Equalizers
We have a 6-team Senior Co-Rec league with a lot of disparity between the teams.
We're looking for "equalizers" to make the games more competitive.
Anyone have any ideas beyond the standard 5-run spot?
Thanx for any suggestions . . .

do a draft of all players...divide them by age and ability for drafting......maybe 3 tier....."A" for tourney level...."B" for your good rec players.....and then "C" for beginners .....spread them out thru your teams.....i know most don't like the draft system....but it is the easiest way to even teams out......

thats what we need to do here we have six teams can play each other round robin instead of going out of town and playing the same teams some times majors and (AAA) because not enough teams.

DCPete ... First thought: mad dog has the best idea ... But if that doesn't work to even things out, or can't be invoked, here are a few of "out there" options we've either been asked about or have seen employed over the years ... A lot depends, obviously, on the seriousness of the league's competitive nature and/or the disparity of individual teams involved as to skill level and age ... They're fairly unconventional, but someone, somewhere, sometime thought they might work! ...

• Four outs per at-bat for team receiving the equalizer;
• "Int'l Tie Breaker" runner on 2nd base starting every inning for team receiving the equalizer; and
• Here's one WAY out there: For team receiving the BIG equalizer, they are BOTH the Home AND Visitor, getting one more offensive ½-inning at bat ...

Thanks Dave & MD; we like the Runner on 2nd base option since we want the underdog to have to earn their equalizer instead of just being gifted runs.
We do have some Draft leagues already but the Co-Rec Senior league has been ongoing for about 20 years and the players don't want to break up their teams.
Another idea might be to allow the underdog to score up to 7 runs per inning vs 5 runs for the higher level team.

DCPete, I have seen leagues here make the better team bat off handed (the opposite of the way that they normally bat). I did have a league situation once where a men's team from one diamond and a coed team from another diamond both had forfeits, and I offered to do a combined game for them (I think this is important when they pay $3 to get in the gate). The men's team was being gentle but was way too much for the coed team. So the coed team had 18 in their dugout. I asked the men's coach if he cared if all of them played the field. They all had fun, and you would not believe the number of double takes from players walking past the diamond. "What is going on?". So perhaps if you could allow the weak team an extra infielder and outfielder that might help too defensively.

Thanks Nancy; we already play with 11 fielders in this league but giving the underdog a 12th fielder as in a 5th outfielder could be a good equalizer.
Pretty sure we'd get very little support for batting off-handed, too many players have enough challenge hitting normally . . .
