Senior Leagues in So Cal that allow more than single wall bats
I was real happy when I turned 49 and could play senior softball with people more my own age. I just turned 59 and play in three leagues. Two are single wall bats only using 44 COR balls, the other allows ASA bats but does not play constantly as it at BLD West Covina and they cancel games often and have black out periods when they have money making events.
I do not understand the need to use crappy single wall bats, why not be safer and use 52 Cor?
I find most players, umpires LDs and city's dont understand that a bat doesn't hurt a player, the ball does.
I am sick of playing single wall, why doesn't SUSSA organize local leagues for guys like me that cant travel and play tournament ball?
Frustrated in Whittier, who is in the same situation and what can we do about it?

The .52 core balls are very bouncy. If it's hit hard at you in the infield chances are you are going to lose teeth or a broken orbital bone. The .52 core balls suck for infielders.

Hey Smarkley3,Two options. I don't know if you are available Monday mornings but I play in a Senior 55 and over league at Perris BLD. We use Rock balls and senior bats. Nearly every player out there plays in Tournaments so the competition is really good. You can find that league if you google MVUDSS which stands for Menifee Valley Upper Division Senior Softball. The second option is in Rancho Cucamonga at Quakes Stadium. This is Thursday nights and again we get to use senior bats. This league is very competitive as well as about 75% of the players play tournaments. this is a 50 and over league with an upper and Lower Division. You can find this @ MLS Softball on the computer when you get to programs click on the Rancho Cucamonga link. Good luck

Jeff

Benji4, the idea of using the 52 core is to decrease injury's. The ball does not have the same COR so when hit by one does not cause as serious injury. I been hit in the head by both and you can fell the difference. Wear a mask and/or other gear if you cant handle the bounce.
I already have a 30 to 40 minute drive to play in Long Beach. Palm Springs and Perris are way farther than I want to drive. Yesterday I played in a Co ED 50+ in Pico Rivers at 9:00 AM the hurried over to BLD Wests Covina ( ASA Composite bats w BLD Balls, LOL) only to find the other team forfeited.
At this point I am worried if I am gonna play at all. The BLD League is great when we play but, BLD cancels many games because the fields are need for "paying customers. Several people have worked to try to start other senior league in Whittier and/or Santa Fe Springs but, there are a number of free (BLD WestCo) and informal games, practices and OVL that seem to hinder getting enough teams to play, as they would have to shell some cash to play in the new league or leagues.

I would encourage you to do some research on softballs. The .52 core ball wasn't made to decrease injury only slow down the speed. That core ball is terrible when it comes to bad hops.

I am guessing you are not a major plus player otherwise you wouldn't be complaining about what softball is used.
The day I need a mask to play infield is the day I will find another hobby.

Oh and sorry I took a little bit to respond I was in vegas playing with youngsters who average age was 28 years and we were using dudley 44/375 balls with very good broken in provided bats. Oh and although there were lasers being hit nobody complained about the balls.

Good luck on finding a league.

Im with you Benji, I played this summer in a league that used ASA bats and 52-300 balls. Never in my 30 years of playing have I had balls hop up on me like this year. Charging a ball and having it bounce up and hit you in the shoulder or chest with no visible depression in the field. While I applaud the intent of providing "safer" equipment the 52-300 equation needs some tweaking and is far from perfect.

Same here, we went to the 52/300 ball last year and the bounces are much worse.

If you do the research on the .52 ball you will see the exact opposite of what you claim. Severity Index impact numbers are at least 2/3 less than a .44 cor ball. All of the info has been published.

This is a great discussion but, I still have no senior league ball to play with senior composites. Who in So Cal would want to play ina league that plays week days with senior rules and bats? I think I can get a local LD to help set it up, possible in Santa Fed Springs if we can put at least four teams together.
