I still think Platooning is a great idea for Senior ball
but not enough others want to support it.
An idea before it's time?
Maybe but something positive to think about and discuss
at least. once in a while.

What about going to performance restricted balls?
For Seniors,
I can't believe, as I have NEVER talked with anyone
who wanted to play with lesser balls in any game,
any time and any place, that this is a widely held belief.

I don't know the problems of younger guy player/tournaments.
I hear there's a lot of bat doctoring/cheating.
But I know the Senior game,
my game and the game of my peers
as well as anyone
and many to most of us
don't want to and won't play with what
we've always called "Sh.tty Balls".
Let's deal with cheating and cheaters
without letting them and/or ignorance and/or greed
destroy our game.

Am I all by myself out here again?
If not weigh in because we've learned there's a movement a foot
that could do just what I and many others never want to see happen.

I don't like playing with sh.tty balls, never did and won't.
As Gary Pro said, leave the ball/bat combinations we've struggled,
made investments in and have learned to accept, alone.
There's many other ways available to ensure safety without killing the game.

Joe:
Just wondering, if platooning was allowed, which platoon would you be on?

I just hope it's not one with 30-50 guys waiting to play (mil platoon size)

LT Joe, where do you want me to play, err I could just sit for 4 games and bring the water jug in. Sarg. didn't know.
lol

Sorry Joe, couldn't resist.

That brought back boot camp memories and a good chuckle.

Tell how you would go about platooning--one group
play defense and one group bat or one group play
1-3-5-7 and they other group would play 2-4-6

Platooning? Not sure what you mean by that Einstein. Can you describe? If it’s 10 guys hitting and another 10 fielding I would never get a team together. Maybe not everyone wants to field but everyone always wants to hit.

Balls …I find the 375 compression ball okay when cool out but it gets to soft on a hot day and much prefer the 500 compression. Most of the young 50 year olds that come up to play senior ball on our team are enthused with senior ball once they get a taste because of the good competition at their own age and, we all love the prospect of being able to hit a ball out of the park. There are not many things in ball that equal the excitement of “having just a chance” to jack a ball now and then and that opportunity does not happen for many of us who play ASA bat rules. We play a lot of ASA bat rules in our area with mush balls and that is not any fun. The bat rule for seniors is what gives SSUSA a large marketing edge over many other associations that don’t recognize this unique niche and is the reason our team prefers to play more tournaments that adopt the senior bat rule then any other. Given a choice there is no contest.

I can’t imagine anyone doctoring a senior bat? It defies logic. They all break fast enough as is. If players are actually doctoring bats would not a harder ball solve that problem as well? Stands to reason that a hard ball & doctored bat combination would cause the bat to blow up real quick.

George C. Scott sure was good in Platoon. Oops. I guess I should be over in trivia 12. Either way, a good OLD movie, and same with the platooning idea. Best left to gather dust. I want to play both O and D, and am betting that almost all players feel the same way.

Hey Jim,
I'm glad we're having some good fun talking about platooning.
When I first brought it up, it got rough.
But it's not 2 separate teams.
It's one dedicated line up for offense which conforms to all the present rules
and regs and anyone in the line up or not that's on the roster
and on the bench can play defense anytime, anywhere.
Platooning does have other meanings that make it confusing
but unlimited defensive substitution probably says more
of what it actually looks like.
Great sense of humor desert guy but it's not
to completely different teams.
You can do it with 11 guys and still only bat 10 if you want
and everyone plays all the time.
You could rotate the one guy around the whole field
giving most everyone an inning off.
Whew!

Bruce, so deal with the cheaters. But for goodness sake STOP messing with all the other rules just to accommodate guys who cannot hit with anything else.

Two team division are such a joke. Even four is pathetic.
Just not worth spending much time and money on.

If you TRULY want to protect pitchers, get rid of the special Seniors only bats. NO need to have to use anything that guys under 50 cannot.

Is there a point? What great idea or solution will you Dirty, bring to the table ? You are starting to sound like Gary 19 & the Stoneclown.

Hot weather & having runners, pinch hitters, & a few good players that can play defense. Just what is wrong with a team that has plunty of players that are willing to be role players? A great team will have 5-6 outfielders!

My ideas.

The platooning idea is absurd. It is slow-pitch softball. Guys need to be able to play both halves of the inning, or find a level where they can.

MANY rules are changed, often for the worse, just to accommodate the "needs" of guys to hit homers in their 50s when they probably weren't in their 20s and 30s. That is inherently sad.

Small tournaments are a joke. What is the point? Those are not tourneys, but rather forms of exhibitions. The game needs to be improved so more teams will want to travel and play.

It is pretty clear that as long as Seniors can use bats that NO one else can, safety is NOT a concern of anyone at all.
