At Reno we used the bigger plate/mat.
Very successful change.
Puts more pressure on the batters to swing
which makes the game faster, more interesting and safer
to appreciate and play .

The dead ball out at the pitcher rule
is still one or two beers short of a six pack.
I got hit at once with a direct shot.
Hit my glove than my chest and back in the glove
and the umpire called it out even before it finally settled in my glove.
I don't feel that it's enough of a deterrent if that's what you want to do.
There were a number of guys who seemed comfortable going through the middle
despite the "penalty".
Either make it more of a penalty, like ejection from the game, then suspension from the
tournament or just add some pitcher pluses like higher/lower arc, widen the rubber
to 6 feet, 1-1 count, in order to protect the pitchers and
who thought it was a great idea
to make home runs outs after 8 in both the 60's and 40's major plus.
As soon as the monsters we were playing against got boxed unable to hit the ball safely and far for singles or home runs
balls started whistling by and above me on the mound.
It's the home run out/single rule that mostly determines
how many balls get hit through the box.

I say, let long balls be home runs then singles
if you REALLY want to help protect pitchers
and not just act like you do.

Home runs then walks. Not singles.
That way is keeps the long ball in the game but also keeps the runner from moving unless forced.
For ALL ages & divisions.

Joe,
I agree about the out rule after the home run. Exposes the middle. Keep the middle rule and go to singles this would give the pitcher optimun protection.

Joe, total agreement that limiting the home runs in major plus wil result in more balls hit up the middle and hence at the pitcher. Major plus should be unlimited as a truly great hitter will say why hit it out and take one base for the on base runner when I can whistle the pitcher's head and score the runner from second.

If a compromise is needed then make a homerun a single but unlimited would be much safer.

Taits, I believe that in SSWC and ISA that all runners get the next base automatically (without being forced) but in SPA that they do not (must be forced).

Nancy Allen,
That is why I said a Walk.
Example; If runners were on 1st & 3rd, The person on 3rd could not get home on one over.
Not sure about what you said, (assn's) haven't had to worry about it where I am currently playing....

Taits, I am with you. I think that SPA is doing what you want but not the others, and I know that from some tournaments that I have been to that this has been a major sticking point because either a team or an umpire did not know the rule. Have fun.

I do not think SPA in is CA. Maybe some in the LA area use their rules but have not heard of an SPA tournament here. Same for ISA I think ISA used to be around years ago but another not well known.
Play well, Ump calls consistently.
