Discussion: Baytown Texas "B" division looking for players

The Senior league in Baytown Texas is looking for players. They play on Monday and Thursday nights. This is a very very very non-competitive league (yes, they are bad players and you don't have to be that good). This league is for people who want to play and get some exercise and don't take the game too serious. Men have to be at least 50 and women have to be at least 40. They do have an "A" division too and these guys are more competitive. If you are interested text me at 713 859-3840 or you can email me at dancerclown@msn.com

Discussion: Soccer shoes

I wear soccer shoes, but I pick them up for 6.00 at Academy and when my other cleats wore out, I started wearing them. I usually play one night of double headers and a once a month 3 game round robin tournament. I have had no problems wearing them and I like them. But (E6 in Az) brings up a point, since I never played more than 3 games in one day or play an entire weekend of softball wearing soccer shoes, he could be right about longer cleat and rigid sole wearing your feet down on a long weekend of softball.

For about 15 years I have been wearing Nike Shark football cleats, I really love the ankle support.

Discussion: Lets here it for the old guys ! ! !

I played in a tournament last Sunday. Tough game, the final score 5 to 1 and it was really any teams game to win. We were playing 20 year olds. 4 runs batted in for our team was hit by a 55 and 65 year old. Yep the young whipper snappers gave out, but the old guys had a little left in the tank. I hit two runs in and the 65 year old hit two runs in. They played him too close, I was thinking you young guys think because he is old that he can't hit far. Yep, he burned them good. LOL. They might call us the Geritol Twins.

That is why I never complained at an umpire. First it would do no good. Second, unless I am willing to do it (Umpire) and make a difference, then I should not say anything. Besides, my eyes are not that quick and I would be an horrible umpire on a close call. Easy calls I can make. LOL.

Wes I can't blame you. If the complainers can do a better job, then they should do it. But all they want to is complain and not get involved.

Discussion: Looking for a team South Louisiana

At least you are in Louisiana, I am in Texas since our states share a boundary we can be on the same team. Maybe next year I might build a team if I ever see enough people. Right now people in Texas I have seen on this site are very few. About a half of team.

Dolfan, yes they just don't get it, I agree.

Mad Dog, it is a shame about those want a be's. I am not a home run hitter, but I never hit the ball better in my life and I am 55. It don't have to be a homer. I used strategy, even though I can't hit it over the wall, I have enough power to burn people if they get too close. I use a utrip bat at first and hit line drives, then when the outfielders move up, I break out the senior bat and it is toast time. LOL. Not over the wall but I get a kick out of it. Also I can go left or right, I really confuse teams how to play defense on me and I love it. I don't have to see it go over a wall to get a thrill, I am happy with a base hit, that is my job. It is other people's job to get me in. The younger guys never pick me up as a pick up player, but it is their lost. Sure not as fast on defense then the younger ones, but at least I don't constantly fly out to outfield because I am trying to hit homeruns.

Mad Dog, you think if they went back to aluminum bats would increase people playing again? Some of these ball parks better start thinking ahead. Maybe get young people interested in playing somehow, that way they can ensure a future of softball players.

Gary Heifner, great deal on the tee. What Homre said is correct, you want to practice at different heights. because a pitch is not always going to be perfect and sometimes you just have to defend the plate. My tee does not extend high enough, so I put it on top of a pickle bucket to get the ball to slightly below my chest area.

Texas Transplant I agree with you. I am part of the age before video games came out except pong just got started. But every day we went out and played outside. You probably remember some of these terms: "Right Field is closed" and "Pitchers hand as good as first". Because we did not have enough players to have two full teams, often it was 4 against 4, but we made it worked. I am in Houston Area and a lot of softball parks have closed down. I think if they try to have high school leagues in slow pitch for kids who were not good enough to make a baseball team, would have an opportunity to play and spark some interest in softball.

STL0 try searching Pop Toss you tube. Even though some of these guys are using it wrong (one guy has it on top of a milk crate and another has it inside a bucket) it gives you a general ideal on how it works. Diesel Dan, I don't know how long the spring last because I only had mine for about 4 weeks but I believe the spring has a lifetime guarantee if you buy directly from them. Here is a secret: They have a facebook page, ask them for a discount code, they gave me 10.00 off.

Obagain-yes you are correct, my problem is I don't swing the same way off of a tee as I do with a pitch ball. With the tee I can snap my wrist better and thus get more distance. If I can snap my wrist on a pitch ball as well as I can on the tee yes I would agree it would go farther.

STLO, to answer your question, the Pop Toss is convenient for me, but other people may have a different opinion, because they have to walk back and forth so much. But if you think about it this way, most likely someone who is buying this machine is playing in softball leagues or tournaments anyways. These softball players are in better shape than most people who play no sports, so taking 5 to 6 steps forward and 5 to 6 steps back and repeating that 50 to 100 times (I hit 100 balls or more during practice), it should not be a problem.

STL0, yes you do have to use your bat handle to push the spring down and lay the ball on it every time and walk back to home plate. But it is about 8-10ft away from you. I don't mind because the timer is adjustable, so it you are a little slower getting to batting position, you can set the timer to handle it. The product is about 140.00 but it needs no electricity.
I have seen pitching machines that can keep pitching to you that need electric that would do the job, but also there is a question of hauling the machine and these machines cost hundreds of dollars. The pop toss is maybe 3 to 4 pounds and I store it in the trunk of my car.
But like I said before, I have to practice hitting by myself a lot, so it is more convenient for me to go when I want to and not depend on having people to show up.
Two things about the pop toss. First, the legs will keep digging in the ground. I keep my practice balls in a 5 gallon bucket, so I used the lid of the bucket as a base for the pop toss (I set the pop toss on the lid of the bucket). Second, and this is so important. You have to take two 5 gallons buckets and place them inside each other and put in front of the pop toss, because if you hit the pop toss with a grounder, you will shatter it. The buckets in front of the pop toss will protect it and the pop toss can easily pitch over the buckets.

Discussion: Hitting from tee vs. hitting pitched ball

My own experience, I actually hit farther off of a tee, but since the ball is stationary, I can snap my wrist better on it. I don't sell these things but I have been using a gadget called a Pop Toss. I practice by myself a lot and the pop toss pitches the ball to me. My batting average went sky high the last 3 weeks. Now it could be two things, either I am getting lucky or the pop toss help with my eye and hand coordination. Or I am so old and seen so many pitches that I finally figure out how to hit the ball.
