An umpire should yell "dead ball", not that this would help a batter distinguish. I agree with B.J., as usual.

The family just put out a much better obituary with his picture:

Bruce, thank you for sharing this. My condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and softball framily. That is the only bad thing about Senior Softball is that our circle continues to get smaller. Just imagine the tournaments going on in Heaven though. I am glad that I got to see you this year again. Let's hope that we both have many more years with this life and game.

Ralphie's family asked that I post this from them:

If people would like to donate in lieu of flowers, they can make a donation to A Few Good Men Riverside. It’s a small community organization that provides mentoring and school supplies to children in the Riverside Community. If people would like to know more about the org, they can visit their Facebook page: A Few Good Men Riverside. To make a donation in my father’s honor, they can do so via Cash App with the following name: $2020FGM

The funeral service will be live-streamed on Facebook starting at noon on Monday Oct 19. The Facebook page is: Stuart Mortuary, Inc.

These responses made me smile because we affectionately called him Bat Man. He did love to trade. Until the end he wanted a bat that I was able to talk a bat representative out of that was never made in production. He also liked the bat that Kevin made and gave me that had a tribute to Coachie on it but knew that I would never give it up. I am guessing that there was a heck of a senior softball tournament in Heaven yesterday.

My heart is broken. We just lost Ralph Adams. He died doing something that he loved, hitting softballs with his friends at Riverside. I guess that Coachie must have needed a good first baseman on his roster. They loved each other dearly.

Discussion: The Moral of the Story

While this is not softball related, it is senior related. A friend of mine shared this with me, and I liked it enough to pass it on and hopefully get a smile or two:

A touching story of kindness........
I was in the drive-through this morning and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn, because I was taking too long to place my order.
“Take the high road,” I thought to myself.
So, when I got to the first window, I paid for her order along with my own. The cashier must have told her what I'd done, because as we moved up she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed "Thank you.", obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with a kindness.

When I got to the second window, I showed them both receipts and took her food too. Now she has to go back to the end of the line and start all over.

Don't honk your horn at old people.

Discussion: Passing a preceding runner

B.J., I have only ever had this happen once to me, fortunately in league play and only the second out. The preceding runner stopped on 3B. The runner behind him hit the inside of the bad (instead of making the usual wide turn). I called him out. "I can't believe that you called me out." "I can't believe that you did not see a 250 pound man standing on 3B." The joys of softball. I hope that all is good for your bunch down there.

Spider9188, I do not. You would want to ask Amy as she is taking entries. I was hoping that with Shelbyville that we would have some older teams as a couple of the 75+ teams call it home.

You might look at the Florida Women's Half Century. Their Facebook page is Florida Women's Half-Century Softball League, Inc. Their regular web page is https://fwhcsl.com. I wish that we had more women playing overall.

Dave and titanhd, happy Father's Day. Dave, you are the best at scheduling that I have ever met. I wish that was a skillset that I possessed. I know that not having to schedule a day for different divisions at Dunn has got to be a welcome relief. I only see one glitch, titanhd, if I am in a division that has played two days at Shelbyville and am staying at a motel there, I am probably not going to be too happy having to get up early on Sunday to drive 40 minutes to play in Columbus, especially if I am from a team that lives north.

17Black, Shelbyville is a big improvement over Dunn. Dave has scheduled it the last few years, but as you know it comes down to numbers in each division as to where divisions best fit. I know when I ran a team that in a situation like this, I would make two reservations. I would cancel the other one when I found out where we were actually playing. I hope that everything goes alright for you. Stay safe and catch up with you soon.

I would think that it is safe to say that it will depend on the number of entries in age divisions how field assignments will be done. The ISA director told me that most teams stay in Edinburgh which is north of Columbus. The parks are about 40 minutes apart, and most of the drive is I-65. Columbus is a sixplex, and Shelbyville is a fourplex. Let me know if you have local questions. It is one of the best senior softball events in the midwest.

Most of the competitive teams play in a Thursday night league at Midwest which they think might start after the 15th based on the Governor's state reopening plan. They have a Facebook page, Central IN Senior Softball Competitive Thursday night League. If you can join that page, you will have contact with the teams.

titanhd, true and like Columbus, it is mostly concrete. There are some trees behind the diamond by the fairgrounds. I have yet to see a senior go to the splash park. Both parks are still better than Dunn. It got hit by a tornado last year, and no one noticed. That is pretty telling. One of the light poles was snapped in two, and the shade trees were blown away.

Yes, titanhd, the dust bowl is gone from the schedule. If you've never been to Shelbyville, it is very nice.

Neither park is in Marion county (Indy) which has tighter restrictions than the rest of the state. The private parks there are opening after June 15 by the opening plan. I did get a chuckle on the way home because of you. Should I have told you that you could land the team plane at the Columbus airport? Every team has one, right? Just let me know what other questions that you may have. I know that we may have lost a few players to the casino and track near Shelbyville.
