Jan. 20 Arniek Men's 65 1 posts | Batter hits a ball over the fence( Home Run) what base must he touch? The orange base or the white one. The Rule book only states 1st base. Someone told me there was thought there is new rules "hit and sit" batter could go straight to dugout and the base runners automatically score and they do not have to touch the next base. |

Jan. 20 E6 in AZ Men's 50 91 posts | No need to hit first base, I understand that. But .... do you want to be "that guy" that just hit a ball to the top rail of the fence for a single ? Not I. |
Jan. 21 B.J. 1126 posts | if the B/R does run to 1st base he can touch either bag, and if the ball does not make it out of the park he can just continue on to 2nd base |
Jan. 21 OZ40 550 posts | It might depend on the association. I hit one out last year at the Winter Nationals, I touched first, our runner on first base took a couple of steps and saw it was over the fence so he went right to the dugout, he was called out on appeal for not advancing and touching second. I don't know if I was out also because he was the third out. |
Jan. 21 stick8 1997 posts | Here's the rule for SSUSA: "the home run batter need only touch first base and then return to dugout; all other runners need only touch the next base then return to dugout. EFFECT: Batter or base runner shall be called out for failure to touch the next base." Umpire(s) need to watch the batter and any baserunners to make sure they touch first and the next base, respectively. If the batter or any baserunners go back to the dugout before touching it's automatically supposed to be called an out. The home run still counts toward the team total. |
Jan. 21 SSUSA Staff 3607 posts | Stick8 - The rule you quoted is from the last "printed" full Rulebook (2013-14), but does not reflect the change to "hit and sit" made at the 2013 annual Rules Committee meetings in Concord, NC ... That change, which was effective immediately, was part of the "Amendments" document released a little over a year ago, and which is available as a download from the RULES page of this web site ... Here's the current language from Section 8.4 of the Official Rulebook ... __________ NOTE: For §8.4(2) through §8.4(5), the home run batter may return directly to the dugout and all other runners may return directly to the dugout. EFFECT: The concept known as “hit and sit” is permitted in SSUSA sanctioned events. |
Jan. 21 stick8 1997 posts | Excellent, thanks for the correction!! Hit and sit is a much better option. Whoever runs this website should put in the updated version because I copied and pasted the rule from the on-line rules on this cite. Thank you again for the correction |
Jan. 21 SSUSA Staff 3607 posts | It's already here on the web site stick8 ... From TOURNAMENTS - RULES page, it's the second line after the Rulebook cover page graphic ... The link is: Download the 2014 Official Rulebook Addendum ... |
Jan. 26 Webbie25 Men's 70 2417 posts | Let's see, when I started the game you had to run out all home runs, then they went to just touching first, now it is hit and sit. What's next? Walk up, tell them you are going to hit it out and just sit down and save the time? |
Jan. 26 bucs15 25 posts | Webbie25 I remember those days when you ran all home runs out,but you also played and finished a complete game.Hell now your lucky to get 5 innings in.Speed the game up any way possible.JMO! |
Jan. 26 DCPete 409 posts | Hard to understand how a lot of players are still opposed to the 1 - 1 count (without anyone ever giving a solid reason why) when we almost never play 7 innings anymore. |
Jan. 26 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | Mark, no need wasting time walking to the plate, when its your turn at bat, just call it out from the bench. |
Jan. 28 Webbie25 Men's 70 2417 posts | E4/E6, I guess we could even go one step further-at the beginning of the game you tell the umpire which at bats you intend to hit a bomb, and when that at bat comes up, the ump gives it to you, next batter steps in, and goes on with the game. |
