Discussion: Idea for next years worlds in Vegas (or any other large tourney)

Sorry to start this.
Just wanted to throw out a suggestion
We just like playing teams that we have never played before
We play the same 3 teams every tournament and it is nice to play new teams
Brett
ps.. we never complain about the competition, we just like to play different teams

Just have all the team bid on game times
Use the money for the second ump on Friday and Sat
Brett
Hope you smiled at that one.

Dave
You misunderstood my suggestion.
Have half of the teams play in one group and the other half play in the second group
IE (40 teams)
20 teams in each group
A1 plays B20
B1 plays A20
A2 plays B19
B1 plays A19

You still play top vs bottom, but will NOT be a team you just played in the prelims

Just an idea.

SSUSA
Please divide each division into two groups for the preliminary games.
For the bracket games, take the seeds from one group and play seeds from the other group.
This will STOP teams from playing the same team they just played in the prelim in the first round of the bracket play.
We had to, and I saw other teams that had to.
This is not fun (win or lose)
We all like to play different teams.
It is an easy fix.
Please take this into consideration
Thanks
Brett

Discussion: Player Rating

Dave
This may be the rule, but...
No player should be penalized when they can still play in a lower age group.
If he is 60 and has a AAA rating on his 55 team, he should be able to play on his 60 AA team with no restrictions. (one of the 3 upper rating players)
The rule needs to be changed to let older players still play with the younger guys with no penalty.
Just my 2 cents
Brett

ps.. I think if a player plays down 2 age groups, he ought to have NO restrictions
Good for them to be able to play.

Discussion: practice tourney in B'ham on Aug 10th.. need a few teams

Steve
We got 3 teams and will play each team twice (4 games)
TN Connection, Darrell Harris, Atlanta Recycling
No prizes, no arguments (hopefully) just a good day of softball for practice in a game situation. (one field, one ump)
I don't think any one on our team is staying the night.
4 hours there, play 4 games, 4 hours home
Much better than working.

Discussion: practice tourney in B'ham on Aug 10th.. need a few teams

Darrell Harris and TN Connection are trying to get 5 teams together and play 4 games on Aug 10th in B'ham Al
All on Sat, Aug 10th

We are 55 AAA, but will take any teams that want to play (50-55-60, mixed)
Entry fee will be the cost of fields and umps, probable around $200-$225

No rosters, no associations, we just want to have a place to play since there are no tournaments around this time in this area. Hit your own balls.

Call if you want in, only taking 5 teams

Darrell Harris
404-645-8716

We need 2 more teams to go along with:

TN Connection (55 AAA)
Darrell Harris (55 AAA)
Atlanta Recycling (60 major)

Discussion: What's your call on a bang-bang play at a base?

Hey B.J.
Just a little advice on your clinics
If you have a crafty first baseman, he will pound his glove before the ball gets there so make the ump "hear" the ball going into his glove.
Doesn't happen much, but have seen and heard it many times over the years. (and have done it myself a few times..lol)

Just something to teach in your clinics that your new umps need to be aware of.
Just my 2 cents

ps.. selling the call is a great thing to teach also..

You are usually right, but I think you are wrong in this situation
(correct me if you disagree)
I don't think it is the umps job to call the CR out when he is an illegal CR UNLESS the defensive team asks for it.
If the defensive team does not bring up the illegal CR, play should go on.
It would be the same thing as an ump telling a batter he is batting out of order (not the umps job) and the ump should not interfere in something that helps/hinders a team.
Just my opinion

But you still can come to Vegas and keep score for us

Discussion: Bat bag frames

I bought mine from batshelf.com
I had to modify it a little to get my shin guards to fit
(made the lower section taller)
You can make one out of PVC, but it was worth the extra money to have it already built and made for my bag.
(the modification only cost me a couple of dollars)
Only negative is that it makes your bag a little heavier
Just my 2 cents

Discussion: what fields? for Vegas

Dave
I am going to prescribe CHILL pills to be given out at the Worlds this year.
People need to remember that a bad day of softball is always better than a good day of work

I do have a serious question...

Do you have any of the 2018 Masters hats left from last year?
I need another grey one (ruined mine last week)
Let me know

Discussion: What Calls Can Be Questioned and Reviewed by Tournament Director

Hey Dave
I reread the original post
In my opinion, that post is referring to a judgement call.

"Our situation was a fair call on a ball hit down the 3rd baseline that hit the ground past 3rd base On or Near the chalk line on the foul side. At the time of the hit, it was called fair and 2 runners scored and the batter got a triple. At this point, if the ball was actually fair or foul is irrelevant. The Manager asked for a Rule review by the TD. I believe that a Fair/Foul call is a Judgement call and should not be allowed to be reviewed by the TD or changed once made weather right or wrong. The umpire felt that the call was wrong and told that to the TD and the TD overturned the Fair call and reset the game to No Pitch

fair/foul ball is a judgement call. maybe I am reading it wrong. It was not a rules question, it doesn't say if it was really fair or foul.(on or near the chalk line on the foul side) This sentence makes me think its a judgement call..

I might just be reading too much into it.
\Either way, always good to bicker with you
coop3636

ps.. it doesn't really tell you which umpire told the TD it was a bad call..lol

Dave
I have a question... or statement
A judgment call cannot (should not) be overturned UNLESS the other umpire is asked for help by the 1st umpire that made the call.. The team CANNOT ASK FOR HELP. (on a tag, dropped ball. etc)
On a fair or foul ball that is called wrong, I cannot see anyway (even if the ump said she made a mistake) being overturned by a TD, or even by the umpire. that's like changing a strike/ball call.
Just my 2 cents worth.

also, teach umps that when you make a call like that, stay with your call. Even if you have to just say" I missed it, but it can't be changed")

I umped for many years and have said that more than once. It usually makes the situation tolerable, not right but tolerable.
Every ump makes mistakes, you just have to live with bad judgement calls.
Book rules, on the other hand, I will fight to the end of time if I think I'm right.
