| Sept. 6, 2011 Brock | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Denver Inaugural SSUSA tourney As current president of the Scrap Iron Club and playing LCF on two teams that did not fare well this weekend, Scrap Iron Master Collision 60s and Scrap Iron 65s Redux, I must say that I had my doubts before this tournament when I saw that 12 of the 16 teams were Colorado teams. However, for Terry and his team at SS USA, I must eat crow. I thought everything went like clock work and I heard no grumbling from anyone about playing only other Scrap Iron teams which some did. I also want to thank the four teams from out of state that did attend this inaugural tournament. We have better fields in the Denver area and I hope Terry and the City of Aurora can work something out for the Western Nationals in Aurora at the Aurora Sports Complex in the near future on top of the the Rocky Mountain Classic which appears to be on the road to success in the future. Steve, it was great talking to you and we'll see you on the field in Dalton this weekend assuming they can get the fields dry by Thursday. Greg Broeckelman |

Double Edge from California won the 60 major worlds last fall and were moved up to major plus. About two weeks later they folded the team. I believe Double L Roofing is a Florida team. I play for Master Collision in Colorado. We were beaten by Double Edge in the finals of the winner's bracket and ended up third in the Worlds behind Double Edge and the KC Kids. For bbullet, I've been scratching my head trying to figure why you were moved up also. |
| July 18, 2011 Brock | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: night games I agree with anyone in this discussion suggesting we don't play under the lights. In Phoenix, Cesar Chavez has already been mentioned but Desert West is no better. I talked to Fran the last two years about this. I play on both a 60s, Master Collision, and 65s, Scrap Iron 65 Redux and I know nobody on either team wants to play under the lights. Even though our Master Collision team was fortunate enough to avoid playing at night last year at Desert West, other teams did and also complained about the lights. Fran told me last October that Desert West had received grant money and that the lights were going to be upgraded with it. Someone will know this October. Even if they're better, I still suggest not playing under the lights. I'd rather go back to a four day world tournament instead to avoid someone getting hurt or worse yet, killed. |
| Feb. 15, 2011 Brock | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Playing 2 age groups I play with 60 and 65 major Scrap Iron teams in Colorado which works very well with SS USA. The 65s play during the week and 60s on the weekend. I like to play a lot so this works for me. I turned 65 last year and started playing both age divisions and will be doing so again in 2011. The biggest issue for me besides the additional expense is being away from home for a week at a time since my wife doesn't travel with me very much. |

Post results here To Bart Prieve and the entire Scrap Iron Diamonds 60s team, a huge congratulations. As is Master Collision, this team is another one of the 12 total teams in the Scrap Iron Club in Colorado. Now we have a team moving up to AAA. Great job Bart. Thanks for the info Dwayne!! Post results here To the whole Double Edge team, congratulations on a great win in a bigger than expected bracket. Pushin60, I agree with you about the fields; they were in great shape. Overall things were good but I'm sure those of you who played under the lights found them to be poor at best and the cooling elements for the water fountains in the dugouts didn't work for the most part so ice water should have been in all of the dugouts. I talked to Fran Sunday morning and she indicated the city has received a grant to redo the lights completely so they should be better by next year. | Oct. 12, 2010 Brock | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: need a new knee This guy isn't playing tournament ball as we know it but he does play senior softball in Colorado Springs. He had both knees done several years ago. He plays second base and runs bases for others during games and is FAST. If I didn't know his history, I would not know that he has two new knees. Good luck! | Sept. 7, 2010 Brock | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: LVSSA 2 Playing with Master Collision we had four games on Saturday due to us being the lucky team that had to play an extra round robin game. Somehow we were able to squeak out a win each game even though we played more games than anyone else that day in our division including two in the afternoon. Just a suggestion. Why not go back to starting this tournament about a month later and finish before the Huntsman Games as was done in past years. It will still be hot but should not be as hot as starting in August. I assume LVSSA people still read this message board. |
| Aug. 4, 2010 Brock | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: California Championships We are working with the City of Aurora close to Denver to land the Western Nationals next year. With United having a hub in Denver and Southwest flying from many locations to Denver, it's easy and fairly reasonable to get in and out. Aurora has a 12 field complex that is an excellent playing facility. Because, as Jack says, we have to travel tyo all of these tournaments that it gets to be expensive for the players. I also play on Master Collision and am disappointed that only one 60 major team is in this tournament. If we're successful in landing the 2011 Western Nationals, we hope all teams that know the Scrap Iron Club and the competitive teams that we have will remember that when putting next year's schedule together and will give the Denver area a try. | Dec. 15, 2009 Brock | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Thoughts on no hit zone I don't get on here very often but I have to agree with all of you and I feel strongly about this also. You're actually taking more than two feet out of the middle that no longer needs to be defended. If one hits a pitch that is on the inside of the plate past the right corner of the pitching box, add another foot before it passes second base. The same is true if you take an outside pitch and hit it past the left corner of the pitching box. I haven't done the geometric calculations but I'm sure you now have three feet or more on either side of second base that no longer needs to be defended, six feet total. What we had before doesn't protect the pitcher and what we have now won't either. Infielders, especially SS and 2nd base were always helped by an excellent fielding pitcher because they could help plug the 5/6 and 3/4 holes because they knew they didn't have to defend the middle. Now nobody has to defend the middle no matter how good or bad the pitcher fields. The answer still is that pitchers need to take steps to protect themselves. This new rule is not the answer. |
| Oct. 22, 2008 Brock | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: NIght games in Phoenix 60 AAA After playing under the lights Friday evening on a field that was actually better lit than the one we played on Saturday evening, I relayed my feelings to Fran Saturday morning. I suggested that if they're going to continue playing night games to at least have a supply of white balls available. They would be somewhat easier to see than the optic yellow balls at night. The lighting on the Desert West fields was terrible and night games should not be played at that complex, especially for seniors who have more problems seeing at night anyway. | Feb. 25, 2008 Brock | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Prayers requested for Murl Skalla I stopped and saw Murl this past Saturday and brought him this thread so he could see the concerns and love expressed by everyone. According to his daughter, Stacy, he was having a good day Saturday and that was why I was able to visit with him. The recent days before Saturday were not so good and I know that some who stopped to visit were turned away. For those in Colorado, if you do stop to visit and are able to do so, they ask that you only stay 10 to 15 minutes. Continued thoughts and prayers for Murl are much appreciated. The tumor was malignant and the doctors have told Murl he probably has about a year to live, even with a chemo and radiation therapy regimen. He has been moved from the hospital to a therapy facility in Boulder, CO and may be able to go home in a couple of weeks. | Feb. 13, 2008 Brock | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Prayers requested for Murl Skalla Many of you know or know of Murl who has coached the Scrap Iron 60s Major Plus team the past several years and has been instrumental in Colorado and Senior Softball for many years. He hasn't been feeling well and was supposed to have a knee replacement today. However, he became very sick over the weekend and was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning. He had a tumor the size of a handball removed from the right temple area of his head last night and seems to be recovering at this time. The tumor is being anayzed to make sure it's not malignant. He will probably remain in ICU for several more days. They also think he had a slight stroke and does have a separated shoulder, possibly from a fall. I know he would appreciate everyone keeping him in their prayers. |

| Dec. 18, 2007 Brock | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Colorado player exploring opportunities in adjoining states The last two years I've played on the Scrap Iron Major Plus 60s team, a very good team having qualified for the TOC four times this year. I would like to see the team get better but some on the team wish to go the other way. Unless I get an exception to the rule so I can continue to play in Colorado, my only other option with the rules in place in SS USA is to seek a major or major plus team in an adjoining state. I'm a high on base % player, .700 + , play outfield, usually LC and still have good wheels at 62 years of age. Over the years I have made a number of all Tourney, American and World teams. I know there are major teams in NM, AZ and KS, maybe others. At this point, I'm trying to explore all options. Let me know if you might have a need for someone like me. My name is Greg Broeckelman.
