| Dec. 30, 2015 Mac21 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: John X. E. McAndrew's Viewing I just arrived home from attending XE McAndrew's viewing in Archbald P.A. In another thread on this website there are several testaments as to what a great man XE was, in addition to being a great softball player and athlete. Anyone who attended the viewing tonight knows there is no need for words to express what a great man he was. When Joe Maines and I arrived in Archbald around 4:30pm, after driving up from South Jersey, I turned onto Main Street where the funeral home was located. We could see police cars up ahead with lights flashing. We did not expect to witness what we did when we pulled up in front of the funeral home. There was a line out the front door, around the side of the building and at least two blocks up the steep hill on the side street. We asked one of the police officers directing traffic where we could park and he just shrugged his shoulders and said good luck. After driving around for 10 minutes we finally found a parking spot. We made our way to the end of the line which had gotten longer while we found a parking spot. We were joined there by Dana Kimmel and we waited in line for just short of two hours. During the wait more and more people made their way up that hill to get in line. The weather was not conducive to standing in line outdoors as it was damp and temperatures were in the low 40's however not one person got out of line the entire time we waited. I can't say for sure how many people attended the viewing but that line outside consisted of several hundred people for the entire two hours we were there and it was there before we got there and when we left the line still stretched up that hill. A thousand, two thousand? I don't know. What I do know is XE will be missed by more people than he ever could have imagined. We were only teammates for the last three years but I know how much I will miss him. That throng of people, family, friends, work associates and teammates is a tribute I will never forget. They beat us in the "If" game after we (Jersey Masters) lost our fist game in double elimination on Wednesday. We won 8 straight to get to the "if" game. Spicers is a great bunch of guys with real class!! |

We were moved down to AAA based on the performance review by SSUSA Staff. WE have not played very well in SSUSA sanctioned tournaments over the last year. As it turns out the players we thought were going to help retain our Major rating are not going to be playing with us. We will re-evaluate our position based on our performance in Glen Burnie. |

He always took the time to ask about family and was genuinely interested in how they were doing. It's times like these we should remember...softball is just a game...the important things are the people we meet and the relationships we build while being involved. Homer was a "big Teddy Bear" who will be missed. My condolences to all his friends and family. |

Another friend told me he broke 2 of his..so it appears they are not as durable as the balanced. Having said that...I just ordered another endload because they are hot!!! |

The 60 Major division at that tournament was very competitive with several 1 run games. As you said it's easy for Jim16 to say he'd gladly be 0-6 but I'd be willing to bet his team has never done that. It's always easy to say you don't care about winning when you win!!! And as the saying goes "show me a good loser..and I'll show you a loser"!!! |
| April 20, 2009 Mac21 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: New HR rule BruceinGa...If we were in the Spring Nationals this year we would play you...We play whomever we are scheduled to play. We're not there because SS-USA scheduled the Atlantic Coast Championships the same weekend and Virginia is a lot closer to New Jersey than Florida. We were in Mesquite and were the only team there that came from farther East than Colorado. We were scheduled to and played against GSF (60 Major Plus) there. My team (I actually didn't play that year...was only 59) won the SS-USA 60 Major National Championship in Seattle in 2006 by playing the best softball they ever played all in one tournament. Several players had career tournaments that weekend. They got moved up to Major Plus for 2007. The 3 best players (with all the HR power) left the team because they didn't want to play Major Plus, but we didn't wine and complain and ask to be moved down. We played Major Plus the entire year in 2007 and won 4 games against Major Plus teams. Last year we were reclassified Major and were very competitive while playing a little over .500 ball. We really can't compete with 60 Major Plus teams but we play them when we are scheduled to play them. I don't know what the solution is to getting teams classified where they belong and creating competitive divisions, but I know all of senior softball is facing serious problems. |
| April 19, 2009 Mac21 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: New HR rule Jim16...You are entitled to your opinion, but you were not at the tournament where we refused to play so you don't know the circumstances. You can read my post above and then add to it that there was the posibility we would have had to play 3 games that afternoon in our double elimination tournament. Turn Two was the only 60 Major Plus team there so the games were only "exibitions" for them. The TD could have set it up so that none of the 60 Major teams would have had to play 2 "exibition" games with the posibility of playing 5 games and being at the fields from 7:30am until 7:00pm on a hot & humid August day. We also had two players get injured, one on Friday and one in the game that morning. I don't have to justify to you why we decided not to play that game, but it was not because we didn't want to play against Donnie's team. We will play anyone anytime but the circumstances that day dictated differently. |

I thought someone explained the reason, but if not I will now. It was in Manassas last year. You were the only 60 Major Plus team there. On Friday they had you play your preliminary games with the 55 Major's and Major plus teams...which by the way you won easily. On Saturday morning they set up a single elimination 60 Major Plus Championship between you guys and the four 60 Major teams. This was only done to give you guys your 5 games. They had you play in a play-in game at 8:00am which you won 40 to 5 in 4 innings. We played one of the other 60 Major teams at 8:00am and beat them. Both of the losing 60 Major teams then went back to their hotels to rest up for the 60 Major double elimination that started at 2:00pm. At 11:00am you then played the 60 Major team that was given the bye and beat them 34 to 5 again in 4 innings. That team now also went back to their hotel to rest for the 60 Major double elimination. So now the senario is they wanted us to stay and play you at 12:30pm and then start our 60 Major double elimination at 2:00pm having been at the field since 8:00am (in the mid August heat) while the other 60 Major teams were back at their hotels resting or getting something to eat after only playing one game (two of them having only played 4 inning games against you.) We refused to play the game because we felt it was unfair for us to have to play another game immediatly before starting our double elimination, NOT because it was against you. We have played you in the past (suprisingly a couple games have been realitively close) and will play you in the future if scheduled to do so. By the way, as I'm sure you remember, they did the same thing to the four 55 Major teams because Hollis was the only 55 Major Plus team there. The remaining 55 Major team also refused to play that last game against Hollis so they had you and Hollis play at 12:30 and you back doored them in 4 or 5 innings too. |

| March 23, 2009 Mac21 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: the history of pitcher safety concern Omar...Your last sentence summed it all up. It's the equipment of today. Back in those days you talked about we used aluminum bats and SB-12's that were mush after 3 innings...we always gave the umpire two balls and he threw in a new one after 3 1/2 innings. I also pitched and got my share of whacks back then but you almost couldn't get hurt. I took a line drive in the eye socket and finished the game (turns out it did break my nose), but I don't even want to think about what damage would have been done with todays bats and balls. I got hit in the shin last year in April and didn't heal until July. Back then we played on a field that was 317' down the left field line and the fence went straight across so it only got longer as you went across. There would be at most a dozen home runs hit there a year and we were in our 20's and 30's back then. Last summer our 4 hitter who turns 50 this year hit 4 out in one game and they were to left center where it is about 330'. So to answer your question yes, it's the bats and balls that have caused the concern for pitcher saftey. |

I understand the rule and I'm aware of the "White Paper" on the application and iterpretations of the PPR and have read it more than once. However, there have been posts on this message board that indicate it is not being applied correctly. There were posts that complained that an umpire was callig dead ball outs if the ball passed through the pitchers box without striking the pitcher. Another post complained that line drives that passed directly over the pitchers head were called DBO's. There were a couple other examples that I don't remember at the moment...but my point is if the rule is going to stand, lets make sure it's applied correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it the rule should never be applied unless the ball actually strikes the pitcher in the head, neck, torso or legs and in some instances (which are explained in the "White Paper") the arms including the glove. At no time should the rule be applied if the ball does not strike the pitcher. I know that before we start any game this year we will ask the umpire to explain how he or she intends to apply the PPR. |
| March 6, 2009 Mac21 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Ratings George, We won the Worlds in Seattle in 2006 and were moved up to Major Plus for 2007...We didn't complain even though we knew we were not a Major Plus team. We won 4 games against Major Plus teams in 2007 and appealed our rating at the end of the year. We were moved back down to Major for 2008. It's not the end of the world to be moved up...just grin and bare it and you'll end up where you belong. |

It's obvious to most of us that no matter how much whining there is about them...they are not going to be changed. Only time will tell how the rules will play out. So we either play ball with the rules as they stand or you sit on the sidelines as it appears Einstein has chosen to do. I only ask one thing. Since we are going to have to play with the Pitcher Protection Rule the only thing I ask is that the rule be handed out and explained to all umpires at every tournament so it is applied correctly and uniformly. It is obvious from previous posts that not all umpires understand the rule and how to apply it. |

The "Tournament Giude" you sent out with the paper conflicks with itself and has two different dates in July. Come on guys we need to know the correct dates. |
