July 2, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: just wondering the rule Dugout, just a bit of advise. Most teams coaches keep a ball with them in the coaches box, if something doesn't sound right or ball gets dirty or wet or HR, he usually exchanges good ball or new ball with the pitcher. Standing joke is "we just got it out of the cooler" So, I guess like Dave said lesson learn. MQ |
May 17, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Change in the batters box rule Dave I also like the one that hits the front of the plate, but the one that hits the far corner is my favorite. stay well. |
May 17, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Change in the batters box rule Dave, I never said or intended to say the plate has moved. I have only been playing senior ball for 13 years. before I played with the young guys, they did not have a mat, it was up to the umpires to determine where the ball landed and if it was a strike. My statement is, that if a ball hits the plate, it was a ball back then, today in senior ball and a lot of other sanctions the mat and the plate are a strike. So technically, the so call strike area has moved up, therefore a batter has to move up to cover that area. So by taking a large strive forward the batter can unintentionally step over the box. I just think who ever came up with the mat system (which I like "stops a lot of arguments") never took into account the added distance and adjusted the box. MQ |
May 16, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Change in the batters box rule Dave, I understand your point when it come to MLB. But i disagree with you in softball, now that we use the mat. When softball started there was no such thing as the mat (correct) OK. now that the mat is used, correct me if I am wrong (I have been wrong before " ask my wife")the plate is a strike. Prior to the use of the mat the plate was a ball (again correct me if I am wrong) so this means the strike zone moved, again correct me if I am wrong, therefore the box should have moved with the start of using the mat. Make sense? Thank You, hope yo and your are well. MQ |
May 16, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Change in the batters box rule This rule should be amended because of the use of the mat and plate which extends the strike zone. When the rule of stepping out of the box where written, the plate was not a strike. Now that the plate is a strike we have to move up to cover that area or reach forward to hit the ball, the area that is the plate in the distance the box should be moved up or amend the rule. The stepping out comes into play especially in turf fields where the lines are painted (with old dimensions based on old softball rules) and do not take into consideration that the plate is now a strike.(new rules) SSUSA should address this, and come to the necessary action to eliminate this bad call being made at tournaments that use turf fields. |
May 3, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: coming to a complete stop Question for staff and all. As per rule 6.4 (C) pitcher must come to a complete stop before delivering the ball. Understood, the call should be no pitch and if batter swings the count remains the same. Correct? Ok, how many times can a pitcher do this, and when and if are there any consequences for his actions? thank you. |

March 31, 2021 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Intentional walk used to nulify a dominate hitter. in south Florida we have a league that if a batter weather intentionally or not walks once in the game, the batter has the option to restart the count if he is walked on the next at bat. That is league play. If this a tournament team it's called getting protection ( another power hitter) to hit behind. |

Nov. 16, 2020 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Infield fly rule...... in our case the umpire and TD decided because the sun was in the eyes of the SS that makes a difference. Yeah OK |
Nov. 16, 2020 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Infield fly rule...... what, before the next play, are you kidding me, this can never happen.I hope you never umpire a game in which I am playing B.J. Yes if the fielder breaks and can camp under the ball in the out field it can be a fly rule. But in this case the ball never left the clay. |
Nov. 16, 2020 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Infield fly rule...... here is the rule according SSUSA. A fair fly ball (not including a line drive) that can be caught by any fielder with ordinary effort when first and second bases or first, second and third bases are occupied with less than two outs. Any fielder can catch an infield fly. NOTE: When it becomes apparent that a batted ball will be an infield fly, the umpire shall immediately declare, "infield fly - batter is out", to aid the runners. If the ball is near the foul lines, the umpire shall declare, "infield fly - if fair". The ball is live and runners may advance at the risk of the ball being caught, or re-touch and advance after a fielder touches the ball. If the hit ball becomes a foul ball, it is treated the same as any other foul ball. Failure of the umpire to call "infield fly," does not negate the infield fly. If the error is discovered prior to the next pitch, the infield fly rule may still be called. where does it say anything about if a player is blinded by the sun or falls down and other such actions. this is a call base on the trajectory of the ball, PERIOD. once determined its not leaving the infield. |
Nov. 16, 2020 grayhitter59 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Infield fly rule...... a fair fly ball (not including a line drive or a bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second, and third bases are occupied before two are out. Question is, when is the determination made. 1) when the ball is hit in the air 2) when the infielder camps under it 3) when ever the umpire fells like it. As an umpire as soon as the ball goes up and is determined that it's not going to leave the infield, I believe the call should be made. This rule is to protect the runners. |
