March 1 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | Well its rec time again. I'll be using my new Spirit Bat tonight in rec. Its suppose to be 70 today here in Temecula. So it should be fun. Anyone else using the Spirit in ASA play? How do you like it? For those that are going to Lancaster I'll see you Saturday :O) |
March 1 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Marv, I would like to know how your Spirit bat does. so please keep us posted. Thanks Harry |
March 2 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | It was a little cool even in the early game. About 60 when we started. Went 3 for 4 all line drives. One in the gap at about 270. You have to know I'm not a home run hitter. I do like to hit line drives into the gaps. This baby beats my blue combat to shame. Its 4 years old and it doesn't even compare to feel and pop. The bat has only 2 buckets of balls (50) off a tee so its starting to come around. Anyone else on the board using this bat? I'd like to hear from you if you are. |
March 2 Gary19 Men's 50 2609 posts | 'a little cool'. 'About 60'. On March 1. Awwwwww, poor baby. LOL |
March 2 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | What can I say Gary it's Southern California. We don't have Winter. We just have 2 seasons Warm and Not so Warm. Right now we are in Not so Warm :O) |
March 2 Gary19 Men's 50 2609 posts | Just messing with you. Come to Northeast Ohio, and I will show you 'a little cool'. :) |
March 2 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | No thanx!! I spent a month in Cleveland one week in the 1970s when I was Mr. Gasket. That was just after the river caught on fire and they couldn't put it out :O) |
March 2 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Now there is a name that brings back memories of auto parts and Summit Racing. Gary would have been in grade school...lol literally. |
March 2 Gary19 Men's 50 2609 posts | taits, I wish. I graduated from high school in 1974. |
March 3 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | Yes Taits those were fun days. I had several customers up your way. The great thing about Fresno is I could see all of them and never leave Blackstone ave. Most I suspect are gone now. Eddies Speed Center, Service Center, National Speed Center and Super Shops. Then Summit wasn't around. At least not nationally. Catalog houses were a no no then. It was all about the big wholesalers. The ones that got eaten by catalogs and the internet. :O) |
March 4 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | I remember the shop. Spent a "few" bucks there. Don't recall the others, other than Summit, I still buy from there on occasion. As you said many cat companies are on line now, w\ just one large wear house to worry about. Super shops rings a loud bell however just can't place it. |
March 4 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | Up that way we had Tognottis in Sacramento. But when he committed suicide, and I think he took his wife with him, don't know what happened there. Al Morris probably took over. Competition Specialties is still doing wholesale. I suspect Speed Warehouse in Hayward is still there. You'd know them as Vic Hubards. Super Shops I know is out of business. Drugs and hookers (not headers) got him with his pants down and 100 stores. All the So Cal warehouses are gone. Four Wheel Parts is still around. George Adler is too mean and tough :O) Use to have Dick Cepek but they're gone too. I don't miss it much except for the free passes to the Races. Have a good year. If your ever down for one of our tournaments say hello. For that matter any old drag racers your welcome to come by an bench race a little :O) |
March 4 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | I'll send email on this to get back to main spirit bat listing... |
March 15 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Marv19, It has been a few weeks, how do you like your Spirit Bat. I believe that it is ASA approved. I am thinking of getting one but would like some feed back. Thanks Harry |
March 15 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | marv19 hadn't heard about tognotti, when did that happen.i used to live in that shop drooling, when i needed parts for my bracket racer.got my basically stock 383 dodge super bee down into the 11's b/c of them.did have a set of 4.56 gears under her tho...... |
March 15 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | birdie last week I went 3 for 5 all were solid line drives. But the last two outs were after i got hit so my push off leg was hurting. We have an early game tonight so I'll let you know. I have a guy on the team that is a big hitter I'm going ask him to use the bat. BTW we wont have any more Spirits for a couple of months due to tooling for manufacturing in the USA. |
March 15 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | Mad dog. You're a prize :O) Its guys like you that kept me in business for nearly 20 years. I had a sales manager tell me once "if it wasn't for the male ego we'd all have to out and get real jobs" I love that quote. It was so true. When Don died is not really clear to me. I think 5 years ago. I know his son and daughter run the place now. Nice store wasn't it or isn't it. Was a Safeway Market. He built on in the back for warehouse space. I used to love to go to his and Speed's warehouse shows. Very classy operation. Both of them. He opened Tognotti's in 1965 when he was 25 years old if memory serves me. When I was B M (before marriage) My partner and I had a Jr Fueler then later part owner in the Jolly Green Giant funny car. I didn't know how much fun it was then it was just the way life was. As it is with good parks now in So Cal we had 5 drag strips to choose from in the 60s. Something was always going on. |
March 15 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | hey marv,it was guys like me that put your kids thru college prolly...LOL....yeah there were a bunch of tracks back then,i started over at firbird in phoenix,az(well Scottsdale)had a neighbor who had just moved there(we both were in the air force back then, luke AFB),and he got me started into drag racing, before leaving and getting station at mather AFB in sacramento. good luck in your new season there, wish i was still in the area to come to one of your tourney's. |
March 16 batman27 Men's 65 24 posts | how does spirit compare to veteran bat |
March 16 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | Batman I cant give you an honest comparison on Miken. I had a red end load but sold it in November. It wasn't the right weight for my swing. I have a first addition Vet and I like it and use it. Its the same as the Spirit in distance off a tee right now. I'm leaning toward the Spirit as it gets more broken in. I don't hit home runs but I want my line drives and grounders to get through the infield quickly. Remember I'm 68 years old and every little bit helps. As for Last night I was 4 for 6 all line drives except for the one pop up. The other out was to the left fielder. Bummer... if I was playing Seniors it would have been a double but 20 year olds move just a little faster to the ball :O) My friend used it. Big guy about 35. He hit some screamers. One he nearly knocked over the 3rd baseman. All of his were line drives also. Said he really liked the feel. I'm pretty sure when he's there he will help me break it in. |
March 18 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | I forgot to mention the "Spirit" has a 1 year warranty |
March 18 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Marv19, I just ordered a Spirit bat and received a call from the rep. I am going to wait two to three weeks for the brand new model. It is completely made in the USA. I believe in South Carolina. He assured me that it was best to wait for the new technology. We will wait and see. Thanks Harry |
March 19 ronnie( g) 9 posts | ha guys ,like to no more about the spirt bat, and where i would order it from. im looking for a good ASA bat. ronnieg |
March 20 birdie Men's 70 802 posts | Ronnie, I ordered mine on this site. www.socalssa.com. Look for bats and follow the directions. Thanks Harry |
March 22 Marv19 Men's 60 498 posts | Ok Guys my Spirit is no longer a Home Run Virgin. My buddy after hitting 2 dribblers over swinging hit a 325 shot over left center. He had the biggest grin on his face after that. At 50 degrees and in the dew I was impressed. It was the only dinger all night. Me... 1 for 1 and 3 walks. I'm so menacing they pitch around me :O) After he went yard a couple of other guys started using it. We have a bye next week so CU N 2 .... |
