Stick - Over-running 2&3 isn't working in our 50+ league. While the intent is for safety's sake the result is not. When a runner must go to the base (Sliding or not) - at least both he and the fielder know where he's going to go. Over-running puts them both in jeopardy of collision, and I've seen some hard one's with no malice intended - just indecision or lack of control.
Our fields are turf with no dirt (skin) on the infield anywhere except home plate so sliding also is a problem - not illegal - just bloody. Tags are required without a forceout in effect.
We are trying to get this changed.

Jon - just ask the man if he thought it was already cracked but be prepared to buy him a new one (about 180). I use the U2Maxload red and I break them. First they crack and the are still hot until the crack breaks. They spiderweb a bit before the crack but its such a good senior bat that I don't care. (My next one is somewhere in UPSland as we speak.)
They break easy but don't sweat the small stuff - offer to buy it and he should offer to split it.
Good luck this year.

Discussion: Safety Glasses Work

We get alot of bad hops at rocket speed in this game. In tournament racquetball, it always the mishit shot that hits you from a wierd angle that you can't react to. A significant amount of eye injuries are now being prevented using safety eye glasses/guards. Please consider this a reminder.
Armor up. Play hard.

Who decided that softball is a non-contact sport? Just as a good, clean, hard slide (no malice intended) is a significant offensive tool - the skill required to throw out, catch, and tag the runner is necessary and decisive.
This ain't co-ed rec ball. We play it because its as close to the "real" thing as we can get. Please don't water these plays down. (I caught hardball into my 50s, I miss the plays at home plate.)

Ha! The dome we practice in never gets to 60. Most mornings you can see your breath but most of us still wear shorts. The TOC in Florida will still be a treat for many of us from the N.E. Good luck to all - arrive safely - play hard.

Hope you boys from the Middle Atlantic Conference all make it out OK. Way up here in Northwestern NY we're ready to play the TOC - but I guess we don't get as much snow as you anymore...

Discussion: Flared or cone knob ???

#6 and guys - Thanks. I was made to take a single layer of tape off my bat during a tourney game (in Canada) and it ruined the underlying grip beneath for the rest of the weekend.
I will try this cone at the cages - I drop 1 finger now and would like it even higher.

Discussion: Masks or Helmets

Nobody wants a pitcher to get hurt and it's not "unmanly" to choose to use personal protection devices - just a preference. I would like to see our pitchers use something - our team would buy it for them - but ultimately, it's their choice.
Without turning this excellent thread into an advertisement - can someone give us an example of what would be considered "acceptable headgear" under this rule?
I'd really like our pitchers to consider it.
Thanks.

Is it illegal to have more than 2 layers of tape but not illegal to use things like these?? I'm not against either but this seems inconsistant to me.

Yeah. It's like the game of "RISK" where you can only re-inforce with an army from a touching province.

Ceres-nope-play 3B and joke was meant for me and my teammates- we still have fun and don't need anybody hurt. Was hit in the cheekbone with a bad hop earlier this year but got my smile back when SS told me - could have been worse - you could have pooped your pants. Called me chknsht and told me to OLE' the next high bounce.
E4 - chill out - or FO - it's not always about you.

Discussion: Cut-off

Defensively, there are OFs with rocket arms and OFs with less. Mikens/etc. make us play deep so hitting cutoffs going home is usually preferred but direct to 2nd and 3rd are usually required in AAA and Major. Throwing out runners is still fun.
Offensively, if you're not sure about the arms in their outfield, there's only one way to find out. Just don't wait for the most critical runner of the game to do it.
Beating a tag is still fun, too.

SNO195 if you are NJHitmen55, we played some fun games AAA in CapeMay. I play OF & live in NY. Many of my buds are going down to play 60's but I'm 57. LF/3B/RCF and would want to be released back to my team after this tourney. I'm sure Homer will be there, too.

Discussion: pitcher protection rule new definition

Curty- your pitcher Harvey is the antidote to the PPR rule. He should run a clinic. The way he plays "D" he wants you to hit towards him and he'll get you out if you do.
He pitches from deep behind the rubber. He mixes his pitches. He let's the middle infielders play more towards their holes and he covers 2nd & 1st.
We had a great time playing with you guys - fun venue. Your Baystate Bombers are all class acts and very good players.
