May 13 VOODOOSPORTS Men's 40 34 posts | Hey all: Cant seem to find it in the rule book so thought I would ask here. Many on third no out, ball is hit in the air to left center. Guy on third takes off home while ball is in the air. The runner crosses the commit line (but not home line) and the ball is caught in the air. The runner then runs back over the commit line to tag up. Safe or out? some theories from last night 1. runner has the right to re cross the commit line to tag 2. its a "commit line" runner is out 3. runner must first cross home line then run back to 3rd before the throw to be safe. 4. dead ball out |
May 13 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | VOODOO ... Runner is OUT • Here are the answers to the True/False quiz, in order ... 1. FALSE 2. TRUE 3. FALSE (and pretty hilarious, too!) 4. FALSE (ball is live for any potential subsequent call) NOTE: Runner COULD be safe and run scores if he fails to return to tag and the defense fails to execute an appeal (live ball or regular appeal) |
May 13 VOODOOSPORTS Men's 40 34 posts | ok to understand further. on a fly ball and a runner on 3rd crosses over the commit line before the catch he is out but only based on an appeal play. is this what your saying. Defense would throw the ball to 3rd and even if runner was standing on 3rd by then he is still out because he passed the commit line. this rule works only for 3rd to home any other runner taking off on the hit has a right to get back to 2nd or first (before a throw) because of the lack of a commit line. Is this correct. |
May 13 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | What we are saying is: The base runner is immediately called OUT (and the ball remains live) when he re-crosses the commitment line back toward 3rd base ... This is an automatic call ... The ONLY way he could eventually be safe is if he proceeded to the scoring line/plate without re-crossing the commitment line AND the defense did NOT appeal that he left 3rd base early (before the fly ball catch) ... As for your scenario and understanding for runners in the 1B or 2B situation, you are correct ... |
May 13 VOODOOSPORTS Men's 40 34 posts | got it thank you. As an ump and player we discussed this last night to determine the right call. the guy that said he was out had the least experience in SSUSA. thanks again |
May 13 Benji4 Men's 55 289 posts | Vinny If the runners on your team would have paid attention in little league when they were taught to tag up on a fly ball especially when on third base with no outs you wouldn't have to ask the question. No wonder your team was looking to get reclassified.....hahaha Love ya brother |
May 13 DCPete 409 posts | That's the reason it's called the Commit Line and not the Cross over & Go back line . . . |
May 13 k man Men's 65 326 posts | Could be that some guys are afraid of commitment. Sorry, couldn't resist |
