May 24 armiho211 Men's 70 449 posts | had a retina detachment of my left eye this past saturday, started as a large black shadow on the outside of my left eye. unable to see a doctor until tuesday, operation was done same day, complete with a gas bubble. i am suppose to lay face down for 15 minutes every hour, and sleep on my left side due the procedure done the left eye. QUESTION : any of you boys gone thru this ? what was your experience and anything in particular that would have made your recovery time faster and easier. the main thing : did it work out okay, and got back normal vision, any effects in playing softball? doctor says not to run or play softball for about 4-6 weeks. would appreciate your experience. thanks ! |
May 24 docswear Men's 55 99 posts | Jim... sorry to hear the PVD went south on you. It does happen. Your recovery time and depth of recovery will depend on how much and where the retina detatched as well as what procedure was used to repair it. A simple laser procedure in the far periphery really clears without any problems fairly quickly while a more complicated scleral buckle requires more time and can lead to more difficult problems afterwards. If you want more information, please feel free to e-mail me at docswear@gmail.com and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Most importantly, do what your surgeon has asked you to do and don't do anything strenuous until he clears you to do so. good luck.. docswear |
May 24 DoubleL10 Men's 70 907 posts | Frankie, I had a detached retina (right eye) in late-2002. Mine was so badly detached, the surgeon had to install a schleral buckle around it so it would heal properly. I was told I very nearly lost the sight in that eye. Mine started on the way to work early one morning and progressed like someone was pulling a shade from the right side of my face over the upper part of my eye. By the time I got to the office, I could barely see out of the eye. I called my opthamologist as soon as his office opened and saw him right away. I had the surgery later that day and had the gas bubble as well. I underwent the same type recovery as you, I think it was 2 weeks before I could leave the house and even stand out in the yard. I watched a lot of TV when I was told that was OK. I recovered as well as could be expected with the buckle still around my eye. Objects out of my right eye appear longer and skinner than they actually are due to the buckle still being around the middle of the eye. I was "lucky" in that mine occurred in November so it had no affect on my softball other than no BP for a few weeks. Good luck on your recovery! |
May 24 docswear Men's 55 99 posts | Ok... sorry Armiho... for some reason I thought you were Hombre.. senior moment.... but... same offer.. please e-mail me if you have any questions.. Double 10 .. other than having your macula detatch (middle area of vision) sounds like you had the worst kind of detatchment. You were very lucky to only end up with a little distortion. Thanks to Wood for bring my error to my attention.. |
May 24 armiho211 Men's 70 449 posts | doc and larry- really appreciate your responses. this laying down on my face for 15 minutes " every " hour is getting old . but needs to be done. the weird thing about the operated eye, is that it feels and looks like my eyeball is 3/4 full of water and slushes around when i walk around or tilt my head ( must be the gas ). the vision at this point is like looking thru a very muddy windshield and if i close my good eye, the operated eye makes blurry images look twice as big as they really are. i had cataract surgery done in jan. of this year, wonder if this contributed to this problem. LARRY- good luck in reno and hope to " SEE " ya down the road . DOC- may take you up on your offer if i have more questions. thanks to both of you.! frank, texas wildcatters 70's |
May 24 DoubleL10 Men's 70 907 posts | Frankie, I had lasik in both eyes about 2 years prior to the RD. I even asked my surgeon at one of my follow-up visits if the lasik could have caused or contributed to the detachment. She did not think so. Hope your recovery goes well and also hope to see you later this year! LL |
May 26 armiho211 Men's 70 449 posts | LARRY- ANY AFTER EFFECTS like floaters after your recovery ? it feels like my eyeball is 3/4 full of water and slushes around when i move my head. i imagine the gas will dissapate as time goes by. i am finding it very difficult to lie on my stomach 15 min out of every hour, but i am doing my best because i must do so to make the recovery time faster. i imagine your eye is doing very well after your procedure, as you have no problem hitting the ball. thanks, frankie |
June 8 armiho211 Men's 70 449 posts | docswear- DOC- after 2 1/2 weeks , the gas bubble is now completely gone. my operated eye is getting back to normal. the first week was rough , not sure if i would be able to recover and get back to playing softball. the retinal tear is mending, i am supposed to lay off running for a 3-4 more weeks. things are " looking " very well, i appreciated your emails and words of encouragement during the last 2 1/2 weeks. you are a class guy, doc.. thanks again, frank armijo |
June 8 DoubleL10 Men's 70 907 posts | Frankie, Glad to hear you are mending well! Luckily for me, I guess, is that the eye that had the detachment is my right eye. When hitting, I pick up the ball first with my good (left) eye and the right eye does not impede my hitting. Also, I think the brain compensates for the schleral buckle around my right (makes objects skinnier and taller) and it does not impede my hitting or fielding as far as I can tell. I had some floaters before the surgery but they are not bad even now. Hope to see you on the field before long. LL |
June 8 armiho211 Men's 70 449 posts | larry- the fear of the same thing happening again will forever be in the back of my mind. i have another visit with the doctor in about 2 weeks, i will see what he thinks about returning to play softball. whatever he says, i will add 2 more weeks. good to see you today at kiest park tournament in dallas , hope your team takes it all. frankie |
June 9 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Frank, You can still round them bases pretty good. You can be professional senior pinch runner. Nah, I want you back playing full time. I've already put Reuben out just playing catch. |
