Just Plain Wrong!!!
SSUSA Staff,

Our team traveled to Sacramento (3 years in a row) to play in the Western National Championship to win the first leg of the Triple Crown and the Number 1 seed. Mission accomplished.....well sort of. We are ready to play the East Coast Champions....what they aren't coming??? Not our fault. I consider it a "forfeit" We spent, time (people getting off work), and money (not to mention health risks because of the air quality) go to the Western Nationals. I understand we win the National Championship by default..."whoopie"...we want the Number 1 Seed as advertised on your website and in the SSUSA tournament announcement emails that you send out. This will be the last time I will be going to Sacramento if this how it works! Just Plain Wrong!!!

I still cant find anything in the rule book about it. Could the SSUSA office please send me the page and section that says we lose our number 1 seed. Thanks

DOLFAN ... You appear to have a misconception regarding what you play for when you compete in an Eastern or Western National Championships event ... The ONLY thing that is guaranteed to an East/West Champion is remaining eligible to win the most prestigious team competition award: he Triple Grand Slam Championship ... IF your East counterpart comes to Las Vegas, you have the opportunity to compete on the field of play for the USA National Championship under a special game format ... If they don't come, we give the USA Championship (and the corresponding awards) to YOU as though you had played and won the game ...

HOWEVER ...

If there is NO USA Game, there is also no guaranteed seeding position ... An East or West Champion without a USA Game opponent from the other side of the country seeds within the entire group and receives no preferential placement ... They play where they seed conventionally ... This is because:

• The East vs. West game is NOT a randomly generated seeding game, like all others ... It is by design, matching two specific teams that were champions in the Eastern (Valdosta) and Western (Sacramento) National Championships tournaments ...
• The game is a guaranteed 7-inning game and is NOT "on the clock" ... This can adversely affect tie-breakers for the two teams involved, specifically the "aggregate runs allowed" criteria ... Worst case (true) example: In Phoenix in 2011, the 50-AAA USA Game went nine innings, with a final score of 30-26 ... The team that WON the game was seeded #9 (LOWEST of the nine unbeaten teams in pool play) and the loser also lost their other seeding game and was seeded dead LAST (#29 of 29 teams) in the bracket because of the "aggregate runs allowed" tie-breaker ... This was an unfair result that came out of a pre-arranged game played under different rules than the rest of the randomly generated seeding pool play ... The #1-#2 seed arrangement is designed SOLELY to protect the teams in an actual USA Game ... It is not an additional award component from the East/West events ...
• Matching two theoretically stronger teams, and ensuring one of them takes a loss, is also unfair ... They both could well have been 2-0 with randomly generated opponents ...

It's apparent you don't agree with us on this, but there is very little chance this tournament policy (instituted in 2013) will change in the foreseeable future ... Good luck ... We really DO hope you win it all ... Triple Grand Slam Champions are an impressive and rare occurrence ...

Is the statement "The #1-#2 seed arrangement is designed SOLELY to protect the teams in an actual USA Game ... It is not an additional award component from the East/West events" posted anywhere on the tournament announcement or in the rule book???

I see plenty of times where the SSUSA quotes the "Rule Book" I just wanted something to reference. Thanks

DOLFAN ... We don't want to "pick at nits" here, but it's not a Playing Rule item yet in the Rulebook ... It is, however, an occasionally confusing component of our internal tournament administration policies and procedures ... Inclusion and clarification in the next Rulebook print version (early next year) has no apparent downside in our view ... Thanks ...

Curious as to why runs against is the first tie-breaker, when thereading are other factors that can play into it? Example, 2 teams playing on a field with the sun in the batters eyes or wind blowing in at 20 mph, the score will be lower, so a 9-8 win is a huge advantage over two teams playing the exact opposite fields (sun in fielder's eyes or wind blowing out at 20 mph). That game could be 30-28, due to the conditions. Run differential is a more fair evaluation than runs against.

Free stuff is available at every casino in town. If you want a t-shirt, a buffet or a blender you just have to show your ID to the pretty girl and spin the wheel.

If you're coming to play for the title you should want to compete for it. As a 1 seed or a 23 seed, you have to beat everyone there. It's just a matter of sequence.

Congrats on winning the Westerns, DOLFAN. Good luck to your team in Las Vegas.

SS11 ... The aggregate runs allowed tie-breaker is above run differential principally as a sportsmanship issue ... This is somewhat different philosophically from the flat-belly ball ages, where sportsmanship is sometimes lacking! ... We will reward your team for solid defense that shuts your opponent down offensively rather than rewarding the concept of "...we can get a better seeding result if we hang a couple of touchdowns, with two-point conversions, on them on the open.." ... Of course, you can always submit it in writing for the National Rules Committee's consideration in late November ... We see it every couple of years, but as a single voter in that group, it's difficult for me to envision the seven vote majority for change being anywhere close ...

DOLFAN ... You touched on one of my favorite sayings ... "..Common sense isn't all that common!.." ... Have fun, play safely and good luck in Las Vegas!
