Discussion: POWER HITTERS

I'm not Bogie and he is the best at this, but I have done a lot of work with individuals including Softball Magazine Senior/Spring camps. Everyone has valid points including Xavier that you're not going to change into a power hitter in three days, but you can start the process and it doesn't matter how old you are you can still improve. As we age we have to make adjustments to continue to hit the ball hard. We did get some great responses and improvements from several people who did pick up 40-60 feet when their mechanic's improved. Even more important many hitters went from fly balls to line drives hitters. These gentlemen and ladies came to camp and worked very hard. We saw some very impressive improvements in the majority of these guys and girls because they listened and applied the advice they were given. After they went home they could still reference back to Bogie's principals in his Swing Makeover series as well.

Bat speed is important but what you have to improve is the ball exit speed off the bat. For every 1 mph improvement in exit speed, you can get up to 5 ft of distance. To improve exit speed you have to improve several items, especially good mechanics.

Bat speed can be misleading because people can swing like mad to improve speed but have terrible mechanics which doesn't help their hitting. So don't give up just because you're aging, you may just have to work a little harder to maintain or improve. Look at Bruce I would challenge most guys 10 years younger to duplicate his hitting.
If you get the chance to go to these camps you will have a great time and maybe even learn a few things.
Sorry for long response.

Discussion: Combat NIFONG endload

I agree with Bruce at the camp many of the players were using the new Nifong bat with good results. I just got the bat from Mike Kelly and using his rotation system I broke the bat in with about 100 swings and it really opened up and then after about 150 swings it went to a new level and the ball was flying off the bat. One of the guys hitting the bat had to have that bat so he's buying me a new Nifong.
Mike mentioned to me he has a new 30-day performance on his bats. If you don't like the bat return it and trade it for a different bat. Not sure of all the detail to find out more just email or call Mike Kelly Ultimate Sports. I'm not paid to say this just thought it was a unique concept.

Discussion: new rule 6.16 WIND OR SUN AFFECTING BOTH PITCHERS

I strongly agree with Bob - don't schedule games at those times of day on the affected fields!!!! Never made sense to me all you're doing is asking for complaints- legitimate complaints. Both for pitchers and hitters and I understand the objective is to get the games in but how much additional time does it take to stall a field for an hour??

Discussion: prayers for T Rex's (Terrell Stokes) wife, Becky.

Prays and thoughts go out to Terrell and his family. He is one of our standards when we evaluate players in Senior Softball. Class act on and off the field. Ms. Becky was always attending and supporting Terrell and will be missed, definitely a great lady.

Discussion: Hitting from tee vs. hitting pitched ball

Hitting off a tee is one of the best things you can do for your swing. Doesn't help your timing but does help with all the other mechanics that you need to be hitting the ball well. Mad Dog I would guess that you have some issues with hitting off your front foot even without hitting off the tee (the reason I say that is because I have to fight that myself.) Hitting off a tee actually helps me with that issue. One of the items I work hard on with hitting off the tee is really seeing the ball. Which to do that effectively you have to stay back and hit with the correct angle. Bob maybe I'm wrong as I know you hit well and with distance plus you work hard at it.
Bogey works out often with the tee and he had a phenomenal Worlds tournament partially because of the tee. I use the automatic tee (Q-Tee) and love it but it is a little bulky to carry to a tournament. Bogey use a Tee that he can put in his bat bag.
Bruce it doesn't matter if you hit off the tee or hit live pitching. You still hit it hard and deep!!
Omar I agree most of the time I will be breaking in bats or using older bats to hit off the tee and of course old balls.

Discussion: Best ball in Hot Weather

Time to kick the old dead horse on the balls. Sacramento the balls were as expected terrible. Really changes the game and not in a good way. When you have almost no home runs in a tournament then it's time to make a change. I realize they have a contract but before it's up let's do a little research and communicate to all of us what find a fair ball you have found. Not looking forward to Western Worlds in Sacramento in August strictly because of the ball.
