| Oct. 25, 2016 B94 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Is it a strike if ball hits front edge of strike mat and also kicks up some dirt? If you are using a one inch thick piece of wood as a plate it should be a pretty easy call to make on the front edge as the direction the ball travels and the sound on contact with the plate will tell you a lot. If it kicks back toward the pitcher it's a strike as it had to hit the plate first. If the ball hits the plate and continues toward the catcher it very likely hit the dirt first and skipped up off the plate. The tough one will be when the ball goes almost vertically off the plate as that will be where it would have hit both the ground and the plate almost simultaneously. I'm probably calling that a strike too. The thinner the plate (and if it's rubber as opposed to wood) the tougher the close pitch is to call but if it's that close the batter should have hit it on a 2 strike count - other than that it's up to him if he wants to chance it... |

Otherwise your reasoning is bang on LP - if the result of the swing counts on a HR ball it should also count in a DP situation... This is why I have always understood that it is simply a dead ball out. Maybe this is something SSUSA needs to revisit and clarify. BB1 I agree with what you are saying about the length of the batters box not being adjusted for the length of the plate however the batters box should be extended forward to account for the short strike (which was formerly a ball if it hit the plate) not backwards so you can effectively hit that pitch. I'm 6'3" and my stride length is 4'. Maybe a better way to look at staying in the "batter's box" is that the rear foot must be within the length of the strike mat when the batter swings. Just a thought... |
| Oct. 4, 2016 B94 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Bat Knob First of it depends if it's the old Big Cat with the red/white logos and bigger knob or the new black/gold Big Cat Ultra II Black. In either case the knob isn't screwed on. The older version the knob was simply glued on however, the newer version the knob has been redesigned to fit into the inside diameter of the handle which is then glued and pinned. I'd say even the newer version of the Ultra II (and most of the line up of Miken/Worth bats could all use a bit more glue as the knob tends to get loose and pivot slightly around the pin. |

| Aug. 15, 2016 B94 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Baden Fire Balls We also played in the SPA/Nit in Ohio Saturday and Sunday with no complaints on the Baden Fire ball that was used. As was said above, we too had a good supply of new balls provided throughout the tournament and they all flew well. The rain Saturday washed things out in the afternoon but the directors did well to adjust the schedule and recover on Sunday. The facility there was top notch and we will definitely be back next year. |

| May 27, 2016 B94 | Topic: Bats Discussion: WHAT DO YOU THINK? Typically you want to try to carry maximum bat speed through the point of contact. To achieve this you are looking for the most efficient combination of weight and bat speed that suits your swing. You want to be able to accelerate the bat as rapidly as possible while maintaining bat speed through the ball and for some people they feel they achieve this best with an end loaded bat others choose a balanced bat. An end loaded bat tends to take more effort to put into motion than a balanced bat, however, it the end loaded bat also tends to maintain bat speed through the point of contact better than a balanced bat if the bat has the same speed at the point of contact. You really need to try a few bats and see what feels good to you as this is a very personal thing and something you will only decide by trying some different bats out. The two bats you are comparing, as others have said, spec out and swing completely differently. You will find they don't feel similar at all if you were to hit both. Even though the Melee is end loaded it will be much less end loaded than the Big Cat and the one piece vs two piece design will give different feed back when you hit it. I'd suggest you try to find some guys local that have some different bats you could try to see what has the right feel for you and then move forward with your search for a bat accordingly. |

| April 13, 2016 B94 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Which Batch Is It? I'll second that Bruce! The Nightmare has a great endloaded feel, smashes the ball and has exceptional durability. The biggest issue I've seen is that guys aren't willing to put the time in to get used to the feel and swing weight of the bat and they put it down before it's broken in. Give the bat a chance and it will reward you! Can't wait to swing the most recent version of the bat as I understand the break in time is down and the performance is up! |
