Just curious as to what the weather was like this past weekend in Reno. How did it effect games? We come in Tuesday and have our fingers crossed!

Discussion: Rules for Courtesy Runner from the plate in regular leagues (non-tournament).

Our rules are as follows:
1. Coach must notify umpire before games begins identifying up to 2 players who might use CR from home.
2. CR must be touching backstop behind home plate until contact has been made. Our backstop is about 15 feet behind the plate.
3. CR can not get anything more then a single.
4. In our younger league the rule is not used. In our middle league the rule is rarely used. In our oldest league the rule is used on a regular basis. Our oldest league has players as old as 86. The rule is for injured players or for those that have some sort of physical problem that doesn’t allow them to rum for themselves. It is not used just because someone is slow.

Discussion: 50 AAA

I am not disagreeing with most of what you stated. What I am saying is that it would be more cut and dry for everyone, including SSUSA, if everyone knew in advance what was going to happen. I know that there are some teams that will ‘play down’ to intentionally stay in same ratings group. It makes no sense to me to do that and waste money going to tournaments with the intention of not trying to win their bracket. However, it is also unfair to go to a tournament and finish behind other teams that do not get bumped up when your team is forced to do just that when you finish below them. I have requested an explanation multiple times and have never been given one. We have only been told that our team deserved the bump and the others did not. How is that even begin to be fair?

Discussion: 50 AAA

In my opinion there is far too much gray area currently. It drastically affected our team in 2013. We finished 5th in a 22 team bracket and were bumped from AAA to Major. Two of the teams that finished ahead of us remained AAA.

I feel that SSUSA should designate all major tournaments as ones that could affect your rating. They should determine by entrants in that group how many will move up or down. For example a group of 6 or less the winner will move up and the last place finisher will move down. In a group of 7 - 16, two will move up and two will move down. This takes all the guess work out of it.

For example, the major tournaments that would affect rating changes would be:

Winter Nationals
Spring Worlds
Southwest Championships
Reno
Western Nationals
Eastern Nationals
Las Vegas Worlds

You can add or subtract from the list.

Dave - I know nothing is for sure but what is your educated guess as to where the 60aaa and also the 65aaa are going to play. Thanks!

Discussion: Age question

In SSUSA your softball age is whatever your age is this calendar year. Your local league might be different. Example: if you turn 65 on September 9 of this year your softball age today is 65.

Mikel - Click on tournaments at top of page. Then click on rules. Scroll down towards the bottom of that page and click on “Team Rating Index”. That chart should answer your questions.

Discussion: Batting screens

Our league bought a Pitch Safe 4 years ago and use it in our Masters Division , ages 68 - 86. I bought one for our tournament team 3 years ago. It weighs about 20 lbs and sets up in less then a minute. Very durable. Folds up and stores in a metal box about 6” X 6” X 24”. Can’t remember where we bought them but we paid about $175. Well worth the expense.

Discussion: You make the call

I agree with Dave and Benj4. COMMON SENSE! I hate the umpire that is out there looking for something to call. The umpire who never moves out from behind the plate to make the call at 2nd or 3rd on a base hit but is right there to call the runner out at home for running through 3 inches of the box when the play was at 2nd. Instead of him making an effort to get out into the middle of the diamond so that he can make a better call, he’s still standing behind the plate calling a runner out who had nothing to do with the play. I have been UIC in the past and have told umpires not to worry so much about what is happening behind them when it has nothing to do with the play. As Dave said, IGNORE IT! If the play is at home then the umpire should attempt to get in the best possible position to make that call. Of course, for many umpires this is easy as they never moved out from behind the plate to begin with.

Discussion: 50 major schedule in vegas

Jevanse33 - I don’t understand the problem. You are going to play on Thursday and if you play well you will play on Sunday. I’m pretty sure you are going to fly in on Wednesday (or sooner) and as has been stated many, many times you might play late Sunday afternoon. What else do you want SSUSA to do. They can’t anticipate when your team is going to be done. I assume you are planning on being in the championship game so plan accordingly.

SKings24 - Your team must be in great shape! Last year in the 50 majors there were 49 teams playing in 3 days. This year, if my count is correct there are 51. If your team should lose their first bracket game you could play somewhere around a total of 15 games. Last year you would have had to play those in 3 days. This year you get 4 days. The only way you play a lot fewer games is to not lose. Good luck! Hit the gym!

Softballer - This thread was about parks near Bartolomew in Elk Grove. It was not about parks near Sac Softball Complex in Sacramento. There is one spot available at Stillman RV park off 99 at 47th Ave for anyone playing in Elk Grove.

We maybe found a park about 10 minutes from fields. I am going to contact them tomorrow. If it works out I will post info.

Discussion: RV Overnight

SSUSA Staff - If you know of rv parks in or near Elk Grove you are a better googler then me. We play a lot of tournaments in that area and we have found the closest one to be at Cal Expo. There might be parks south but nothing very close. Cal Expo is about a 25 minute drive to Bartholomew. Actually, the Sacramento area in general is lacking in RV parks.
