June 28, 2014 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | over throw at first. Had an interesting play yesterday in Salem Va. We had a runner on first and a pop fly to short right. Runner went half way but the SS made a good play and tried to get the runner at first. The runner was going back to the bag but the ball went into the dugout. We said he should get one plus one and be on third base. He was put on second. Would like some in put on the ruling. Thanks Harry |

June 28, 2014 TimMcElroy 942 posts | Hey Birdie- In Senior Softball-USA (SSUSA, and most other organizations (ASA, ISA, NSA) the runner in your scenario would be awarded 2 bases from the last base achieved (he had 1st, and now gets 2nd & 3rd). The rules in USSSA play would give the runner the base that he must retouch (1st) plus one additional base (2nd). You are playing in Salem, VA this weekend... That park plays host to a number of USSSA tournaments during the year. If the ISSA / ISF tournament is using "local" umpires this weekend, this could be the source of your confusion. Hope this helps- Tim |

Thx. in a previous post the awarding of bases was an issue...I was mistaken on answer saying runner only got 2nd....I know where it came from I used to ump USSSA several yrs ago. It would be nice for SSUSA to come out with a more thorough rule book with explanations on scenarios, much like ASA does |
