Southern Nationals
Hey SSUSA
This tournament is this weekend. (Southern Nationals)
Why isn't there anything on the message board about it?
We have our times, but it seems that SSUSA doesn't want to promote this tournament and I can't understand.
We would like to build up tournaments in the southeast area so we can have places to play.
Please put the info on the message board so other teams can see this and maybe next year it will get bigger.
They are great turf fields to pay on.
Just my 2 cents

We talked to Terry Hennessy about maybe changing this tournament to an earlier date. It is currently to close to the date of the Eastern Nationals. I think there would be more participation if it were earlier. Any thoughts?

Hey
The 2nd or 3rd or 4th weekend of July would be a great date.
There is not much in this part of the country then.

I'm not sure who at SSUSA HQ made the decision to move Montgomery Swarm DOWN to Major from Major Plus but that was shown to be a very unwise decision.

Swarm came in and cleaned up on the two actual major teams: Darrell Harris and DT Express. These two teams have worked hard all year to STEP UP to the Major division after being elevated from AAA this year. And suddenly, here at the end of the season, just before Vegas, viola, Swarm is allowed to drop down???

Swarm was told to step up to major plus. For SSUSA and ISSA. I guess winning every tournament has been a little slow coming for them in M+. Been there done that. Take on your competitors vs making appeals to find easier competition!

Instead, they were allowed to STEP DOWN in SSUSA against the voices in Southern Region. ISSA didn't let them step down. That should be food for thought.

Too late for this tournament. But you need to reverse this decision and listen to your officials in the southern division!

I need to make a correction to my earlier comment.

Montgomery Swarm was not, and never has been a Major Plus team in SSUSA. I ask the Swarm and SSUSA to please accept my apologies for my incorrect comment.

Adrian - Not sure SSUSA ever put them to M+ (Ratings said they were moved to M in 2016, they were 55 at the time and we played them at AAA). They were made Major Gold by ISSA but don't believe they were ever "asked" to move to M+ by SSUSA but I could be wrong.

And I am confused, thought you guys were moved to Major last year after your finish in Vegas? That said, agree Swarm is a very tough M team, not sure they play enough in SSUSA to get moved to M+ unless they go to Vegas and do well like y'all did last year.

I am glad I am wrong. I have always appreciated the Swarm coach and players. Their talent, integrity, and sportsmanship have never been question.

I am guilty of talking without the correct information.

@Mck71 ... Yeap ... Agreed. That is where I was wrong.

Moved to Major last year? Yes, SSUSA and ISSA. I didn't know if it was based on Vegas where we finished 10th (made it to Sunday but didn't have enough players left to play). I A.S.S.U.M.E.D it was just an organizational thing to populate the M and M+ divisions. We moved from AAA to M. And a lot of teams moved from M to M+.

Adrian - SSUSA moves up teams based on performance, NOT to "populate the M and M+" divisions (at least that has been my view the past 10 years). ISSA does the same (for the most part) but their last year changes with the Major GOLD is a head scratcher and a few teams were moved that should not have been and a few not moved that should have been (depends on whom you ask). I am sure MOST teams prefer to win so they try and stay down as best as they can. As an example, you guys were a very successful AAA team and I felt deserved to get moved UP a little earlier but that didn't happen, good for you, not so good for the teams you were beating. We can discuss this next time I see you! :-)

At the end of the day, it's slow pitch softball. We should all be grateful that we can still play this kids game and hang out with some good people, I know I am (when I can get back to playing that is).

Good luck to all the rest of the year!

Just took a quick look at 2023 team activity. Unless I've missed something, all 3 teams mentioned have limited participation in SSUSA qualifiers for the current season.

DT Express- Southern Championships only.nothing prior to Southerns
Darrell Harris- Southern Championships, plus the rain-shortened Nashville tourney in March
Montgomery Swarm- Southern Championships, plus the rain-shortened Nashville tourney in March.

MCK71 and Tim,
This is about Darrell Harris and Associates.

The reason we only play in a few SSUSA tournaments is that are are very few in the southeast.
SSUSA should take in consideration of the other associations that we play in.
Some of us already travel 5-8 hours to every tournament we play in. As a team its hard to have to fly all over the country to play so we play where we can.
We will try and travel more next year to play more SSUSA, but as most teams, it is hard to afford long trips every month.
We play in the ones that we can.
We were 2-16 this year in major when I sent in the paper work to get moved back to AAA (was denied)
We played another tournament where we were mixed with AAA (in ISA) and won that tournament.
We played in the Southern Nationals and won 2 games. (came in 2nd out of 3)
We average 2 hrs a game and average 12-16 runs a game. (that is a good AAA team, not a major team.
Just because we played well in Vegas and made it to Sunday last year, we got moved up.
We are a very good AAA team and should be playing in AAA in Vegas. We have had less than 4 major teams in every tournament we have played in this year. (DT express and our team are usually the only major teams and they have beaten us more than we have beaten them.)
I agree that teams need to move up when they dominate divisions, but just because you have one good season, don't penalize a team for doing well.
Give a team 2 seasons to play and see if they are really that good or if they just played well in one year.
We got denied for Vegas again (after the Southern Nationals) to be moved down to AAA so we will go and compete in the major division.
I personally think we can compete with any team any at anytime if we are playing our best so we will see what happens in Vegas.
Have a great day

Moving up is a measure of a good team, I agree with that, but moving up in the middle of the season is ridiculous. How can they expect to move a team just before the eastern nationals and force them to play with the same roster.

SSUSA expects that team who has no major plus (due to AAA rules) to go out and compete against Major teams who may have up to 3 major plus players on team.

This is not meant to cry on here, just meant for staff to see how it be expected that a AAA team can compete under those rules

No problem with being moved up, just let the team play under the same rules.

also even if it was allowed to pick up 3 new players what do you tell the 3 that have been with you all year and have paid for tickets and hotels to travel to Virginia that they are going to sit.

How would anybody who has played this GAME like it?

I don't think that mid season moving up or down is fair to anybody.

grayhitter - Your overall statement is correct and I agree however with regards to Darrell Harris and Coop's statement above, check the Ratings, they were moved up last year after Vegas.

Coop - I totally get it, Southeast area does not have many SSUSA events (they are picking up in FL but outside of that, It's NC for 1, TN for 1 and GA for 1 best I can count). So yes, hard to justify individual expense for every player needing a card plus team fee for 1 or 2 tourneys a year.

And I absolutely hear what you are saying based on your inputs (though it's hard for SSUSA to care about your record in another assoc?). I will add that sometimes life isn't fair. While I might agree it's good to stay at one level for a few years to build, if you play well in certain tourneys (esp Vegas) you WILL get moved up, happened to us in 2015. Our first tourney as Major we went 0 - 5 in 2016 but have been playing Major ever since and just tried to get better. Fair or not fair, that's just the way it is.

Good luck in Vegas, hopefully all your guys will be available to play Sunday!
