Discussion: Need help with a rule

Situation:

Batter hits line drive to 3rd base, he catches it by his foot but his gloves comes off and lands on the ground with the ball inside it. (He picks up ball out of the glove and throws to first, but runner beats the throw)
I say it was a live ball and batter is safe.
Some people say it was an out because the ball never hit the ground.
Please let me know if I am correct or not.
Thanks

The impact of the ball was forceful enough to immediately cause the glove to come off the fielder's hand and land on the ground with the ball in it. Once the glove with the ball (and without the fielder's hand in it) touches the ground, a catch is no longer possible. Batter-runner is SAFE ... Good call, Coop ...
