| Dec. 7, 2009 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Better hitter???? Nobody in the game right now has more power right now than Ron Parnell. There may be some that can hit for power with him, but not better. But even more importantly, especially with the home run restrictions last year, he can also hit for average/base hits with anyone. Anyone that played against him saw his dink to right field when the situation called for him to stay in. And he was completely unselfish, giving himself up to do that time and time again. He also is a tremendous leader. He makes the players around him better. Here’s the acid test. If you take all the players that are playing Senior Softball right now, all ages and all divisions, and do a draft, I can’t imagine anyone getting picked ahead of Ron Parnell. If there were a better hitter in the game RIGHT NOW, I’d love to see him. There is not a better all around player. |

| Aug. 9, 2009 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: What's the Ruling? What’s the Ruling? Player “A”, a starter is subbed for by player “B”. Player “B” is then subbed for by player “C”. In the last inning player “A” re-enters (for player “C”) and is playing defensively in the outfield. Now it is my understanding that this can’t be done (a starter can only re-enter for the sub who went in for him). The opposing team brought it to the umpire’s attention after 2 outs had already been recorded. What’s the ruling/penalty? |

| Jan. 2, 2009 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: I don't care what bats are used...... Hey Joey, Mango here. My suggestion is to use the same balls they used at SPA. You needed to hit it to hit a homerun. Anytime guys like Larry Tate (AKA Don Newhard = AKA “Powder”) can hit a ball 300 feet something is wrong J. The game scores at SPA were good (in the 20’s and 30’s) and there were no cheap homeruns. The situation in Vegas was ridiculous. Guys that have no business hitting homeruns were hitting them. I hit a walk off game winner off the hands (that should have been an out) that I still feel embarrassed about. Something should be done about the cheapened homerun and the balls are the easiest way to control it. As far as Major teams moving up being competitive- the 5 or 7 run rule always keeps it close regardless of the home run rule. In Phoenix in the seeding games all our games were close. We didn’t run away from teams until the tournament part where we were allowed unlimited runs. In fact we had to go to extra innings to beat one team in the seeding game and then beat the same team by 30 in three innings with the open inning rule. Wood- “at times, many of us act as though our fifth grade weight would exceed our current IQ... Twins25:This would still make you an 'off the charts' genius”. | Aug. 21, 2008 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: more balls than brains Einstein, Hey Joey. I’ve got to disagree with you. I thought the balls at SPA were fine. You needed to hit them just decent to get them out. You weren’t going to have too many mishit homeruns (we had a couple). The weaker guys weren’t going to hit them out. We scored in the 40’s a couple of times so that’s pretty decent. Now as far as us not scoring many runs against you guys. We only scored 23 because they called the game for the mercy rule (you guys only scored 8 off Mick). They made us stop hitting by rule. We were still hitting with I believe no outs when they called the game. In fact Bully mentioned to me today that we might still be hitting as we speak had they not made us stop hitting by rule. :) Mango |

Curt: You make some good points about the importance of the major plus division being a lighthouse division. And maybe (not totally convinced, need to think about it more) it is better for Senior Softball the way it is now with major plus being an extremely elite division. I was speaking strictly from a selfish standpoint about my desire to play in tournaments with more teams. Smokey: I could easily play and enjoy playing under the rules you suggested. You’re right about the runs per inning keeping the games close. For my taste the more homeruns the better. My suggestion of 7 or 5 (one up/single) was to make it more palatable to the major teams. It’s less of a stretch for them to feel they’re competitive. The one thing I think we can all agree upon is it should never be an out after homeruns are gone! I don’t know what they were thinking when they came up with 12 homers then an out. |
| June 13, 2008 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Description of a Major Plus Player. Gentlemen, Good discussion. So much to weigh in on, where do I start? Let’s see. First of all I must correct Don “Larry Tate” “Powder” Newhard. His legs are not like 2 strings. That would be too generous. More like 2 threads. 2 shiny white fluorescent threads hanging from his shorts. I do however agree with Tate’s idea of merging the major and major plus divisions. I don’t mind if there is a compromise on the homerun rule (7 or even 5) as long as it’s a single after the limit. Why compromise? Because personally I’m tired of the dearth of teams in the 50 major plus division. It’s the middle of June and we’ve only played 2 games against another major plus team this year. We’ve only been allowed to use “our rules” in two games so far this year. Again just my opinion and I’m sure not everyone shares it but I would rather play against more teams. The biggest difference between major and major plus seems to be the number of homers hit. If you restricted the homers you would probably see a change in what an upper division team looked like. The new combined upper division teams(major & major plus) would be reminiscent of the 80’s when USSSA started instituting homerun restrictions (4 or 6 homerun hitters). You would see teams more balanced in terms of offense and defense, again much like the prototypical “A” and “B” teams of the 80’s and 90’s. Mango |
| Dec. 27, 2007 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: when managers picks all-tournment players Gentlemen, For the last 10 years I have primarily played catcher. I don’t think you will ever get an argument from anybody that has ever played this game at a high level that the most important position on the field is the pitcher. You really get an appreciation (catching) for just how much of an impact a good pitcher can have on a game. By the way –IMO a good catcher can help his pitcher and have an impact on the game in a number of ways. Wood - I agree with you. I had the privilege of catching for Ray a couple of years ago. Ray Tarazon is all those things you said about him and more. He is probably one of the most underrated pitchers around, maybe because he’s only been playing softball for a few years. Einstein – Bill from the Mavericks is Billy Gombos. He will be pitching for Evolution this year. I have caught for him before. I agree with you. He is a very god pitcher. And obviously Mickey Hughes is one of the best. I’ve been catching for him for several years now and I’ve seen him completely baffle hitters. I’m glad I only have to hit off him in BP. They only allowed 3 homeruns and then any ball over the fence was an out. So all those balls you claimed to have seen flying over the fence must have been outs. We won the tournament and our leading homerun hitter had 4 homeruns. I didn’t see any juiced bats just some top quality players. As Lecak says some of these players are still at the top of their game. I can understand how you wouldn’t want to go clear across country to get worked like you did in 04 (0-2), but where were you the last couple of years? The 45 was in Mississippi this year and Alabama the previous tournament. Just because you can’t compete doesn’t make it a bad tournament. Also wouldn’t teams rather go to a place like California where there are a variety of extracurricular options/extras to do? Is there really a big difference in airline ticket prices between the east coast and the middle of the country say Colorado? Here’s a tip for east coast guys - check flights into Oakland or Sacramento rather than San Francisco, they are generally cheaper. Hope to see as many teams as possible in Roseville. Mango |

Maybe CRUESADERVB misspoke but it appears his concept is correct. I’m not sure exactly how the snowbird rule works, but my general understanding is that you split your residency over the course of the year. Living part of the year in one location and part of the time in another location. It appears that CRUESADERVB has it right. He spends his summers in Wisconsin (when Phoenix is unbearably hot) and his winters in Phoenix when Wisconsin is unbearably cold. What’s so funny about that? Usually you seem pretty logical on most matters. Sounds like this guy is in a tough situation because his team broke up and he wants to play ball. He’s living in Wisconsin right now and wants to play ball with a team back there. I don’t know how you can begrudge a guy that just wants to play ball. We complain about a lack of teams and then do things that restrict participation? Mango |
| July 27, 2007 Mango | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: REPLANT...... FOOD 4 THOUGHT??? MavericAH makes a good point about protective equipment, though I wouldn’t make it mandatory. I’m seeing more and more pitchers wearing protective batting helmets with cages over the face. Also goalie masks. I know a lot of pitchers wear shin guards under their pants and of course cups. I don’t think it would be unreasonable to wear a chest protector out there. Maybe we will start seeing more of this in Senior Softball. In fact I don’t know why more don’t wear the stuff. I'ld like to hear from some of the pitchers out there that have a gripe with guys hitting the middle. Why don't you wear protection like shin guards mask and chest protector? |

Look forward to seeing you there. Can’t wait to play some guys our own age. Tired of playing the kids every weekend. Our season with Courtesy/Kelly’s is going pretty well this year, with the exception of a second place finish in Tahoe. We ended up getting beat by a pretty nice 40 team out of Washington. Keith (your old manager- Oregon/Northwest Masters) said he would be bringing some of those guys to the 45. As far as Senior Ball goes I'm playing with Kelly’s this year. We've only played once so far and we ended up second in that tourney back in April in Palm Springs. Kelly’s will be playing in September (Vegas I think) and October (Phoenix). Can’t wait. Mango |
