Foul Tip vs Foul Ball
Rule 1.29 Foul Tip: A foul tip is a batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head, to the catcher's hand(s) or glove and is legally caught by the catcher. NOTE: Any batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head to any part of the catcher's body or equipment other than the hand(s) or glove is a foul ball and a dead ball. EFFECT: The ball is dead on all foul tips and the batter is out if it is the third strike.

Since we have the 1-1 count in the 50-55-60 age brackets now with a courtesy foul, this rule is more likely to come into play. This would mean that a player with two strikes and then has a foul tip would be out since a foul tip (which means it fits the above definition) is not a foul ball.

Staff please correct me if this is wrong.

I umpired USSSA games and the caught foul ball rule was that any contact of a bat with the ball that wasn't in fair territory was considered a foul ball and an out if the ball was caught. If I am not mistaken, that means there is no such thing as a foul tip For USSSA purposes a foul tip on the first strike in a count would be an out. In Senior softball, would a foul tip on the first pitch be an out or a strike?

TX... read the rule again the end of the last sentence before the effect..." is a foul ball and a dead ball" ...The foul tip rule is for a batter that tips it straight back with less than 2 strikes.. if caught it is a foul ball and a dead ball but not an out

The effect actually says "the ball is dead on all foul tips and the batter is out if it is the third strike."

TX.. yes you are correct it does.. and the same result for a foul ball.. your op said that a foul tip wasn't a foul ball.. I just showed you that it was.. When and if SSUSA uses a 1 and 1 count with a courtesy foul then a foul tip on a supposed 3rd strike would be the courtesy foul

A foul tip is NOT a foul ball, by definition (see below) and, accordingly, is NOT considered a "waste foul" for purposes of the "1-1" Pitch Count provisions for play in the Men's 50+ through 60+ and Women's 50+ age groups ... The Men's and Women's 40-Masters divisions play with NO waste foul, making the foul tip discussion moot for them ... A "foul ball" can be considered as a waste foul, but a foul tip cannot ... The umpire's judgment on whether or not the batted ball meets the specific definition of a foul tip (first sentence of Definition §1.29) is controlling ...
__________

Rulebook Definition §1.29FOUL TIP
A foul tip is batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head, to the catcher's hand(s) or glove and is legally caught by the catcher.
__________

Rulebook §7.4STRIKE CALLED BY UMPIRE
..
C For each foul tip. EFFECT: The ball is dead and the batter is out if it is the third strike.

A batter doesn't deserve another swing if you hit a "foul tip". That seems almost impossible to do if you're actually trying to hit the ball.

Dave.. Then I'm not reading this rule correctly...
Any batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head to any part of the catcher's body or equipment other than the hand(s) or glove is a foul ball and a dead ball.. what does the last part of the rule say? (is a foul ball and a dead ball) I understand why the batter would be out just like if a fielder caught a fly ball in foul territory on a 3rd strike.. this would cancel out any courtesy foul because the ball was caught

B.J. ... Don't over read Definition §1.29 ... The FIRST sentence defines a foul tip .. The SECOND sentence (the NOTE) defines a foul ball in a similar, but not identical circumstance, which is, for example, a ball that bounces off the catcher's chest and does NOT go directly to the catcher's hand(s)/mitt ... The THIRD (and last) sentence is the EFFECT: All foul tips are a dead ball and the batter is out if it happens with 2 strikes in the count ...

Really no reason to have a foul tip rule in softball. All that's needed is what defines a foul ball. Another baseball rule that shouldn't be in the rulebook.
