Discussion: Using weighted training balls, bat warmers, Rip It face guards & mighty grip

I attended a clinic today on hitting and pitching. During which we learned a few new things.

1. Weighted balls, used for warm up are a really bad idea. Can cause tears in the rotor cuff that may not show up for a year or so. Very bad for the elbow. The balls are intended for underarm throwing.
2. Bat warmers do not do what we think. To protect the bat we have to warm up the ball, the metal bats will cool off by the time you get to the plate and they will not work at all on composite bats.
3. A pitcher attending the clinic uses a batting helmet and face guard while pitching and batting (had a head injury). The guard was really poor in vision and Bill (homerun Bill) gave him a Rip It face guard. It was very light and great vision. I know not many use a helment but if you do I thought it was cool.
4. I also tried a product call Mighty Grip, a powder you put on the hands to make them tacky (like me). It worked well and did not get on the ball. I found it helped get a better grip on the ball which I have a problem with.

Discussion: Rit-it ASA 26oz

SSUSA told us this summer that we could not use our Rip It ASA bats, 34/28 because they said 'fastpitch' on them. We can use them in any other softball league world wide but SSUSA. Of course the whole program made sense since we can use a U2 but not a girls bat.!!!
Just another attempt to keep Rip It off the market, another plot from the CIA and the Miken task force.
I now have the senior ASA bat so all is well

We have hit the bat quite a bit, one of the team has one. We really tried to get a response but the bat is just mid level. Not bad but not great.
It seems to feel like a Combat painted over. Our team mate used it till about 800 hits or so till he put it away.
Not a freak or a senior ASA but nice bat still the same.

Taits;
In terms of fastpitch, SSUSA is the only group that will not let you use a fastpitch bat, they have no reason or have ever offered one.
The bats for slowpitch and fastptich are the same, except length and weight.
The Rip It fastpitch is a 34/28 which really makes it a slowptich bat that say's fastpitch. It beats me why SSUSA would even care, but they do and will not let you use it.
My guess is that it has to do with a plot by the CIA and a SSUSA private task force to keep girls bats from the hands of senior men. Or they just have a thing for yellow bats. Anyway, there is a yellow f/p, a black slowpitch and a yellow outlaw bat.
My grand DD swings the f/p
I use the black slowpitch and the outlaw bat for bp.
Have a Merry Christmas everyone....(no happy holiday junk here)

Discussion: ASA "Grandfathered" Bats no longer authorized beginning in 2008

don't blame ASA. They mess was created by the abuse of the old system by the bat makers. The prime excample was the first U2 with an ASA stamp on it. All, and I mean everyone knew it was not an ASA bat yet Miken put the stamp on it anyway. From there the whole program of trusting the bat companies to 'do the right thing' when right out the window.
ASA had to find another way to make the playing field fair so in 2006 all bats had to follow the same standard and have the same indepent lap do the testing.
The Freak and all the other bats on the list above came from the period of neophite testing, before it became level and fair. That is why the banning. Also note that there are no more banning after 2006. All bats that pass the ASA test are good to go.
If we are to be upset, we need to foucs that to the bat compainies of years past and the gray area of bat testing. So if was part ASA and part bat companies but not just ASA.
I have heard that ASA is looking into a 'senior' divison that would allow better balls, better rules for seniors and maybe a better bat allowed.
One more point, ASA looks at senior softball as the thousands of retired communities that play rec softball. This groups want to play on a safe level, many of the players have not picked up a glove in 200 years and do not want a U2 shooting rockets at them. So ASA is the way to go. The more serious players have SSUSA. For us lower life forms, we have ASA.

I have heard the senior elite will be back with the 120 stamp by fall 07. After all the red tape about contracts, SSUSA and buy in programs goes away. Just hear say and I hope this pans out.

By the way, there are two leagues that I know about that allow the senior elite for play even withot the stamp. These guys know the differance between at good bat and pile of BS.

Cast my vote for a 27oz. I used a 27 freak before the senior ASA bat. Which I have a 28. If you guys made a 27, I would buy another one..

Is there a product that will help me get a better grip on the ball and the bat. My hands get tight in the cold and I am having a hard time holding the ball.
For batting I started using batting gloves but still have a hard time.

Thanks for any help here...

The Wood: The black ASA bat is very good but not even close to the U2. I am not a bat expert but belive that no ASA bat can come close to the U2, Combat Senior or the Rip It Elite.
We have hit the black ASA bat and found it very stiff till about 300 hits, then it opens up well. Our guys like the swing feel the best, pop is like the freak but the swing is better. Would like to hear some other opinions as well.

Hey guys;
Just for fun (I saw this on another site), how far can the best hitters in senior softball hit a ball with an ASA bat & ASA ball, no freaks, just 98mph bats...?

The new black Rip it senior is only for seniors. It has mico chip that can read how much BS is in the blood stream. Based on that data it can tell if the player holding the bat is a ture senior of not. The BS count is a new patent pending device which will keep the bat out of players below the age of 55, unless of course their BS level is that us old farts.
I also understand that Matt is offering a no-strike out or douple your money back.

It is really hard for me to judge an ASA bat, since I think they all stink. The Senior ASA is (in ASA terms) a great felling bat. With a ASA ball (rolled up pair of socks) it can tough to judge the pop but the swing is that of the Senior Elite (outlaw bat). In my humble judgement the senior ASA hits the same as the first freak (after 500 + hits). Then again I can't hit well so we should wait for the real hitters to tell us.
I can tell you that I saw 'homerun Bill' crank one in Sun Lakes yesterday about 320ft using the senior ASA and an ASA ball (a few of us are using the senior ASA test bats).
