| June 22, 2013 ? 121 posts | EYE BLACK I was just watching the Yankees/Rays game on TV. I noticed Travis Hafner wearing eye black under his eyes. I have been told that the purpose of wearing eye black is to reduce glare. Has anybody out there ever used eye back? Does it help? What can you tell us about your experience wearing it. Thanks for any info you may have. |
| June 23, 2013 HJ Men's 70 481 posts | I use the Mueller strips. They are cheap, don't make a mess and are easy to put on and take off. I only use them on 1 of our 4 fields which has a nasty sun field. I think they help but can't prove it. I notice they now make 1 strip which goes under both eyes and across the nose. Theoretically this should cut glare even more since less reflection off the nose. My attitude is if it is cheap and may help I do it. Available on ebay if can't get locally. |
| June 23, 2013 Ceres 73 posts | I don't think eye black helps at all. I thik we are sold a bill of goods by MBL,NFL and NCAA. Do you notice that some of thse players wear eye black like Tonto in the new Lone Ranger movie. I even see some of us outfitted in war paint also. It's time we grew up. |
| June 23, 2013 HJ Men's 70 481 posts | I don't understand the reference to growing up which is irrelevant and off point. If you don't think it works, fine. Mueller's website has some not very good science which measures that less light is reflected. Whether that makes a difference is for discussion. They have newer strips under the name "stealth" which they claim has special properties to disperse light and thus have less reflected to the eye. Incidentally, from prior research I know that eye color affects how you see in the sun. (Blue eyes have more problems with glare.) So it is possible that the strips work for some and not others. If we never grew up, we would still be taking salt pills before games and not drinking water. At my age I prefer to keep "growing up," by constantly trying new things and determining what works for me. |
| June 24, 2013 Clean Up 68 posts | I remember football players back in the 1950's wearing Eye Black. I don't know when or where the use of Eye Black first started. I seems that all through the 60's only football players used it. Rarely seen in any other sports. Then in the late 70' or mid 80's Eye Black appeared in a few other sports. Maybe in the early to mid 90's women's fast pitch softball sported Eye Black also it was seen in some baseball. Today, Eye Black is used in several outdoor sports. If so many years and sports are using it, I would think it must have some advantage in wearer's vision. I have never worn Eye Black and I am interested in the benefits of wearing it on bright sunny days. |
| June 24, 2013 Ceres 73 posts | HJ, I agree with your words about trying new things to see what works, but so many of us just do it for style and to look like Major Leaguers. You can see many gagets in senior softball which make us look like Little Leagers copying MLB rather than the elderly men we are. Eye black does not work for me and I have blue eyes. If you look at Harper of the Washington Nats he wears it as a fashion statement to look fierce in order to scare the pitcher.I did get a lot out of your reply. |

I have tried many things since I started with SB 5 years ago and have stopped using many of them since they didn't work for me. Clean Up, all I can say is I think they work for me. I buy strips which self adhere, make no mess and just pull off when the game is over. On ebay you can buy 36 for about 6 bucks. Other styles from Mueller cost more and I haven't tried them yet. They also have a style which is 1 strip which goes from under 1 eye over the nose and under the other eye which, which I previously mentioned. This makes sense to me and I intend to try that next (package of 12). Ceres, are you the Ceres from mythology or astronomy?? |
| June 24, 2013 jsheeran Men's 50 60 posts | I've been wearing eyeblack since I starting wearing contact lenses in my early twenties and it definitely reduces the glare and squinting and I will not play without out. |
| June 24, 2013 Ceres 73 posts | HJ, Ceres was the first asteroid discovered by man. It was seen using the telescope at the Palermo Sicily Observatory. I was there in 2000 for the 200th anniversary.Ergo I picked Ceres as my handle. jsheeran, as a contact wearer you need more protection because of the contacts effect on your eyes. When I wore them, I always wore sunglasses on sunny days. So you're a special case. |

| June 26, 2013 Bubble Gum 122 posts | In the last 50+ years. I have seen Magnets come and go. I have noticed Necklaces come and go. And have seen other things come and go. I don't know if Eye Black works or not, but it's still being used today. I would think that with that long of history in sports, there is some benefit from it's use. |
| June 26, 2013 balco Men's 60 118 posts | I wear eye black every time I play. I wear contacts. My eyes are so sensitive to light that a lot of times I wear the eye black as well as my sunglasses. I have had my eyes burnt from welding several times and if I have my eyes checked at the eye doctor I can't be dilated because they stay that way for several weeks. I have also had brain anyurisum which affects my sensitivity to light. So before anyone puts another down for wearing it, why not look at why? |

I keep it in my bag, just in case the mood strikes me again. Jsheeran----------------Yes, I'll forget for you too LOL. You guys are MUCH better than that. OKI kicked our butts in Tournament Finals for the Championship, although they do that to many teams more often than not. |
