Sept. 11 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | In 2001 we were preparing to travel to the worlds in Las Vegas. Our flight was September 12. The terrorist attacks on our country changed that. For the next couple of days we kept running into our team mates at the parks around our airport just staring at parked planes. SSUSA gave those of us flying in the choice to either adjust schedules or to cancel. Our team met and decided that the terrorists were not going to take away our right to play, and we would not be ruled by fear. Our flight was one of the first ones into Las Vegas. I will never forget walking off that plane to see our friends, Country Bins. They had won their division, but they had been trapped there. There were so many hugs and tears of joy between our two teams in those moments. Coachie and I declared that FOG was Flying Old Glory for that week. We had a great tournament and came in third. Even out of the worst of times, our battles to get to the worlds and compete still make me very proud of us as Americans to not let evil take away our freedom to do what we love. If you are playing in the world championships this year, do not forget how fortunate we are to have the privileges that we do in our country that allow us to play this game we love. God bless America and senior softball. |

Sept. 11 Perl 212 posts | Very nice message. We should all be proud to be Americans and recognize the cost of freedom isn't measured by how many ships or jets we have it's the number of heroes willing to die for what we stand for. |
Sept. 11 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | This is really on my mind today. I don't think that I could express it any better than I did back then, so brought it back to the top. Also on my mind are my friends and the other players, directors, umpires, and others who were at the Worlds last year in Vegas during the mass shooting. Please live each day as potentially your last; hug those that you love, and embrace our freedoms. |
