Broken hand and wrist
Tried to post this before but it disappeared. I broke the 4th metacarpal and wrist on August 2 and cast is coming off on September 9th. Looking forward to playing in Va Beach on the first weekend of October but Dr is saying otherwise. I know he's the Dr but any past broken hands and wrists out here that can offer some advice. I play for the Promotion 60 and over out of NJ. I've gotten plenty of advice on diving into bags lol

For what is worth a few years ago I broke my left hand. When the cast came off the Dr also told me no softball for a few weeks but he knew I wouldn't listen to him so he gave me a wrap around brace for my hand and wrist to wear while playing. IMO it basically comes down to how you feel.

Mac, On the one hand (no pun intended) you say Dr says no and tried to post this but it disappeared - might have been an omen. On the other not really the answer you wanted to hear so you are looking for any reason to be hopeful to play in VA (as many of us would).

Since you seem to be leaning that way, I think Fred has it right. From the time you get the cast off until Va you will have 3 week to see if your wrist is well enough to field, hit, and throw. Other considerations, you don't want to do more damage in case you are considering going to Ft. Myers a month later for instance. And if your team has sufficient players rest might be your best option.

Glad to see you won't consider joining your team Sep 10 in Salisbury.
Good luck with the recovery and decision.

Mac33, most doctors tend to be prudent. Who wants a malpractice suit when the player says "doc said I could play but to be careful. I tried to carefully slide face first into second!".

That said, Fred has a good point. Many doctors don't want to inhibit the get-better attitude of a patient, so they might work with a patient.

In my case, I chose a general practitioner who is younger than me and also an athlete. When I asked if swinging a bat could aggravate my sciatica, he said "no, I'd rather have you active".

In a recent situation with a hernia repair, I was eager to make the next important tournament. The surgeon said "too soon." I asked him what damage could actually be done after the repair. He couldn't think of anything related to the hernia or the surgery, so he said "go ahead."

In any event, after my rotator cuff surgery a few years ago, I was shelved for quite a few weeks, but that didn't stop me from being a courtesy runner for my team. Sure there was a slight risk of a fall and a reinjury, but it didn't happen and I can tell you that my team loved having a fresh man off the bench to run when the temperature was nudging 95º. Maybe you can be a capable rabbit for your team even if your swing/throwing/batting is still affected.
