This happened between Rabbit's team (Indiana Classics & Monster Softball @ the NSA Tourney). The ruling had nothing to do with the outcome; this is just a question that could occur with any association.

I put this question on the SPA website & got my HAND spanked cause it was not an SPA question; so here goes.

What is the SSWC, ASA, NSA, ISA or whomever ruling on this play?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scenario:
....RH batter is at the plate

....Pitch is delivered & hits the front of the plate bouncing up into the air

.....At the same movement of the ball bouncing into the air, the ump calls strike

.....At the same movement of the ball bouncing into the air & at the same time that the ump calls strike, the batter hits the ball weakly as a sign of disgust or whatever, the balls rolls out just a short ways fair (as I remember).

.....Batter does not run, pitcher throws another pitch.

I talked with the NSA ump later & told him that I thought the catcher could have picked up the ball & thrown him out cause he hit the ball.

Ump stated: NO, the ball hit the ground & would be ruled dead????????

What is the correct call?

This is just a question of interest, remember, it had NOTHING to do with the outcome of the game.

I'm not sure where it's at in the rule books of all associations but as an umpire for almost 45 years and a player a pitched ball that hits the ground becomes a dead ball as soon as it hits or touches the ground.

In Southern California, any ball hit after it touches the ground is an automatic out.

Hitman: does this apply to the Senior Division, since the plate is part of the strike zone? What associations do & did you ump?

DMAC: what associaitons are you referring to?

John: SCMAF, but to be honest I am not sure about UTrip. They have the rule as a safety precaution, supposedly to protect the catcher.

The SSUSA, ASA and SPA rule books all say a legally pitched ball that hits the plate cannot be legally hit and the effect is a "Dead Ball"

I remember seeing a video clip of Ichiro
when he was in Japan playing and hit a ball that bounced in front of the plate before it got to him into right field for a single.
So, we know it's OK in baseball but I don't know about softball.
For me, the batter should be allowed to swing at anything
he wants and I never saw a pitch
I didn't want to swing at.

Tater50, i play and ump in Sacramento, Ca and when the ball his the plate or ground it is a dead ball. From my experience it is the same in ASA, USSSA, and NSA. I have never seen anyone hit a bounced ball. But, if I see it in a game i am umping, i will call the player out and eject him for Safety reasons. You just do not do that.

Thanks to all for the comments: this is something that I had never observed before, so it is good to get some specifics in case this occurs again.
