Discussion: to SSUSA

Has SSUSA ever thought of allowing one player from outside their boundary limits to play ?
SPA does it and the people I have asked about like it.
It lets that friend that moves away still play with his friends. (or just to pick up a friend of a player that doesn't touch your state)
Just an suggestion for the next convention.
Brett
We are in that situation now, a player moved (at the end of last year) that had played with us for many years and can't now because of the rules.

Discussion: Calling all pitchers.

Dan
I have been pitching for close to 40 years
A couple of things to try:
* whatever you do, MAKE sure you end up in a position to defend yourself !!!! that's rule # 1
* Use the new rules to your advantage, most associations let you pitch from behind the rubber, start further back and walk up towards the plate, it helps with the distance.
* Use the 2nd bar of the backstop for a height reference, its usually 10 ft. or 12 ft. tall.
*Try throwing it like a bowling ball, a little spin might help you control it
* and pitch a million pitches.. pitch a lot of batting practice, it will help with muscle memory
* Strive for 1 walk per game, then 1 walk per day, then 1 walk per tournament.

Hope this helps

Good luck

Those divisions would work
The only thing I would do is give the major plus 8 HRs
That would make teams that just want to hit HRs have a place to play.

Omar, I believe the reason senior softball is declining is partly the rising expense of tournaments and the other is the way associations move teams up too quickly and those teams disband and those players that get rated major plus have no place to play.

I think the rule of thumb should be to let a team play in a division until they dominate for 2 years, then move them up.
Coming in the top 2 in Vegas one time shouldn't penalize your team. (and it happens) Maybe make a team that places in the top 5 ..2 years in a row in Vegas move up or a team that wins multiple tournaments in 2 straight years. This will let you build a team, compete, win, then have to move up. Most teams build around friends and to the strength of the division you are playing. Building a AAA team, winning one or two tournaments, getting bumped to major plus is no fun at all. Any team can have a good weekend and win a tournament, that doesn't make you too good to play in that division.

As always, just my 2 cents.

I can live with that..lol
If it betters the great game of softball, you can call it anything you want.
If you never change anything, and keep up with the way the game changes, how can it be the best that it can be?
I don't mind giving my opinions, and that's all they are, but look at the numbers of teams , the tournament prices, the 2 team brackets, the prize packages, etc in the last 5 years, has it gotten better or worse?
just saying
I use to hope for a 10 team bracket, now I hope to have more than 2 of us in a bracket.
It might just be in the south, but softball has been declining for years and us old guys need to do something to keep it alive. (the young guys sure aren't) Kickball is overtaking softball at most of the parks.
Just my thoughts
Like them or not, At least I'm trying....
Some folks just give it up... I would rather play

I would like to see a tournament try this. Maybe it will help, maybe it won't.
I think they would get more teams in each division (especially the 'lower")

Make the divisions as follows:

Rec...0 HRS /outs 5 runs per inning
Lower...3 HRS / outs with one up.....5 runs per inning
Upper... 8 HRS/single with one up.....7 runs per inning

(REC) This will let the teams that are mostly out for fun play in the rec division and not have to worry about getting killed all the time by "tournament teams".

(Lower) It would put all the teams that are now AAA and major play together with 3 HRs (outs) and one up, it will level out all the teams and will make larger brackets. It both teams are hitting HRs, let them, if not the big HR hitting teams can only hit 3 and will keep the games close. (if over the limit is a single, its just like open HRS, there is not really a limit)

(upper) Let the big boys play each other and hit all the HRs they want
This will be mostly the major plus teams that play each other now. I have no idea how to get more teams in this division.

This will mostly combine the AAA and major teams where they can have larger, better, bigger tournaments.

No one likes to play in a 2-3 team bracket.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Discussion: throwing a bat

Was it thrown or tossed?
If tossed to another player, should be no foul
If thrown, I agree, ejection
That's an umpires judgment call
My 2 cents

Curt
There CAN'T be any more teams next year.
The tournament was "full" according to the director. I sent a check in early (was told it was never received) and when I called to see why our team wasn't listed, he said it was full and had a waiting list.
SO that means that they had the maximum number of teams in this years tournament.
I also have been told by other coaches they were told the same thing.
Just some information to share.

Discussion: why won't SSUSA show teams entered ?

I will agree to disagree...lol
Another example is: If a team is looking for a tourney and they see 6 teams already in, maybe that would push them to enter .
There is always more than one way to look at things.
I also wish that all 3 associations would get together and schedule tournaments on selected dates to help get teams there.
IE: back to back weekends in the same area rarely see both tournaments doing well.
Maybe get them to have AA and AAA one weekend and Major and Major plus the other.
Just a suggestion.
I think bigger turnouts will be more beneficial for everyone involved.
It just will the heads of all 3 of the bigger associations to get together and make it happen.
I know the money is important, but the quality for the players should be the #1 priority.
And if more teams play, the money will take care of itself.
Just my 2 cents.

Discussion: why won't SSUSA show teams entered ?

SSUSA has better online features that the other associations, (IE message board, online registration is easier etc) but....
They will not show the teams entered in a tournament.
I guess they are worried that teams will complain or drop out etc, but I say show the teams and let who wants to play get in. Why worry about a couple of teams that cause trouble instead of making things better for larger % of teams that play? I have talked to other coaches and players and they would like to see who is in the tournament. They also might be a team or 2 that will enter because they see there are more than a couple of teams in their bracket. You never can tell until you try.
SPA and ISSA have a list of registered teams on their websites for the tournaments.
SPA shows they teams entered as soon and they pay. (I like this the best)
ISSSA shows the teams after the deadline, but at least they show who is entered.
Please give your opinion if you would like to see the teams that are entered as they get in.
I vote to see who's in.. We are playing no matter who is in or not.
I just like to be informed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Discussion: Staying Close

I always get better rates than the SSUSA rates.
Just use AARP and talk directly to the hotel.
And the locations will be out way before the tournament and the hotels will have plenty of time to sell the rooms.
Hotels will let you cancel rooms up until 4 pm of the day you arrive, so canceling them weeks before will be no problem.
I have been doing this for many years.
Hope this helps

Just Joe
Book hotel rooms and 3 different locations.
Then when you know where you are playing, you can cancel 2 of them. (doesn't cost you anything but time)
That's what I do.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Brett
PS. Always book a couple of extra rooms.
I book 8 at a time and still usually need another.

You have NO idea how much time I have or what I do for a living.
I am just passionate about the game of softball.
Maybe you need to spend more time on improving the game we play than worrying what I do on my spare time.

A friend of mine's team got 2nd in the 60 Majors last year in Vegas
All they got was individual medallions.
(AND bumped to Major Plus)
No tee shirts, no bats, not batting gloves, just a medallion.
I think the top 3 teams should have a good prize package.
This is the most expensive, biggest tourney of the year.
The 1st place team gets a HUGE package.
Hopefully someone will listen and take some of the extra money and get the 2nd and 3rd teams a better prize package. (I know we are not supposed to play for the prizes, but the Vegas tourney should be an exception.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Hope this gets to the right people.

Discussion: Hope this doesnt get taken down. Please give your opinions.

Thanks SSUSA
I know running an association this big is a BIG headache.
I have lots of ideas and suggestions, but they are only my opinion. Most of what I suggest come from running tournaments for 20 years (and the mistakes I made) and seeing the mistakes some tournaments and tournament directors keep making year after year.
With the technology we have nowadays, there is so much we can do to better senior softball (more participation, more teams at tournaments, more investors, etc)
There are MANY over 50 softball players that don't even know there is a place for them to play. If they ever would come out , they would be hooked again.
Thanks for keeping the post up.
