What if each team had to provide 4 bats, to be presented at the start of each game, to the umpire(s) say a 27,8,9, 30. Those bats are marked or tagged, and then alteternatingly, each team had the option of using their own bat of a weight, or using the opponent's bat for the entire game. Would you shave your bat to have your opponent decide to use it? Would you "dumb it down"? to have to use it yourself? Maybe a little forced honesty. Or it is really not a problem?
As for balls the Trump Stote, "ROCK" 375, .44 with the micro cell cover, is the best I ever played with. Travels, but is "soft" to touch and much more friendly if you happen to get hit with it.

I don't think exchanging bats is a good idea. Who is going to pay for the bat supplied by team "A" when someone off team "B" breaks it or vice versa? Now if SSUSA or whatever sanction wants to supply the bats then it might work. The other problem is some players like their bats to have tapered handle knobs, tape, stickum etc. This would only slow the game down or create undo complaining. Look what happened when a pitcher recently pushed the envelope on illegal deception in delivery of pitches. I don't believe bat cheating in senior softball is a huge issue. I have only heard a moducum of people playing the game, suspect it even happens. It does not merit any special rules in my opinion.
As far as a softer ball, if you get hit with a ball no matter what the applied perception of hardness is (current ball standards), you are not going to experience any less pain from one verses the other, it is going to smart one way or the other.

having the other team sharing their bats prolly not gonna work like olie says.now if ssusa would that might, but then again you have the special quirks guys like for their handles,i personally take the grip off and use just tape, and like a little stick-um on the handle,oh also use a knob-cuff.so you'll have a bunch of prols sharing bats...........

the ultra is a shaved bat itself. it's illegal to use in other softball organizations (USSSA, ASA, etc.) with the stote softballs used in tournaments, a shaved bat really isn't going to help much. balls are too soft to have any major effect on the distance the ball travels. these balls have a plastic type cover and in the heat seam to wrap around the bat when hit.
