July 21, 2017 JamesLG 420 posts | Older Miken U2 Hi All: I was wondering if any of you have information on an old Miken I recently traded for. On the outside it had the ASA 2000 marking. Has the flat paper Miken handle cap with the swoosh M and 34-28oz. The end cap is plastic with nothing on it. I know a lot of the older ones have the "W" on the cap. The grip was in bad shape from being in an old bat bag for many years so I took it off. The production date is 4-1-03. Is this the first year of the U2? The barrel has a totally different feel to it than the newer models. It is used but in good shape so I hit 3 balls with it and it fells very hot. Thanks for any information you can give me. James |
July 21, 2017 B94 Men's 50 138 posts | The smooth end cap and date stamp on this could very well be one of the early U2 bats that were said to be the original Ultra redone as U2s... Enjoy the bat it should be a lot of fun to hit. |
July 21, 2017 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | i checked some of the broken bat ends. (I kept the ends) and a "W" burned in but the other part of cap is a "M" for Miken with a kinda swoosh around it. I do not remember if the ones with W were waranty returns of what, given the time frame of about 17 years. However 2 of my 4, have the W and M all have a Miken logo, but two were the newer ones w\o the M or a burden W. One is still in wrapper. The ASA's were slightly better that one year previously back then, but do not know which one, I sold my ASA model to a fellow player and he loaned it out a year or two later it it got broke. Enjoy the bat but don't loan it out. |
July 21, 2017 JamesLG 420 posts | Thanks for the input. Are these older Miken's still legal for SSUSA play? I probably won't keep this one because my playing days are about over. The end cap on the one I have is completely smooth with nothing on it at all. The only mark the cap has on it is where it looks like it was dropped on the concrete near the edge. I never got to hit one of the old gray originals but this one has a totally different feel than any bat I have hit is a few years. Thanks: James |
July 21, 2017 titanhd Men's 60 639 posts | The earlier produced models had the smooth end cap with no Miken logo "M".The Bat had no ASA stamp and a bubble knob sticker. The "W" in the endcap was burned in by Miken to indicate bat was a warranty replacment. Then came the ASA stamp and the logo M endcap. The Miken II with no ASA stamp is the most sought after and said to be the better model version. |

July 21, 2017 DCPete 409 posts | You would know if it was an original gray Ultra, those bats were insane . . . |
July 21, 2017 southerinman Men's 50 52 posts | I have 6-7 U2's, all pre senior stamp (2008?). Started buying them in my late 40's because I planned on playing senior ball. From the information I have been able to gather 03's were the only ASA stamped bats,04-08 have no stamps. As far as refurbished OG Ultra's I was told the only way to tell is to remove the grip. If it's gray instead of black then it's an OG Ultra with altered to decals from the Miken factory. I found a lot of information here. http://forums.softballfans.com/threads/the-pre-2007-miken-ultra-ii-buyers-guide.1179828/ |
July 22, 2017 JamesLG 420 posts | Thanks for all the information. One other thing I noticed is the bat has the ISF 1.20 oval on it. That is probably standard on the older bats. Thanks: James |
July 30, 2017 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Just because the bat has an ASA marking doesn't mean it is legal to use in any ASA sanctioned game. Those bats were insane, but so were the balls when the bats came out. Pretty lethal combination back then. |
July 31, 2017 Hitemdeep 44 posts | remove the grip and it should have month and year written on it with what looks like nail polish or it will be a very sloppy engraving. Sometimes even looking raised. |
Aug. 1, 2017 JamesLG 420 posts | Thanks All: I did remove the old grip tape and the production date is 4-1-03 Thanks: James |
Aug. 1, 2017 cyborg45 Men's 75 194 posts | I bought the original in 2003. It has a smooth end cap. It does not have a production date underneath the tape. All it has is a big "check mark". No 1.20 oval or ASA stamp. Hottest bat ever. As a side note, if you returned the bat after it was banned, they would take off the clear coat, ( I guess for id purposes) and return it along with a new U2. Which promptly got banned about 3 months later. |
