| May 19, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Teams looking for players Discussion: Playing in Kentucky Chuck I run a 50 team in Louisville and the only senior teams and leagues I know of in Kentucky are located in Louisville and Northern Kentucky, It looks like Salem, Ky. is in far western Kentucky where you will be lucky to have any softball. |
| May 3, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Bats Discussion: New SSUSA Bat Policy I think the use of the U2 was a little higher than 50/50 but still that is not good for softball when over 50% of the players use the same bat. I have seen many good players use the U2 and have trouble going back to a regular bat. This is just my opinion so all you U2 swingers don't start hitting up the middle at me. |
| May 2, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Indy Tournament Nancy, I know you try and make a fair tournament but I know Tim runs the field like a business and get as many games as possible when he can use the fields. I just don't like the rule changes but on the other hand Tim runs a good organized tournament with excellent field conditions even in bad weather and used good balls 44 core 525 compression. I don't like one umpire but these were excellent umpires and consistent in their calls. Maybe in the future we can get Tim to give a little on some things like the 70' bases and 1-1 count with no extra foul. Also the flip flop rule was intended for blow out games not one or two run games like we used this weekend. I am not complaining as much as I am pointing out these differences. A lot of our tournaments are based on being close to home rather than how they are played. |
| May 2, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Indy Tournament Just a word on the Indy Tournament this past weekend. Although the tournament was well run I object to the disregard for senior rules. This is a SSUSA sanctioned tournament that used every rule they could to speed the game up or increase profits. It starts with the $2.00 admission at the gate then you find out you have only one umpire and no scorekeeper. The count we used was 1-1 with no extra foul. The umpires in SSUSA are supposed to call illegal for a pitch too high or too flat. These umpires refused to do that. Next we find out the pitchers rubber is 53 ft. with no box. Next we find out the bases are 70' for all ages. Then we learn there is only a fifty min. time limit to finish the inning and play one more. And finally we found out about the flip flop rule to keep the visiting team that is winning from batting the last inning if they are ahead. Each of these items are not much by themselves but when you put all of them together it looks a little like we are getting the shaft. Maybe next year we can add in a flip to see who wins and don't even bother to show up. I thought the reason we have a rule book was make the game the same all across the country. This should not be a sanction SSUSA tournament if it is going to be run in this manner. |
| April 29, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Bats Discussion: New SSUSA Bat Policy I am a place hitter. I own an UltraII that I use when I play in prisons and it is about broke. I object to having spend $300 for a bat and having it break after 2 or 3 hundred swings. Right now I use a Catalyst that has 2500 swings on it and has not broke including 600 on a 40 degree day. All I want is a good bat that will last. Bat companies do not want durable bats. They want you to buy new bats every chance you can. |

I will not play in any world tournament that has an illegal bat being used. There is no way the Ultra II can legally pass the 1.20 BPF. |

This is is my fourth year in senior softball and every year up until this year there have been prelimenary ratings that came out in Feb. These ratings took into account all the teams that finished first or second in a world tournament. Why they didn't do that this year I don't know. Again I think that team managers should rate every team they see or play in the qualifiers. I have started doing this and sending my opinion to the members of the rating committee. Terry's office called and thanked me for my opinion and expressed that this was a good idea. I plan to continue for all the qualifiers we play in and I hope other managers do the same. As far as re rating teams I don't think any team that won a world tournament should be allowed to drop down to the same division at any time during the next season. The only way to keep teams in the upper divisions is to have mandatory and keep them up there. We have only played in six world tournaments but I know that in at least three of those tournaments the winning team had been dropped from the an upper division during the year. We need to attempt to classify players because I also see lots of players bouncing around from team to team so they can play in the same classification all the time. After winning a world tournament a player should have to move up to the next division for at least one year. |

| March 29, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Bat doctors retirements? I don't think this will stop the practice of altering bats. One of the biggest problem with the painted bats is companies like Miken that use the same design for Velocite, Freaks, Freak+ and Ultra ll. It's a lot eaiser to paint an Ultra ll to look like a Freak if every thing else on the bats are the same. If Miken wanted to stop this they wold change the end caps or the knobs so it would be harder to just paint a bat. I think that Miken just wants to sell more Ultra ll bats and do not care about the integrity of the game. |
| March 29, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Associations Discussion: WHAT R U TRYING to do LVSSA? I have palyed in Plano and other SPA Tournaments and have never heard or seen the batter's circle. The rule book calls for a 3' X 7' batters box. I agree the mat should be wider but also the batters box should be longer in front of the plate. In order to hit a short pitch on the front of the plate it requires a batter to be standing or running further in front of the plate in order to catch the ball higher. |
| March 21, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Montgomery tournament Great tournament in Montgomery at one of the nicest complexs I,ve been to. Using 47 core 525 balls in the cool weather made for some high scores in the gold division. Congrats to Miken/Old South in the gold and Southern Belle in the Silver. Both teams were good experienced tournament teams that were able to perform when it counted. Our team was just happy to be able to play so early in the year. We get to stay close to home the next three tournaments at Indianapolis, Louisville, and Columbus, In. |

The open team I play with when I,m not playing senior ball has played 70' bases the last couple of years and using those results verses the 65' bases I,ve foud that the scoring decreases by about a third. There were more double plays and less extra base hits. I think it would have the same affect on senior ball. Personally i don't like it I enjoy scores in the 15 to 20 range per team per game and I think this would make it tough to get double figures. |

| March 2, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: SSWC balls I see in the SSWC rules the only ball they will use is the 44 core 375 compression. The best 44 core 375 compression ball when new is at best a poor ball. Most tournament directors will supply one new ball per game and when that is gone they will throw in a used ball that will be a sock. Most Tournament directors will not buy the best 44 core ball but will buy the cheapest. It is better to hit a good ball than a good bat. |

| March 1, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Pitching Most umpires don't have a clue how high 12 feet is. I umpire a lot and when someone told me I didn't know how high 12 feet was I decided to check it out. I went to a gym and got on the side of the basket and stoof 25 feet from the rim. I tried to pitch softballs over the rim and I was surprised to see how high 10 feet was much less 12 feet. In open ball there are very few pitchers who use the high pitch. It's used by mainly the old school players in senior ball. |
| March 1, 2005 stig 52 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Catalyst bat Our team had practice on Sunday and we hit the Catalyst bat. The bat was a 26 oz that had over a thousand swings on it. We put 800 swings with eleven guys using it. We used 44 core 525 lb Decker Shark balls with a wet outfield. Everybody was impressed with the performance of the bat and the durability. This bat is as good or better than any of the composite bats that are legal and if they all are as durable as the one we hit then this could be what softball players want a hot durable bat that won't dent or break after a few hundred swings. We are looking forward to using them in game situations to see if they can perform. |
