a very long read on low turnouts.
A quick idea for turning around the low tournament participation, within SSUSA only.
First off, there are Qualifiers that are also Championship tournaments, if this isn't wrong, I'm not sure what is. (My opinion.)
Sure, if you win, you can kill 2 birds with one stone, earn a birth to the TOC & the right to buy a ring, but is that right? If it is, why not then, only go to these? There are 6 listed this year. Leaving many weekends free to attend another event someplace else...??
I do not have the "zones" for other assns, but if they are the same, the better whole package offering should come out way ahead in this "numbers" game. That refers to some divisions having to play out of their own, either up or down as well as age bracket.
There are 8 zones according to the map on the tournament page. Within that there are 43 cities marked, two in TX are not marked. (so by my count, 45 cities)
Not taking into account any other assn here, why nor have only one or two qualifiers in each city at different times, alternating the zones from coast to coast, so if a teams want to travel they may be able to go to a neighboring city even if in another zone. That's still almost one every weekend as is. There is about twice that now.
Bottom line, lower the number of qualifiers. Have actual qualifiers and change the Championship venues so all areas can have a great field of participation, perhaps even too many.
If its National good, but is it really? Sure you want them to come, but will they?
Most are by Zone now, with a few others like the Rock N Reno thrown in for good measure.
They say if it isn't broke don't try to fix it, but though it may not be broke it need oiling. Change can be good.
The economy is probably the biggest factor, then there are the other rule factors that have their share of the blame game in all this, but is can't continue to go on as it is now, something will no doubt give way.
WD-40 anyone?
Not a cure all, just an idea.

A good post, and absolutely no disrespect toward you, but when I read about winning the right to buy a ring I just can't stop laughing.

You do not have to pay for a ring if you win the TOC.

Our team (cash4college) won in Phoenix
in October of 2008. We did not have to pay for the championship rings.
