Your kind attention and deepest regard are greatly needed and will be immensely appreciated. After perusing the article concerning the importance of positions on defense in softball, I had a Sputnik Moment!
As a result, I have arrived at the conclusion that there is indeed, a segment of the senior softball community is in greater peril than I could have ever realized. As a result, I have determined to form the SENIOR SOFTBALL WORLD OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED AND FORGOTTEN CATCHERS!
These men and women need to know that there are still coaches, managers, and others who still care. They need to know that they are not forgotten and that there is still hope. Rehabilitation is available! Plans are already underway for an encouraging, useful 3-step program which will enable them to move back into mainstream softball.

Please note: some tell-tale signs of a catcher on the brink.
1. a refusal to accept the last spot in the batting order.
2. a refusal to EH.
3. a lack of communication. (Warning: could simply be chewing tobacco--don't jump to conclusions)
There are other signs; perhaps others could share your insight here as well.PLEASE, SEND ALL DONATIONS TO SOUTHPAW ASAP!

Awwwww, c'mon! I used to be on a team with 9 catchers-they were everywhere. We didn't have much defense, but we could hit and score a lot of runs. We had catchers pitching, playing first, playing third, playing outfield. But we could hit! We thought about drawing circles with 10 foot radius in the outfield and if the ball was hit into it the batter was out! That was the range of some of these guys!

The preceding was fictional---anyone who thinks they were being, in any way, referred to---you are wrong and it is just a coincidence! :-)

Hey Webbie, of course, just having fun as well. It just seemed that a good intentioned query had some analysis that was a bit over the top. I just wondered to myself how all the catchers were feeling if they had read the entire article. Wondered if some would even want to go back and play.
I am by no means a very good coach and just an average player, however, I do love the game and take the competition as serious as anyone. But, winning before everything else that is good about senior softball just is not what does it for me. Team, friendships, mutual respect for our differences is much more important.

Steve: being a 1b/catcher & using a CR on occasion, this thread has hit too close to home.

I am going to start a website for ALL catcher/fat/slow/lazy SSBers so that we can have our own forum. Speedsters & non-catchers not allowed: would like for a therapist/catcher to join to help out. Want this type of therapist cause they know what we go thru; get laughed at by the Ump of all people; then we get trounced on on a national board.
I think this falls under degradation, demoralizing & I think Dave should look into this; amazed that this should go on; think the thread should be deleted!!! I am hurt to the core; will probably NEVER show up to play again!!!

ALL IN FUN GUYS!!! HAVE A GOOD LAUGH ON US CATCHERS; BUT REMEMBER, WE KEEP THAT UMP IN A GOOD MOOD.

PS for those interested, you can find our forum @ SSBTACFSLCR.CHUMS.OUTFIELDERWANNABEES.FOOD.SMORGASBORG.PASSTHECHICKEN: Senior Softballer That Are Catchers Fat Slow Lazy & need a Courtesy Runner!!!

John and all, I neglected to mention that for the first 11 contributors 2 really intriguing books on softball will be awarded. They were written by a very high profile senior softball impresario mystery writer. They are: "My way or the High Way" and "How to Win Friends and Influence Softball Players".

Went to a therapist: we had a 5 minute discussion about how I felt about my Mom & Dad; the only thing pertinent that I gave her was my name.
She ask; you know what logic is? I said had a decent clue. Here's what she said that she had deduced from our 5 minute talk.
*Your username in SSB is Tater50
*You are a catcher
*You are slow/lazy/fat & constantly need a courtesy runner
*You may not play any more ball since the thread started about how useless you are.
I ask how do you know all of that from a 5 minute talk. She said that's the reason she charges $150 an hour; told me to get my butt out cause she had 10 more SSB catchers waiting in the hallway cause they had been reading the same thread!!!

ALL IN FUN GUYS!!

Tater, does your therapist make house calls? Reason: my catcher will not leave his house now!

MadDog/Steve: No house calls, no medicaid!!

Steve: Many catchers have eeeeed me since the on board catcher dissection, about your tourney & the rest of 2011'.

Since I have had therapeutic psycho evaluations for this seemingly ongoing never ending problem; I plan to have a hippie type commune round table discussion to discuss the do's & don'ts!!

This way: you can save your $150 an hour fee; although my input will be a little watered down; at least it will be free!!

I will discuss this one thing that the therapist was very adamant about; now this is going to HURT, so take a seat:

She looked at me with those cold, I'm getting your money sucker eyes & said;
"OLD MAN; IT'S NOT GOING TO GET ANY BETTER; AS A MATTER OF A FACT, YOU WILL GET SLOWER!!

So, since there is NO light at the end of the catcher tunnel: somebody BRING a bucket of chicken for us fat/lazy/slow/CR catchers.

ALL IN FUN

one ,more time,if I was coaching a team of self proclaimed allstars,I would put all positions in a hat and draw them out and then put 1-11 in a hat and draw them out for batting order because all players are the same, just ask them.HAHAHA,all in gest

Tater-can I join your fat/slow/lazy club? The only reason I don't catch is that I cannot handle all the subtle nuances of the position. It is, without doubt, a thinking man's position that needs an innovative approach. My therapist (the-rapist) looks at me in wonder and says "What goes on in that head of yours? What is it like in there?"

Bring on the Chicken!!! I will have to get my tongue out of my cheek to eat it, though.

tater, are you going to TOC,if so we can meet an 1.5 hr before the banquet and have the round table discussion, getting us ready for the chow, mmmmm chow.hey maybe we could use this to have whor's dorvy's.....LOL....

tg69,been there done that, except with us the number you drew was also the position you played,so pitcher, catcher and so forth is how we batted.
did it with the kids once,as a bunch of us from the dallas area just met up to play in a benefit tourney and they asked me to do the batting order,so mi said you bat per your position order(as i didn't know most of the guys to know how they hit) ...LOL... no one complained.....

one more.Played for a team couple years that every body thought they were either the leadoff hitter or the 4 hole, cleanup, noby was 5 down.So after every weekend tourney, his secretary mailed out all the stats for the weekend to everyone, everything,at bat ,walks,hits,2b,3b and homers. The next tourney, you batted in the order of last weeks finish.cant argue with the numbers.

tg69,love it.LOL i bet it didn't shut up some tho,as "they had a bad tourney and/or it wasn't their fault they hit bad"...LOL

i ran a team many moons back, and was having prols getting the guys there just 15 minutes before game time,so i could submit the line-up to the scorekeeper.well i finally got PO and put the names down in the line-up as they showed up,guess what they started getting there the 15 minutes early like i ask them to.LOL.....

mad dog,we had a leadoff hitter for years that never got to a game until game time, said he had stretches he did in his car while driving and still get out and hit 850/900 lifetime. A Doctor but he could hit and go get in the outfield so what do you say?

Played in a mini-tournament recently. I had overused my arm the week before and couldn’t throw overhand! Manager had me catch the game I couldn’t pitch. What an experience! After all the talk on this site, my brain was whizzing trying to keep track of all the batters and where they stand and where they look and where they hit. Then I got hoarse shouting out all the positioning on every hit. I only caught about half of the throws home. I hit about normal, lots of long balls, but I only got singles, not my usual doubles or triples. But that’s not the worst!

I took forever, getting my gear together and in the car. Seemed like I was moving in slow-motion and I was the last one out of the parking lot. When I got home, my wife looked at me and asked, with her cheeks puffed out, what happened? Sure enough, I stepped on the scale and I had gained 10 pounds just catching a game. Then I sat down in the recliner and didn’t have the energy to get up except for dinner, where I put on another 5 pounds.

Please don’t bill me for therapist fees. I have already self-diagnosed myself as fat/slow/lazy after my catching experience. Although I realize some therapists charge just to listen to a guy go on and on.

Another Sputnik moment-what's the call.
I hit one out in the championship game by accident-2 on and 4 runs in already. Got disgusted and never ran to first. One out. Appeal and I am called out. However-run scored-we got our 5- no harm done-except to my feeble brain. OK-out is made at first. Does it count as a HR? Do the runs really score? Should it be an out and runners go back? Little debate material?? Dave-I know your call-just want to see some debate.

still think they'll call it a hr for over the fence purposes,b/c it did go out.yes runs will score as long as it is not the last out.
