Discussion: Hit today a 275 by 52 ball

hello all ... Last night was the first night of our local open league useing 52 300 ASA ball it was a dudley ....in 4 games we had 1st was a rec game no tourney players niether team had a composite bat and the best bat they had was a b52 dem. .... one of the smallest players out there hit it out for his first home run of his life ... the next 3 games were compitive open with all kinds of young kids tourney players with all kinds of composite bats ASA stamped it you know what I mean... they would swing as hard as they could none going out ... it was getting to those guys then they relised what they were hiting ... when did we change to these balls .... they were upset that they didn't bring there metal bats ... the last game was with a team that hit 2 out with composite bats but the swing was so much different from the others it was slow smooth compared to fast and jerky ... reminded me of and old tenn. thumper swing end loaded .... just letting you know from what I saw .... the ball held up pretty good till you got into the second game then they started down ... we used 1 new ball per game then used the ball from the game before if it was foul or out of the park...

so what I got out of it was the old and "slow and go" swing got a better pop then the "bat speed" swing with composite bats...

einstein I not trying to be rude so please don't take that way ... can you test these new balls your talking about with metal bats if you still have any?

thanks for reading

Discussion: Dalton, Ga.SPA Worlds

DON'T TAKE THIS AS THE WAY IT WILL BE ..... I'm thinking you have never been to a SPA national here in Dalton? ...
the first week and second week there expecting 40-60 teams each weekend

first weekend 55aa 55aaa 65aa 65aaa 65majors 65major+
75aa 75aaa 75majors 75major+

second weekend 50aa 50aaa 60aa 60aaa 70aa 70aaa 70major
70major+ 80s

The Thursday night doesn't go to late in the evening because they have an opening night special events games, intro of the teams, all star games and IceCream social....

I just looked at there site and they did start playing at 10am on thursday last year. Alot of the teams dont want to play to late in the evening with the heat and humid condtions and the way the sun sets at this complex does make it tough some of the fields....

Hope this helps

Discussion: Just what is the call?

Not saying this is by any way what ssusa would like to be called ... but this is how I would handle it ... the line up given to the umpire is offical ... if and when the "?" comes up if the next pitch is not made there is an out for that time the game continues from the point with the line up the umpire has, all runs up to that point count ... if the player in "?" is subed for and the next pitch is made that runner is still in the game and counts if he scores or gets put out. The key is you make the line up right from that point on .... CLEAR AS MUD ?

looking at the comments here I've noticed somthing asa usssa are mentioned the most .... SSUSA and ISA are in bed together most of your umpires you are gona get will come from ISA will they not ..... remmeber the GREEN shirts BLACK hats well there limits are 4 off the ground to 10 off the ground and alot of pitchers releasing 6 iniches off the ground to a foot so yes you can get one there grant it , it will be alittle hot coming in but if there use to calling the younger guys all week and on the weekends, a tourney for the seniors every blue moon your gona get the lower calls ... just my take on it from doing some senior tourneys where they brought in some locals that had not done much seniors but had reg. league ball and tourneys in the area that were ISA.

Discussion: tournaments for league bats only

BRIAN WROTE :
What about AA being required to use ASA bats. AAA required to use U-trip bats. And Major & Major Plus use the bats we use now? So if you believe that the game has become a homerun derby. You drop down to level you feel safe playing.

GREAT IDEA IT MAYBE HARDER TO GET PAST THE RULES MAKERS .. AFTER ALL THERE ARE ALOT OF PLAYERS IN THE MIDDLE THYAT HAVE THE SENIOR BATS THAT HAVE PAID BIG BUCKS TO GET THEM TO SHELVE THEM .. MAYBE A 2 YEAR PROGRAM TO GET READY FOR IT SO THEY CAN SELL THEM TO MAJOR PLAYERS OR GET THERE USE OUT OF THEM ..

BRUCE LET ME TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER, AND FOR YOU THAT DON'T KNOW BRUCE AND I HAVE BEEN TEAMATES AND IVE UMPIRED BOTH LEAGUES WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT. WE HAVE ALOT OF RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER.

1. WHEN YOU DO ANYTHING WITH A BALL OR BAT THERE IS ABOUT A 15-20 FOOT DIFFERENCE IN THE DISTANCE OF THE BALL
EXAMPLE 50CORE TO 47CORE , 47CORE TO 44CORE , ASA BATS TO USSSA BATS , USSSA BATS TO SENIOR BATS .

2. FENCES AT HOBGOOD ARE 300 AT TOLLESON ARE 285 SO THERES YOUR FIRST 15-20 FOOT DIFERENCE "SO HOTTER BATS ARE NOT NEED" AT TOLL. AND I KNOW THE TEAM YOUR TALKING ABOUT DOWN THERE BUT MAULLERS HIT JUST AS MANY AS THEY DO AND A NUMBER OF THEM USE THE SAME BAT THRU THERE LINEUP AS WELL.

3. OUR GAMES DOWN THERE WERE RUNNING 1HOUR 15 MINS TO 1HOUR 30 MINS AND GAMES ARE BASED TIME WISE ON 1 HOUR SO BY THE TIME YOU GOT TO THE END OF THE NIGHT PLAYERS WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW LONG IT WAS BEHIND.

4. CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG BUT YALL ONLY HAVE 3 GAMES ON THE NATIONAL FIELD ON TUESDAY WITH THE SENIORS BATS, ALL OTHER FIELDS USE ASA BATS SO HOW DO YOU GET 6 GAMES?

5. YOU MADE MENTION OF THE POSSIBLE SHAVED BATS DID NOT BECOME A FACTOR AT ALL. THE OLD HIT THE BOTTOM THIRD OF THE BALL AND IT WOULD SAIL OUT .... DIDNT HAPPEN POP OUTS YOU HAD TO HIT IT STRAIGHT ON TO GET A DEEP ONE.

SORRY IF THIS THREAD TOOK A LEFT TURN, WE NOW RETURN YOU TO LEAGUE BAT TOURNEYS

THIS KINDA BUT NOT REALLY IN THE SAME BALL PARK ... OUR LOCAL SENIOR LEAGUE HAS BEEN USING 44 375 BALLS ALL YEAR TILL THE PARK RUNS OUT OF THERE OLD STOCK ... OUR LEAGUE ALLOWS ASA BATS RULES WITH FREAK AND SYNERGY2 ALSO ...
WELL THE OLD STOCK OF BALLS RAN OUT AND WE SWITCHED TO THE 40 325 BALL LAST NIGHT THE 70S NEVER REALY NOTICED OR DIDN'T CARE ... THE 50S ON THE OTHER HAND TOOK A GAME TO FIGURE IT OUT... WE PLAY ON A 285FT. FIELD AND WITH THE THE OLD BALLS WE WOULD HAVE 10 - 15 HOMERS A NIGHT OVER A 3 GAMES ... WE HAD 1 ALL NIGHT WITH THE NEW BALL AND IT WAS THE WALK OFF BOTTOM OF THE 7TH OF THE LAST GAME ... AND BY THE WAY THEY WEREN'T SIZZZLING OVER HEAD ON THE WAY OUT OF THE INFIELD ... SO MY POINT IS EVEN IF THE GUYS STILL WANT A SENIOR BAT TO SWING ... LOWER THE CORE AND COMPRESSION AND YOU GOT YOUR SAFER GAME ... THE GAMES WERE LOWER SCORING AND WENT BY FASTER ... NOW THERE TALKING ABOUT ADDING THE SENIOR BATS NEXT YEAR ... IT BROUGHT BACK A REAL GAME NOT A HOMERUN DERBY

WHEN USING A MAT STRIKE ZONE .... THE BATTERS BOX IS 6 OR SO INCHES LONGER IN THE FRONT TO ALLOW THE BATTER TO PROTECT THE FRONT OF THE PLATE .... WIDTH IS THE SAME I BELIEVE

Discussion: Time Limits

1. 1 AND 1 WILL SPEED THE GAME UP
2. TAKING INFIELD BETWEEN INNINGS TAKES TOO MUCH TIME ... 60S 70S I DONT SEE IT AS MUCH WITH THE YOUNGSTERS
3. TDS WITH 1 1/2 HOUR TIME SLOTS FOR POOL WORKED OUT FINE FOR THE MAJOR MAJOR+ GAMES CAUSE THEY DONT TAKE INFIELD FOR THE MOST PART BTWEEN INNINGS. 2 HOUR TIME SLOTS FOR BRACKETS WORKED FINE MOST WERE VERY CLOSE TO START TIME.
4. I ONLY HAD 1 GAME CUT SHORT DO TO THE TIME LIMIT ON POOL PLAY OUT OF 2 DAYS OF SOLID POOL PLAY. COMPARE THAT TO THE AAA AA AND IT WILL BE A WHOLE DIDFFERENT GAME ... THERE SLOWER TO GET ON THE FIELD.
5. TAKE YOUR WARM UPS THROWS BEFORE THE TEAMS FINISH THE GAME BEFORE YOU ... I COULDNT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES TEAMS CAME UP 5 MINS BEFORE GAME TIME AND HADNT THREW THE BALL AND SAID WELL WE EXPECTED THE GAMES TO RUN LATE. MY GROUP OF UMPIRES ON MY FIELD WERE TOLD IF YOU FINISH EARLY AND BOTH TEAMS ARE THERE AND THEY WANT TO START THEN START. IT ONLY HELPS KEEP THE FIELDS ON TIME. BUT NEVER FORCE A TEAM TO START BEFORE GAME TIME.

SO BOTTOM LINE FOR ME
1. HIT AND SET FOR HR AND 4 BASE ERRORS
2. NO INFIELD AFTER 1ST INNING
3. RUN ON AND OFF FIELDS
4. TDS SET TIMES FOR GAMES THAT ARE DOABLE
5. ILL DO MY PART AND NOT LEAVE FIELD IF I CAN HELP IT TO MOVE IT ALONG

THANKS JESSE

REMMEBER THE BOX IS LONGER ON THE FRONT END BY 6 INCHES OR SO .... A HEAVY TRUCK MUD FLAP WORKS REAL WELL BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MOVE AS MUCH WHEN THE BALL HITS THE PLATES FRONT EDGE .... REMIND THE UMPS. 6-12 THEN HITS THE MAT ... MOST NEW UMPIRES GET WORRIED ABOUT THE MAT AND FOR GET THE 6-12 COMES FIRST

GOOD LUCK

What a good tourney ... lots of close games coming down to the end ... I had the 55M on Sunday BUCS congrats a tough first game with your loser bracket final ... Texas bats just went cold in the CHAMP and got beat ... the if game was a pitchers duel till the 5th or 6th when BUCS started to hit and run ruled Texas in the 6th ... lots of close games on Sat. as well in the 50M that I had on field 3 ... Joe Einstein you were playing when we left so I didn't want to disturb you as you were playing was good to see you were there on Sunday ... Good luck to all in the rest of your tourneys this year

Discussion: Hitting the ball with a foot completely out of the battyer"s box.

THE PLAYER IS RIGHT

7.6 BATTER IS OUT
C. WHEN AN ENTIRE FOOT IS TOUCHING THE GROUND COMPLETELY OUTSIDE THE LINES OF THE BATTER'S BOX WHEN HE HITS A BALL FAIR OR FOUL.

THIS IS TRUE IN ALL ASSC. THAT I KNOW OF .... KEEP IN MIND THAT SENIOR BATTER BOXES ARE 6 INCH FURTHER OUT THE FRONT THEN NORMAL BATTER BOXES .... THIS GIVES THEM THE ROOM TO PROTECT THE FRONT EDGE OF THE PLATE SINCE STRIKES ARE COUNTED HITTING THERE .... ITS A GIVEN THAT AFTER THE FIRST COUPLE OF INNINGS THE LINES ARE GONE UP THERE SO BE DANG SURE IF YOU WANT TO PICK THAT POINT TO CALL AN OUT ..... CAUSE IF YOUR LEAGUE BALL IS LIKE OURS .... MOST PLAYERS ARE TOURNEY PLAYERS AND I HATE TO SAY IT BUT YOU COULD BE CALLING ALOT OF OUTS .... I TELL MY TEAMS ITS REC LEAGUE AND WHEN YOU STEP ON THE FIELD OF TOURNEY IT WILL BE CALLED FOR SURE .... IVE OUNLY HAD TO CALL 2 GUYS IN 5 YEARS DOING SENIORS OUT FOR THAT BY DOING SOME PREVENTIVE UMPIREING .... IF YOU KNOW YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT GETS CLOSE CATCH HIM ON THE WAY BACK INTO THE DOUGOUT HEAD DOWN TELL HIM HES PUSHING IT IN THE FRONT AND A LITTLE REMINDER AS HES GETTING IN THE BOX WORKS FROM THAT POINT ON .....

GOOD LUCK

EVERYONE GOT 5 GAMES MIN. IN TWO DAYS AND SOME GOT MORE IN THE LOSERS BRACKET FROM WHAT I COULD SEE .... ON FRIDAY ALOT OF THE TEAMS AS THEY GOT IN LOSERS BRACKET WERE PLAYING WITH 1 HOUR REST .... WITH ALOT OF SENIOR TEAMS NOT WANTING TO PLAY BACK TO BACK MANILY IN THE WINNERS BRACKET I WOULD THINK THAT WAS WHY THE LOWER FIELDS WERE NOT USED ..... MY OPINION ..... I DONT SPEAK FOR SPA AND NEVER WILL .... ALOT OF THINGS HAVE TO COME INTO PLAY GROUNDS CREW , UMIPERS , TOURNEY STAFF , SCORE KEEPERS , AND THE WISHES OF THE TEAMS NOT TO PLAY BACK TO BACK .... THEN THERE WAS THE RAIN AND YOU JUST CANT COUNT THAT AS RIDGES FAULT .... AFTER SAT MORNINGS RAINS AND THE RADAR SHOWING SO MUCH MORE COMING RIDGE HAD A LOT ON HIS MIND .... I HAD HERD SOME EST. THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN 7:00 PM SUN BEFORE THEY WOULD HAVE GOT FINISHED AND THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO LATE FOR THE FLYING TEAMS TO MAKE LAST MIN. FLIGHT CHANGES .... IM SURE RIDGE HAD MEMORIES OF THE AND EARLIER DALTON THAT WE LOST ONE FULL DAY .... THIS YEAR WE LOST 1 1/2 DAYS AND STILL PLAYED GAMES AT 9:00 PM START TIME ON FRIDAY ..... GLAD TO SEE SO MANY TEAMS AND HOPE TO SEE YALL NEXT YEAR .....

Discussion: Lighter Bats vs Heavier Bats

Well I'm not a big fan of fiberglass bats, always used metal bats and have a slow swing and not a home run hitter base hit double kinda guy , so for me I swing a 34inch 30oz ssest worth(recertified) or a 34inch 29oz redline easton.

So I guess bottom line is what are you looking for and comfortable with for a swing. I've never hit a homer like to hit opposite field so i dont need alot of fire just lift it over the infield .

Hope this adds to the forum
