Too bad I do not live and work in your neighborhood. I would love to act as "Closer" or Relief Pitcher/Utility player for you crew. Great bunch of guys.

Most likely, everyone but the Hard Core Seniors are studying something other than softball until after the hollidays.

I can almost recite the theme songs for Sugar Foot and Cheyenne. For the life of me I can not pull up the missing piece of this trilogy.
Have Gun, Will Travel (Palladin) was another favorite show growing up.

Discussion: SPA World in 2008

The wife played in the USSSA 40+ World in Gallatin Tn this month. Quite the nice facility. Rumor has it that SPA may take over this established time slot and do Womens Nationals there in 2008.

Tourney results here
http://www.usssa.com/sports/Tournament3.asp?TournamentID=375729

Too bad SPA can not get the details online that other sites do.

Monty, the SilverHawks crew was getting better with each tournament. Every one of you did better than me. At least you were healthy enough to attend! Greetings to Billy and the rest of the team.

If SPA or any other organization ran their circuit as well as Rabbit runs his team, all the players would be rated. It would not be difficult to rate a 750 hitter with an 850 OBP and 30 home runs as Major talent. Neither would it be difficult to rate any of the players in the league as the statistics for each game of every tournament would be a mouse click away. Cheers to Indiana Classics for an outstanding season. I will bet that several teams at Dalton had 6+ Major talent players on the field.

What is difficult is being self sponsored and building(and qualifying) a tournament team that can compete with all the major talent in AAA. I feel that $PA has sold out the spirit of competition to the bigger sponsors. This is an opportunity for SSUSA to step up and establish a rating system for players and teams. Build a level field and we will come(as long as we are on the right side of the grass).

Lefty; I have no plans of retiring... if I can work, I can Play! It is just that I feel so fragile and am profoundly aware of the Grace of God at work in my life.

Too bad SPA can not post the tournament results like SSUSA does. Seeing how I was laid up on the couch nursing an Ultra II induced bone bruise on the right ankle, I would love to look at the match ups, critique the brackets and envision being a part of the madness.

Please, post your experience here.

Rabbit, no wonder there are no teams in the Major Tournaments, they are getting away with playing AAA. Our goal as Monster Softball was to recruit some position players and play Major next year.
I remember knocking out Texas Legends last year at McKinney. They could not keep the ball in the park. We squeeked out a nice win but they really underachieved with the talent they had.

I have been hawking this forum for any news. I hope to see a dedicated thread about the tournament.

What really stinks is playing 3 of the same teams you played all year. Why are the brackets so misaligned? Not one team wants to line up against the teams they have fought with all summer long. This goes back to the Tournament Directors. Please set some guidelines for setting the field that take into account location. Better, spread out the teams that play against each other before assigning seeds.

I worked out all year with this weekend as the goal only to sit at home nursing a bone bruise on the right ankle. I am not so sure there is a next year for me. I missed seeing my softball friends too.

The Wood:
1) The local Senior leagues in the mid south are diminishing rather than growing. I know dozens of rec players shuffled out of the mix as the strong teams recruit new 50 year old players. This is similar to the situation the older/upper division Tournament teams are facing. There are very few 55 Major teams. They appear to me to be made from the better 50's players as they move up.

2) Fair Rules
Administrators (SPA, SSUSA, NSA, et al.)
DataBase: Use the Database as a tool to keep up with players and teams.
Use the same identifying feature as a key (Drivers License for instance), All players are rated, Teams are rated and an individuals participation is recorded. Rating players and teams would be easier with documented history to back up decisions.

3) A motivated person or group skilled with software is necessary to build an efficient Data base. The Administrators that rate the teams and players would only need to know how to use it. This is a Catch 22 situation as the people that know what information that is most important are seldom skilled with software. Those with the computer/software skills may not know what information is necessary.

4) Better Managers: Rabbit comes to mind. I have lined up against his team off and on for my entire senior history. This years team is strong enough to play Major and win. I believe he is allowed to play AAA (this year) because of the good he has been for Senior Softball all these years. There is a method to his madness. His team lines up to win. Promoting Senior Softball is not his agenda yet is a byproduct of the character of his team. The point being, he manages to win and not promote Senior Softball, yet he does both. This is not the case with every winning manager.

Better Sponsors: We could field better talent if money was not an issue. What I have seen from big sponsors is they expect to win. More money sponsors will promote winning. It is up to the Administrators to promote Fairness.

5) Rec players getting cast aside? This is my personal observations of our local leagues and not Tournament ball. Playing in a National Tournament with a large field of equal talent borders on a Spiritual Experience.
Blessings to all in Dalton this weekend!

The Change that occurs locally is not for the good of Senior Softball. The Good teams get Better and the recreational players get used and then shuffled to the side.
The Tournament Future should not be left up to the Better Managers, Bigger Sponsors or Administrators. Establishing and Maintaining an equal playing field requires the same tools used in any socially managed situation.

Fair Rules: (Already in Place)
Administrators:
National Data Base: Here is where the entire Senior Softball Community is lacking. It is the digital age but most of us lack the skills to create, implement and manage a Structured Query Language Database or any database for that matter.
Rank players and maintain the database. The administration of fairness would improve.

Here is a link to a local pdf file where the Park Administrator has started keeping the records of teams that play. It is quite simple but quite the valuable tool for teams coming into the league. This format is probably an Excel Spreadsheet. The Effort is commendable.

SSUSA's Tournament Brackets, Results and Site Maps are a model for all organizations to adopt. Now, where is the DataBase?

Discussion: Old boys vs college girls ?

Playing Co-ed with the wife in the general population, we see some college girls coming into the league. They struggle making the adjustment from fast pitch to slow pitch hitting. It takes a full season before they start hitting well.

The high school coaches will not let their girls play slow pitch in the summer either.

Now if you let them swing Ultra II's and they can make the mechanical adjustments, watch out.

Discussion: CHollis: Weight Loss

John, no real weight problem here. Just trying to add a little levity to the task of losing weight. Still, eating is the greatest simple pleasure on earth.

In the winter months when I put on 10 extra pounds, I feel real sluggish, uncomfortable and my joints ache much more than normal. The winter months seem like prison to me. It is months before I can get out and hit some balls, ride the bike and pitch to the wife. Being physically active distracts me from the desire to eat in the middle of the day. In the summer, the heat and working outside tempers the pleasure of eating. After getting use to not eating lunch on a regular basis, the desire to eat at that point in the day fades.

Cheers to every little success.

Keeping my weight down is a matter of economics. I save my lunch money so I can go to several tournament a summer. I expect to drop another 5 pounds by Dalton.

Tater, I hope to see you there (on the other side of the bracket).

Discussion: NSA Finals

Greetings from Memphis. With the trip home being about 4 hours long, I though about the Classics team still on the road as I was warming up for Sundays nights league game. I trust you all had a safe trip home.

On the Boaz AAA tournament, cheers to all 8 teams for the comradery, fellowship and the display of character that is exposed in trying situations. I hope there are enough teams in Dalton that I dont have to play any of these in the first round. I would not want to see Scrap Iron in the first round AA tournament either. Still, I look forward to seeing all of them at any tournament I am blessed to attend. The laughter of the wives in the parking lot, off the cuff comments from behind the fense(when I can hear them), an acknowledgement from an apponent on a play or hit, our successes and failures..... all add to a rich and rewarding experience. As you have taught me at these games, I wish to thank God for the blessings he has poured out upon us. May he continue to keep you and your families in his grace.

In closing I must echo Rabbits own comments of the previous tournaments they have won; excellent defense and gritty character. Too many moments of outstanding softball to comment on because the competition was tough across the board.
