infield fly rule
Bases loaded, no outs and an easily caught pop up is hit to the pitcher. The ball hits the pitching screen, in the air and is not touched by the pitcher. (which is a no-pitch dead ball in our league.) Umpire call "infield fly" before it hits the screen. Dead ball or infield fly?

Infield fly...dead ball and the batter is out.

The umpire should have called "infield fly IF fair"
once it hits the net, is was a foul ball and NOT an infield fly.
It isn't right, but the net is a foul, dead ball.

coop3636 gets to the correct ruling, but through slightly flawed analysis ... If it's a "no-pitch dead ball" in their local league rules, that's simply what it is, and not a foul ball ... They define it as no pitch, so it's as though nothing happened ... "Do-over" on the next pitch ...

Some rec leagues call a dead ball strike when the net is hit. Some leagues allow one ball hitting the net with two strikes ( 2 1/2?).

Hey
In our league it is a foul ball, if it is the 3rd strike, you are out.
That's what I was using to make the call

PS
Did anyone know that NSA senior ball has gone to using nets in tournaments?
League ball is OK, but not in tournaments.
I hope SSUSA NEVER does that.
I am a pitcher and it takes a lot from the game (IMO)

You must be a good defensive pitcher Coop.

I'll leave that opinion to others
I just know I am just crazy enough (or dumb enough) to try and catch the bullets up the middle.
Been pitching since 1978 and still love the action.
CYA on the field

Just curious from anyone who pitches.
Did you notice any difference in the number of people who shoot the middle as you aged up form 65+ with no middle fielder to 70+ with the middle fielder.

Jinx, on the play you described the ump called infield fly before the ball hit the screen, so the call stands.
