Discussion: face masks

I wear a helmet with the face mask. Over the last 2 years. I have taken 2 shots off the helmet. Not liners. I get those easy. It was bad hops off the pitching rubber. Wish they would get ride of it. They can outline the legal box with those little marking flags they put in the holes for the bases when dragging the whole infield and finish it off with the chalk outline.

Moving up to the 75AAA level this year I might try my face mask when pitching. I will always wear the mask when playing other infield positions. I also plan on wearing the mask when playing outfield when I am looking directly into the sun. I have seen some very serious injuries to outfielders requiring ER and stitches.

Discussion: Knee replacement vs. Stem Cell Therapy

I live in a very large Del Web. Knee issues are rampant. The Stem Cell vs. a replacement seems to be a coin toss. Have guys swear by and hate both options. Good luck. I don't need either as of now, but when my knees hurt VODKA works quite well.

The Chicago Gray Sox use the Pitch safe. We are in Year 5. Very compact and I bring it to all the tournaments. 2 guys can set it up or take it down in under 30 seconds. Everyone on the team kicked in $20. Excellent choice.

Picked up the 2 piece in Vegas from Carlos. Used it out of the wrapper and then again in Ft Meyers. Let's put it this way. I sold all my other senior bats. 1st time in 18 years I only own one bat.

Discussion: 75AAA in FM

The Gray Sox liked the round robin. We hate prelims. A total waste of time and energy and injury potential.

We will accept whatever format is needed. We have been stuck with the 4-5 games on one day many times and it sucks. Now that we are all 75 to 78 4-5 games in a day would be even worse.

We played a night game in Vegas a few years ago. We lost the game because we lost one more fly ball in the lights and haze than our opponents. No night games.

Discussion: Ft Meyers

Just finished our 1st tournament at the 75 level. Just want to note really good tournament. Well run and organized. TD stayed on top of things. Thought the umpiring was really good. Sure, we disagreed with a few calls, but all of them hustled and carried themselves as if they wanted to be there.

Having pitched quite a few games over the last few years,by far, the best job of determining
or calling the 6-12 arc consistently.

Discussion: Ft Meyers Format

Just looked at the 75 and over format. Will be the first time I will play in a Round Robin
"Ring" tournament. I like what I see.

1. 7 games for sure instead of 5

2. U know when U play and the field

3. No useless prelims-all games have meaning

4. For the most part, no or little time between games. Makes it easy to plan other tourist
stuff with the wife.

Dbax is right. Why wait for the batter to get to 1st.

Batter walks. Tells ump he needs a runner. CR runs to 1st and the batter goes straight to the bench. Saves time.

Discussion: Keys to Tournament success

Obviously. great hitting is important. That can be fickle. IN one game in Vegas I hit 4 balls on the screws. Rocket liners that great defensive plays ran them down. 0-4. Next game 1 liner for a hit and 3 seeing eye mis-hits, 4-4.

I think the key is defense. Make the plays and get the outs U are supposed to get. Concentrate. Know where to go with the ball. Hit the cut off.
Talk to each other. Assume nothing. Great plays are an added bonus.

Guy makes an error-life happens. Encourage and move on to the next pitch.

Discussion: Purpose for allowing base runners to "run thru" or "over run" bases?

I like it. The two times I have had a bad hamstring pull was running full speed and having to quickly stop. If I could of run past would not have been injured.

Discussion: Stepping out of the front of the box?

ALL the batter box lines should be eliminated. Most are gone by the 3rd inning anyway.

No matter where U stand, a hitter has to defend the mat which keeps U in a small area.

Also, what difference does it make if U step on or in front of the plate during a swing. It means nothing

Discussion: Calling High Pitches

Just played SPA-NIT

Had an ump locked in on 6-10 and didn't give a rip about our rules. After about 10-12 absurd high calls (no where near 12 feet) the base umpire said (quietly)I was being squeezed badly and just have to deal with it for this game.

The next game had an ump who was consistent at a 5 foot flat arc. Both teams complained until we all realized it was like hitting off a tee.

My conclusion is that the shorter the distance (arc) between the high and low calls, the better.

Since most of the umps are coming from 6-10 associations at all ages, it would be best to join in and at least get umps who are somewhat consistent as to what a 6-10 arc is and we would know what to expect at a tournament.

As to pitching against senior bats, I wear protective gear, pitch from around 55 feet. In 5 tournaments this year, I have had only 4 liners hit at me. All catchable. At the 70 and over division, the 11th defender, a middle fielder, really discourages hitters from going there. Helps protect the pitcher. Maybe all ages should go to the middle fielder.
