AAA and 1 55M. It's all a matter of our ability
to assemble the players. The larger metro areas have the population to do it
but it still seems rare.

Good response already for the April Opener at the RAC, Lacey WA. At least 13 teams already and 3 more possible. We had 18 last year and looks like we'll exceed that for 2012. Send me an email...

Discussion: I never dreamed it would be this hard to start playing again.

I thought I was going to miss a year in 1989 when I entered treatment on the advice of a judge. Managed to play a little that year. Thought maybe I would have to quit playing softball after I quit drinking because it seemed like everyone played softball as an excuse to drink. Still somewhat true today however not so much with seniors. I find many in senior softball do not drink anymore or very little. Many also try to eat right and stay away from the typical concession stands at the parks. At least three of our guys had surgery in the offseason to correct problems that could and often have ended softball careers. When I see the guys in their 70's and 80's playing, I think that's what I want to do. I hope I can retire between 66 and 70 and spend all my time traveling and playing softball.

An untouched ball could be ruled dead ball, ground rule something, but I would guess a ball that "bounces off the heel of his glove" remains live no matter where it ends up. I could be wrong.

That's correct. I checked with Jeremy today. He says "Toxic-Combat" 40 is dangerously close to having enough committment for Senior 5on5on5 league starting March 7th at The RAC in Lacey.
