Einstein, I know you write what you mean and I know you are for hot bat/ball combinations. However, honestly I am prepared to take risks but not unnecessary ones.

Cliff, Well written buddy. I was going to mess with you but decided to be nice.

Double L, Jim Tharp invited me to play with him. Does that mean we are teammates? If so, Greg Thomas told me he has us playing in the top bracket against Hendricks, Team Houston and a couple of other real good teams. I'm looking forward to it. I'm living north of Houston over the winter. This is my first winter here and I am playing winter league and enjoying it. It's pretty good for a Chicago area guy to get to play winter ball and not be in a dome. Double L--what's your name? Larry Lopez? If so we spoke about a month ago.

I don't believe any team likes to be on the losing side of a blowout. In basketball you can pull your starters and require a minimum of five passes between shots. That's easy for the coach. You hold the score down and your team has a chance in a game to practice another important part of the game. Maybe also require all shots to be taken outside the paint.

In softball it's a little different. I have been on the winning side a few times of blowouts. I then have had players intentionally make outs or bat opposite handed. I can tell you that batting opposite handed is not good because the other team feels like we were just rubbing it in their face. We have had opponents sometimes just give up but if they don't try hitting to opposite field BUT STAY AWAY FROM THEIR PITCHER.

Einstein, Now I find out you were hit in the jaw. What next? I know what your writing about when you state you watched your pitch too long. Sometimes you want to measure your distance by watching the arch and other times measuring the wind for accuracy. Then before you know it you're surprised that the pitch is coming back at you and you didn't get set for defense. However, I still believe there isn't a pitcher in senior ball who can properly defend for a line shot coming from certain power hitters with an Ultra or Machenkos Combat. Time will tell unfortunately.

Einstein, You have broke both arms AND a leg from batted balls? How many times have you been hit while pitching?

I must admit I have been hit a number of times while pitching also. My question to you is that you wrote that it is your fault when you get hit. Do you really believe if a good power-hitter comes up the middle you could catch the ball and it is just a matter of being ready? Or is it because you don't want Clatterbaugh or some other middle hitter to come at you again? Do you think it makes a difference to them? I know you challenge hitters at third when you play there. Don't you have any worry about the hitter when you are on the mound? Is this the main reason you are opposed to the new home run limit?

I really am curious because I know I'm not the only pitcher that has concerns on the mound. Just saying sorry doesn't cut it with me. Are we heading back to bat wars to protect our own pitchers? Is there any other solution?

Einstein, I appreciate you clarifying things. It's nice to have a variety of local tournaments to play in that still attact major and major plus teams. I am wintering in Texas north of Houston and getting to know some of the local guys. I am playing in the February 21 tournament here with some major and major plus teams participating. It would be nice to have this variety in the midwest. Right now in the midwest there is an occasional snowball tournament and they are not fun.

Einstein, You have complimented me on a number of my posts so now I want to compliment you on yours.

I feel bad for you however, in that you would prefer not to play the game you love rather than to play under rules that both teams must play by--your team and your opponent. Certainly there have been rules in place in prior years that you didn't like but you didn't stop playing as a result.

You state that you have a number of teams that want you to play so they must believe that you still have game. Why would you quit.

I seem to recall that you have broken both arms. Is that right? I know one time you were on the mound. How did you break the other one?

I pitch quite often and I know with the hot bats that I could see a screamer come up the middle at any time. Not all hitters are pull hitters. Eliminating the limit on home runs would not eliminate balls hit up the middle. The current rule regarding hitting the pitcher would not eliminate that from occuring also.

I just really don't understand why someone who loves softball would quit over this.

Discussion: MRSA (Staph Infection) and the senior player

I wear shin guards now when I pitch and here is why.

Two years ago I took a hard shot flush to my lower shin just above the ankle. It swelled and formed a scab. A week later it was more painful then the day of the injury. The first surgeon I saw called the thick scab that formed an eschar. He was not sure whether to remove it or let it stay to protect the damaged shin. He tried relieving the pressure by sticking a needle deep into my shin but this didn't help.

A few days later it looked like the scab was ready to come off. So I pulled it off thinking this would help. Unfortunately what came out was quite thick and kind of surprised me. I kept pouring peroxide into the open would thinking it would help but I learned later that this kills good tissue along with infected tissue.

The next weekend I went swimming in a lake. Shortly after that the infection became more severe. Common over the counter meds did not help. Finally I went to a number of different surgeons to see what could be done. Finally one of the doctors put on a glove and dug out the dead tissue. I was left with a hole in my shin slightly bigger than a silver dollar all the way to my nice white shin bone that could now be plainly seen. He then had me take an xray to make sure there was no infection in the bone because that would be more serious. Then advised me there was nothing else he could do. He sent me to a wound clinic and for a month I had to wear on my leg a portable wound vac. It basically kept sucking pressure on the wound so it could continue to drain the infection away and gradually closed the large wound to form a smaller wound and scab that over time healed.

He told me I could have lost my leg had I waited any longer to see him. So seven doctors and a wound clinic later I was back playing again but wiser about wounds. Big Bird (Danoski) had this happen to him two or three times.

DC Pete, Here is my conclusion. The associations that do not allow a good bat and ball will suffer in terms of attendance and thereby revenue will fall. I agree with your apparent point. It is better for the bottom line to allow the game to be played where the ball will jump off the bat. I am not just refering to home runs but line drives and good hitting.

However that is my concern. The mild penalty currently in place really does not protect the pitcher. In my opinion here is where we are heading--you hit at my pitcher and we will hit at your pitcher. It's the way it used to be but now consider the weapons that are being used. It's a recipe for disaster.

Ronnie, we have not decided on our tournament schedule for this year but I would guess we will lead off with the Brickyard Classic as we normally do in early May

Nancy, since I am half Irish I am requesting an Irish wake. Enjoy the party.

Ronnie,

You haven't been paying attention. I was wearing them last year when you came to watch. I've been wearing them for two years. After looking at your shin last year I will keep wearing them for a while.

I talked to Larry but he's not sure about the status of his team for this year. Randy Hendricks is apparently forming a new 60's. I will talk to him tonight when we play. All is good. See you around the diamonds this year.

Ronnie, As soon as I'm dead you sell me out for Cliff to pitch? You are in the will but not for my house in Wisconsin (Waupaca). I am leaving you all my cracked and broken Ultras.

Butch, I no sooner leave this earth and you are advertising for a new pitcher. Rodney and me get no respect.

The point of my post was to get some more lively posts to an issue that in my opinion is still not resolved. I hope we can avoid the bickering and stay close to the issue with some constructive ideas. Although SSUSA will not respond directly they are reading these.

Steve Imlay, I know you're a great guy and hitter but some of your friends want to nominate you for sainthood. I'm in Houston for the winter. When are you going to visit? I'm playing Mondays and Wednesday nights south of Houston. Bring your gear.

I was killed last night

I pitched in a game where Ultras were allowed last night. The weather was clear. The field conditions were good. The lights were good. The player protection rule was in effect. I was hit in the head so at least the batter was out. But now I’m dead.

My thinking going into senior softball with this pitcher protection rule was that it would allow some protection for me so maybe I just wasn’t alert as I should be. Maybe I was a little tired also. I had played quite a few games recently. Too bad I wasn’t hit in my shin guards instead. But now I’m dead.

Now people will probably say that I shouldn’t have been pitching but I’m a good pitcher. I’m also a decent defender with good reflexes. But that ball was on me before I could react. I’m sure the hitter was just trying to hit a hard shot to my right or left but he missed his location and hit me instead. So now I’m dead.

A lot of hitters can hit to a location real well some can’t and don’t care. We used an extra infielder to take away the middle but it didn’t get to him. We thought we had him read. So now I’m dead.

With two strikes on him he had to hit my pitch. I gave him a tough one to hit but he did what he could—up the middle it came and as I have said-- now I am dead.

The point of the story is that there is no protection really in the rules. By removing the limit on homeruns won’t guarantee that the pitcher wont be hit. Certainly the dead ball out for hitting the pitcher is ineffective. Should a batter be safe who tries to hit the pitcher and doesn’t. No. Should the hitter who tries to hit the middle and hits the pitcher be out. Probably. Will this stop either one from happening. Probably not.

It seems to me that if you want to protect the pitcher it’s the location of the hit that should be the determining factor. If it travels thru the pitchers box on the ground or in the air at a height that could or does hit the pitcher there should be a penalty. The penalty needs to be severe if you want to protect the pitcher. We know the bats wont change. So now I’m dead or maybe somebody else. The question is—can we afford to wait?

I agree with Pete13ia.

As a compromise keep the one up rule. It just means that two power team are battling which is what power teams want anyhow. It certainly means that both teams are competing and probably comparable in power. After you use your one up and another home run is hit it is an out.

Remember that each tournament director could conceivably modify and allow this change except for the Nationals. I believe this is the case????

Discussion: RULE CHANGES...COMMENTS

Over the years I have followed this message board and occasionally have weighed in with my opinion on various discussions and started a few of my own. The one thing I realize on any hot topic is that there is never a solution to which everyone will agree. On the issue of outs after home runs I would like to add the following as a recap as to why I believe the new rules are good as currently revised/written.

Recently one of the most viewed posts ever made surrounded keeping the Ultra II. Generally I think players would prefer to keep using them. From the perspective of SSUSA it seems with Miken as a major sponsor there is incentive and consideration has been given as to how to keep them. I think everyone realizes that slowly but surely most organizations that care about senior softball have now allowed them in attempt to keep senior players in the fold.

There has been considerable arguments, some heated, about the softballs that are used. While not a hot softball the Trump Stote seems to be a good softball especially considering the bats--Mikens and Combats--that can be used.

We come then to the need to keep our game of softball a balanced game that requires offense and defense. The home run rule without a strong penalty for home runs after a limit in Major and Major Plus puts the emphasis basically on offense. Certainly most of the proponents for the old rule without an out after the limit have come from mostly power hitting teams.

But the rules were only part of the problem. For us, most of the year was spent facing teams from outside the 55 major plus division in which we were required to play. In fact we decided to miss the upcoming TOC for the first time because we would have been unopposed. We have been unopposed within our assigned division of play quite often this year. So for us and other teams playing major plus it comes down to what rules make sense to encourage teams that are rated up at the end of the year to play major plus instead of playing games with team names or disbanding altogether and reforming a new team.

Now lets be honest power alone doesn't amke a good team. We had the opportunity this year to play Turn Two. A 60's team. They have nice balance and are a very good hitting team. They don't do it with power alone. It seems this is the way it should be. There is nothing more boring for an outfielder then to watch ball after ball be hit over their heads in the hot sun and not have a chance for a fielding play.

We want to play Major Plus next year--together. We will not play Major Plus and spend the money it requires to travel to tournaments and then find out we have no one within our division to play. We applaud SSUSA for recognizing the problem and for attempting to solve it for the sake of our investment in the sport and theirs. Besides, if I stop playing softball I told my friends I would play golf. And I hate to golf.

Discussion: Combining parts of the Major & Major + divisions

Charlie,

There are only 16 major plus 55 teams. Only half of them actually played in a tournament this year. About half of that group played in a national. Only three came to Phoenix. The numbers are similar for the other age brackets in terms of percentages.

The reason that half the teams don't play in tournaments is that they disband as soon as they are rated major plus. This is either due to the competition or due to the lack of teams who play in major plus generally.

The current rules only require that a team move up if they win a national that has at least four teams in your division participating. When teams stay down and reform they are usually very strong major teams and often win multiple nationals in the following year. This is counterproductive to the process of "graduating" a number of major teams to major plus since there are a small number of different teams then winning nationals.

Of course the new major plus game rules are also discouraging many major plus teams from playing in major plus or moving up to major plus. Thus the need for rules that tend to level the playing field which is what I have proposed. It seems that we have quite a few players who suppot a combination. It would be beneficial to hear from teams or players who would oppose it to find out what their reasoning is.
